What seemed like a remote and fruitless yearning for a young lad to raise and fulfil his innate calling became a reality through a set of strange and seemingly fictional circumstances for truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Purely accidental and only the workings of the three fates have caused him to acquire proper schooling, to become a school teacher and headmaster (ag.) of DeHoop Canadian Mission School, his alma materto enter into teachers college to do research work in the Certificate in Education and the Bachelor Of Education in Mona, Jamaica, and later to complete the Bachelor of Arts, in the University of Torontogreat achievements for one who never crossed the door of a High School in Guyana. For he was not only a school teacher in Guyana and Jamaica but went on to retire honorably from the teaching profession in Scarborough, Ontario, 1993. This book reveals that persevering strength of the human spirit to swim ponds, creeks, rivers and marshes; to saunter through valleys and downs; to brave thickets and thorns; to ascend hills and mountains and to reach the apex of the Wills longing. Battle Scarred by Craig Deayton Pdf

"The dead and wounded of the 47th lay everywhere underfoot". With these words Charles Bean, Australia's Official War Historian, described the battlefield of Dernancourt on the morning of the 5th of April, 1918, strewn with the bodies of the Australian dead. It was the final tragic chapter in the story of the 47th Australian Infantry Battalion in the First World War. One of the shortest lived and most battle hardened of the 1st Australian Imperial Force's battalions, the 47th was formed in Egypt in 1916 and disbanded two years later having suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Australian unit. Their story is remarkable for many reasons. Dogged by command and discipline troubles and bled white by the desperate attrition battles of 1916 and 1917, they fought on against a determined and skilful enemy in battles where the fortunes of war seemed stacked against them at every turn. Not only did they have the misfortune to be called into some of the A.I.F.'s most costly campaigns, chance often found them in the worst places within those battles. Though their story is one of almost unrelieved tragedy, it is also story of remarkable courage, endurance and heroism. It is the story of the 1st A.I.F. itself - punished, beaten, sometimes reviled for their indiscipline, they fought on - fewer, leaner and harder - until final victory was won. And at its end, in an extraordinary gesture of mateship, the remnants of the 47th Battalion reunited. Having been scattered to other units after their disbandment, the survivors gathered in Belgium for one last photo together. Only 73 remained.

While Bidding Farewell by Natraj Kranthi Pdf

While bidding farewell…is a compilation of 51 poems. These poems are an abstract reflection of myriad emotions cutting across the domains of philosophy, enlightenment, love, affection, heartbreak, innocence, relationships, responsibility, reality, universality, and celebration of life. They are nothing but a culmination, and a mere randomly scattered display of formless metaphors. More often than not, they are translations of these metaphorical happenings into words, while still attempting to retain the original purity, at the time of their occurrence. This book endeavours to convey indelible silence through words embedded into poems, capture sublime yet subtle happenings, and bring them into material existence.

The Construction of Memory in Interwar France by Daniel J. Sherman Pdf

The contrast between battlefield and home front, soldier and civilian was the basis for memory and collective gratitude. Postwar commemoration, however, also grew directly out of the long and agonized search for the remains of hundreds of thousands of missing soldiers, and the sometimes contentious debates over where to bury them. For this reason, the local monument, with its inscribed list of names and its functional resemblance to tombstones, emerged as the focal point of commemorative practice. Sherman traces every step in the process of monument building as he analyzes commemoration's competing goals--to pay tribute to the dead, to console the bereaved, and to incorporate mourners' individual memories into a larger political discourse."--Pub. description.

Perfect Hostage by Justin Wintle Pdf

Burma is a country where, as one senior UN official puts it, “just to turn your head can mean imprisonment or death.” Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the world’s foremost inspirational revolutionary leaders. Considered to be Burma’s best hope for freedom, she has waged a war of steadfast nonviolent opposition to the country’s vicious militant regime. Because of her resistance to the brutality of the Burmese government, she has been under house arrest since 1989. She has endured failing health, vilification through the Burmese media, and cruel imprisonment in one of the world’s most dreadful and inhumane jails. Suu Kyi has fought every hardship the junta could put her through, yet she has never once wavered from her position, never once advocated violence, and persevered in her message of peaceful resistance at all costs, earning her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, placing her among the likes of such renowned champions of peace as Gandhi, King, and Mandela. She is a truly heroic revolutionary. In Perfect Hostage, the most thorough biography of Suu Kyi to date, Justin Wintle tells both the story of the Burmese people and the story of an ordinary person who became a hero.
