Immunology of Behçet's Disease by Shigeaki Ohno,Manfred Zierhut Pdf

Behçet's Disease (BD) is one of the most-studied systemic disorders characterized by an occlusive vasculopathy of multiple organs. The etiology and pathogenesis of BD are still unclear, but there is evidence for genetic, immunologic and infectious factors in the onset and throughout the course of the disease. Immunology of Behçet's Disease highlights various aspects of BD. After an epidemiological overview, the clinical presentation of ocular and non-ocular symptoms of BD are summarized. The immunopathological changes reflect a chronic vasculitis of arterioles, venules and capillaries. The role of T-cells, but also of NK-T-cells, secreted cytokines and neutrophils is covered. For years microorganisms have been under investigation as initiating BD and, in particular, immune reactions against various microbial heat shock proteins could be an important etiological factor. It has been shown that the pathogenic gene involved in the development of BD is pinpointed to HLA-B51. Finally, the treatment of BD is discussed in detail, including new options like anti-TNF-alpha-antibodies and interferon-alpha. Immunology of Behçet's Disease summarizes our knowledge regarding the most important factors that induce or trigger BD and will stimulate research in the field and help to initiate new ideas.

Behçet's Syndrome by Lorenzo Emmi Pdf

Behçet's syndrome can reasonably be considered a unique entity among diseases of the immune system for several reasons: It has specific features and, uniquely among the immune system pathologies, represents a link between autoimmune diseases, systemic vasculitis, and autoinflammatory diseases. In addition, it is of interest to a variety of specialists, including immunologists, rheumatologists, dermatologists, and ophthalmologists, and requires a complex multidisciplinary approach. Many aspects need to be considered in a syndrome that presents a wide spectrum of symptoms and for which the therapeutic armamentarium is expanding significantly, with the development of new treatments, not least the so-called biologics. This book offers comprehensive coverage of the disease by some of the world’s leading experts in Behçet's syndrome from all the relevant specialties. Epidemiology, genetics, pathogenesis, organ system involvement, differential diagnosis, novel treatments, surgical management, and prognosis are just some of the topics addressed. Behçet's Syndrome: From Pathogenesis to Treatment will be an invaluable reference for a range of practitioners, researchers, and undergraduates or postgraduates interested in immuno-rheumatology, dermatology, and rare diseases.

Behçet's Disease by Shunsei Hirohata Pdf

Behçet's disease is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of unknown etiology involving multiple organs. Along with blindness, other bodily functions are greatly affected by this disease; conditions of the vascular, intestinal and central nervous systems are usually life threatening and require aggressive therapy. Recently, significant progress has been made in several areas of this disease. The introduction of biological agents (such as anti-TNF) have had a positive impact on the effectiveness of treatments. However, there are still a number of unmet needs in various fields of this disease. Despite this, there remains a number of unaddressed issues concerning the treatments of this disease. Several genes have been shown to be associated with this disease, in addition to HLA-B51. Abnormalities in several subsets of T helper cells have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease. Recent advances in the field of innate immunity have shed light on the new aspects of Behçet's disease; that is, this disease has both autoimmunity and autoinflammatory aspects. On the other hand, there are still controversies as to the diagnosis and treatment of recalcitrant manifestations of the disease. This publication highlights the most recent understanding of Behçet's disease and raises several unanswered questions in both basic to clinical treatment of this ailment. The contents of this book are primarily based on the most up-to-date results of research programs sponsored by the Japanese government as well as findings from Korean researchers. In particular, novel classification for neurological involvement (which has been discovered in Japan) led to the establishment of diagnostic criteria and treatment recommendation. Thus, this publication brings forth useful information for a variety of specialists who are involved in the management of this intractable disease.

This book, besides reviewing basic and clinical aspects of Behçet's disease, covers the latest findings, including genetic studies and treatment with biologics for the disease. Although the cause of Behçet's disease is still unknown, it is well known that genetic factors, such as HLA-B51, are involved in its development. Recently, novel susceptibility loci including IL10, IL23R-IL12RB2, and endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1 have been identified, providing new insights into the pathogenesis of the disease. In addition to basic research, the beneficial efficacy of anti-TNF-alpha monoclonal antibodies has also been suggested for not only uveitis associated with the disease but also other subtypes of the disease such as entero-, vasculo-, and neuro- Behçet's disease. Behçet's Disease: From Genetics to Therapies provides essential information both for basic researchers working in the fields of immunology, inflammation, and genetics, and for clinical physicians who are interested in Behçet's disease, such as ophthalmologists, rheumatologists, dermatologists, gastroenterologists, neurologists, and vascular surgeons.

Immunology of Eye Diseases by S. Lightman Pdf

The eye can become involved in immune-mediated diseases that affect it alone or as part of a multi-organ disease process. Much immunological attention has been focused on other organs affected by these processes and the subject of the immunology of eye diseases is a relatively new one. Many of these diseases that involve the eye are not life-threatening but can result in devastat ing loss of sight that if bilateral, will have major effects on the patient's life. Systemic immunological investigations are generally unhelpful in these patients and one of the major problems in this field has been the lack of diseased tissue available for examination to determine the pathological processes involved. Our poor understanding of basic mechanisms of disease in the eye has meant that treatment of many of these conditions is often inadequate. It has become possible to apply in the eye many ofthe techniques used to investigate the role of the immune system in other systems. Animal models of many of the disease processes have also allowed dissection of the immune response both within and outside the eye. It is my belief that a greater understanding of the mechanisms by which the structures in the eye become damaged will allow more specific and effective therapeutic strategies to be devised.

Vasculitis in Clinical Practice by Richard A. Watts,David G. I. Scott,Chetan Mukhtyar Pdf

This book focuses on clinical presentation, diagnostic processes and current management of systematic vasculitis, and for this second edition the Editors have updated the treatment approach and nomenclature in line with current practice. Systemic vasculitides are a group of disorders which are of increasing importance. Many of these conditions are only rarely encountered by general physicians and often present significant diagnostic challenges. The Editors aim to provide easily accessible information in a pocket sized format. In doing so they hope to help both the generalist but also rheumatologists who only encounter these problems occasionally.

Vasculitis by Gene V. Ball,S. Louis Bridges Pdf

This book is a comprehensive review of vasculitis, a fascinating array of life-threatening and minor conditions caused by inflammatory syndromes and diseases that affect the blood vessels. It brings together in a unique way, concepts from both the biology and clinical aspects of vasculitis.Research in clinical immunology now invigorates the entire area of vasculitis, and shapes a rational approach to pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment which is the substance of this text. Over 40 chapters cover known vasculitic conditions, and are illustrated with numerous photographs, diagrams andtables. Some chapters, such as that of aortitis, are brief, and others, such as those devoted to Behcet's disease, are much longer, in keeping with their prevalence. The authors have been chosen based on their unique experiences with vasculitic conditions. Most of these conditions are rare in mostareas of the globe, and it is the exceptional clinician who has much experience with more than a few of these; thus, drawing upon authors from all over the world has enabled the editors to provide informed discussions of all of them. The book is illustrated with numerous colour illustrations ofclinical manifestations and also contains superb illustrations of invasive and non-invasive imaging. This book is directed primarily at general internists, rheumatologist and clinical immunologists, but will also be of interest to dermatologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, neurologists, pathologists and vascular surgeons.
