The Christian Doctrine of Immortality (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Dingwall Fordyce Salmond Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Immortality In preparing this new edition, therefore, I have had the advantage of comparing the conclusions to which I had been led with those advocated by others who have written more recently on these important questions. I have also had the benefit of further criticisms by scholars familiar with the subject, among which mention should be made Of the articles contributed by Professor C. Bruston to the Revue de Theologie et des Questions religiouses in May and September of last year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Eternal Purpose by William R. Hart Pdf

Excerpt from Eternal Purpose: A Study of the Scripture Doctrine of Immortality IT is assumed in the following pages that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the divinely-inspired Word of God. Their authority is considered absolute, their decisions final. But if, indeed, it be true that the Bible is God's Word, we should naturally expect to find in it some marks of similarity to other works known to be by the same Author. The Word and the Works of God should be found to possess common characteristics. If we find similar principles governing the origin, development, and relations both of the facts of the material universe and the spiritual facts recorded in the Bible, we have not only a proof of common au thorship, but a most important clue to the study of the meaning of both classes of facts. The Immortality of the Soul and the Final Condition of the Wicked Carefully Considered (Classic Reprint) by Robert W. Landis Pdf

Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul and the Final Condition of the Wicked Carefully Considered It was remarked by the learned editor of the Presbyte rian, (the Rev. Dr. Engles, ) in his notice of my work on the Resurrection, that perhaps it was a defect that the author, in treating the subject, was too anxious to demolish every part of the theory of Professor Bush. This may have been so. But though the judicious suggestion has been constantly in mind during the preparation of the present tractate, the appearance of being too particular in meeting the recent assaults on the doctrine of immortality could not' well be avoided. The theme, in its far-reaching relations, to theology, philosophy, tradition, and Scripture exegesis, is most extensive. The writers to whom I reply, moreover, are very numerous, and taken collectively have, in one way or another, traversed the whole field of argu ment, pressing their assaults with great zeal and earnestness, and their writings are widely disseminated both in this country and Great Britain, and have made a deep impres sion on multitudes of minds. The Immortality of the Soul by Joseph Agar Beet Pdf

Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul: A Protest The following pages are a reprint of articles published in the expositor during the last six months. They are a protest against a doctrine which, during long centuries, has been almost universally accepted as divine truth taught in the Bible, but which seems to me altogether alien to it in both phrase and thought, and derived only from Greek Philosophy. Until recent times, this alien doctrine has been comparatively harmless. But, as I have here shown, it is now producing most serious results. My protest against it is an appeal, which no Protestant can disallow, from the traditional teaching of the Church to the supreme authority of Holy Scripture. Of the justice of this appeal, my readers must judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Christian Hope by William Adams Brown Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian Hope: A Study in the Doctrine of Immortality Man has no deeper or wider interest than theology; none deeper, for however much he may change, he never loses his love of the many questions it covers; and none wider, for under whatever law he may live he never escapes from its spacious shade; nor does he ever find that it speaks to him in vain or uses a voice that fails to reach him. Once the present writer was talking with a friend who has equal fame as a statesman and a man of letters, and he said, "Every day I live, Politics, which are affairs of Man and Time, interest me less, while Theology, which is an affair of God and Eternity, interests me more." As with him, so with many, though the many feel that their interest is in theology and not in dogma. Dogma, they know, is but a series of resolutions framed by a council or parliament, which they do not respect any the more because the parliament was composed of ecclesiastically-minded persons; while the theology which so interests them is a discourse touching God, though the Being so named is the God man conceived as not only related to himself and his world but also as rising ever higher with the notions of the self and the world. The Ancient Egyptian Doctrine of the Immortality of the Soul (Classic Reprint) by Alfred Wiedemann Pdf

Excerpt from The Ancient Egyptian Doctrine of the Immortality of the Soul Even in Pyramid times Osiris had already attained pre-eminence; he maintained this position through out the whole duration of Egyptian national life, and even survived its fall. From the fourth century b.c. He, together with his companion deities, entered into the religious life of the Greeks; and homage was paid to him by imperial Rome. Throughout the length and breadth of the Roman Empire, even to the remotest provinces of the Danube and the Rhine, altars were raised to him, to his wife Isis, and to his son Harpocrates; and wherever his worship spread, it carried with it that doctrine of immor tality which was associated with his name. This Osirian doctrine influenced the systems of Greek philosophers; it made itself felt in the teachings of the Gnostics; we find traces of it in the writings of Christian apologists and the older fathers of the Church, and through their agency it has affected the thoughts and opinions of our own time. Faith and Immortality by E. Griffith-Jones Pdf

Excerpt from Faith and Immortality: A Study of the Christian, Doctrine of the Life to Come Great events in history have always had a profound effect on the development of religious as well as philosophical thought; and there can be no doubt that the present war, which is shaking the fabric of modern civilisation to its foundations, will issue in many as yet undreamt-of changes of perspective and emphasis in Theology. It is too soon to forecast the issue in many directions; but already many pressing problems are demanding fresh treatment. Among these none is more urgent than the question of human destiny in the world to come. Among the reasons for the decay of the influence of the Christian pulpit during the past generation, one is undoubtedly the fact that the doctrine of immortality has so largely lost its place at the heart of the Christian message. Preachers nowadays do not concern themselves so much with what happens after death as with what happens to us here and now. The pains of Hell, the bliss of Heaven, the penalties and rewards which await us in the Unseen, have largely disappeared from amongst the incentives and warnings of the religious life, nor have any other taken their place. The Doctrine of Immortality, as Taught in the Old Testament by George Sexton Pdf

Excerpt from The Doctrine of Immortality, as Taught in the Old Testament: A Discourse Delivered in the Cavendish Rooms, London, England, on Sunday Evening, July 11, 1875 Whether the doctrine of a future life 1s taught In the Old Testament Is a question upon which much has been written at different times, and to the discussion of which some Of the greatest minds have bent their powers. The conclusions arrived at are somewhat diverse, according-to the light in which the subject has been viewed, and the tone of the mind which has been brought to bear upon it. Amongst the opinions that have been entertained with regard to this matter, I may name three, as follows. The Winning of Immortality (Classic Reprint) by Frederic Palmer Pdf

Frederic Palmer's work The Winning of Immortality is a religious look at the concept of afterlife. Republished here by Forgotten books, the author, a biblical scholar, presents an argument for the existence of life after death. Tracing the concept of an afterlife from early Hebrew history to Christian development to modern times, this is a book for both believers as well as non-believers that are interested in hearing an argument contrary to their beliefs. The book leans heavily on the text of The Bible for evidence, however the author does make note of the limitations of this approach. "In endeavouring then to learn of the condition of men after death," Palmer states, "We cannot appeal to 'what the Bible says' as if it were an utterance one and definite." Thus, the book begins by tracing the development of the concept of an afterlife through both the Old Testament and the New Testament, highlighting the changes in this doctrine over time. Later chapters abandon the examination of The Bible in order to make philosophical arguments for the existence of an afterlife. The author also examines the concept of immortality in other religions and in different periods in history, highlighting the beliefs of groups such as the Muslims and the Vikings. The book concludes with a discussion of the exclusive nature of immortality, and asks the question "Is there an afterlife for non-believers?" A reader's enjoyment of this book may depend on where they fall on the issue of an afterlife and their religious beliefs. This book was written by a Christian and seems to be aimed at a primarily Christian audience. Little of the evidence presented within is overly compelling, and it is doubtful that this text would change the mind of any non-believer. However, somebody who believes in an afterlife may find this book to be reaffirming and illuminating, and for these readers The Winning of Immortality is recommended.
