Multifunctionality and Impacts of Organic and Conventional Agriculture by Jan Moudrý,Jaroslav Bernas,Kassio Ferreira Mendes,Rodrigo Nogueira de Sousa,Rafael Da Silva Teixeira Pdf

Organic farming aims to produce a number of crops, without the use of synthetic chemicals (pesticides) or fertilizers, while enhancing soil composition and promoting biodiversity. This is a traditional, more permanent type of farming that relies on ecosystem services to maintain the integrity of the landscape while still producing sufficient yields. In addition, conventional farming uses pesticides and fertilizers to maximize the yield of a particular crop or set of crops, which are typically genetically modified. This book covers several issues related to the multi-functionality and impacts of organic and conventional farming systems. Chapters cover topics related to organic farming and the economy, farm management, and innovative methods and approaches.

The Soils of Iran by Mohammad Hassan Roozitalab,Hamid Siadat,Abbas Farshad Pdf

This unique book addresses Iran’s extremely rich soil diversity and resources, which have developed under various climatic conditions ranging from dry to humid conditions. Featuring contributions by a group of respected experts on Iranian soils and agriculture, it provides comprehensive information on the management approaches needed for sustainable soil utilization and conservation under such conditions, and the attendant challenges. As such, it offers a valuable resource for anyone interested in soils and agriculture in Iran, but also in other Middle East and North African countries with similar climatic conditions. The book contains 14 chapters which illustrate the long history of indigenous knowledge and soil research, climate, geology and geomorphology, vegetation cover, soil forming factors and processes, major soils, properties and their classification. Furthermore, it presents past climate change and paleosols, agroecological zones, soil fertility, soil biology and biotechnology, human induced land degradation and “soil management in space and time”. In the end, major challenges facing the soil resources of the country are defined and recommendations are made to face the future challenges.

Salinisation of Land and Water Resources by Fereidoun Ghassemi,A. J. Jakeman,H. A. Nix Pdf

Human-induced salinisation is a major threat to the world's land and water resources. Inadequate development of irrigation projects, inefficient irrigation, lack of proper drainage, and environmental mismanagement such as the clearing of native vegetation, are responsible for the loss of millions of hectares of agricultural and grazing land, as well as the misuse of scarce water resources. The first part of this book analyses the problem in the context of the world's population, its climate and its land and water resources. It reviews irrigation methods and crop water requirements, the processes of salinisation, and its management. The second part describes irrigated land, dryland and water-resource salinity problems in 11 countries, which contain approximately 70 per cent of the world's irrigated land. In each case study, background data, environmental conditions and past management practices are given to provide an understanding of why salinity occurs in particular places, and of the management methods employed against it.

Water and Crop Growth by A.K. Kolay Pdf

No crop can be grown without being adequately supplied with the requisite amount of water at the proper time. A thorough knowledge of the hydrological cycle, amount and distribution of rainfall, water resources and irrigation projects in India facilitates efficient utilization of water for crop production. Inadequate supply of water to crops in semi-arid and arid regions adversely affects agricultural production. Properties of water, the mode of its entry into the soil and its absorption by roots of crops are important for irrigation. This necessitates accurate determination of the soil moisture content, the plants and available water which is essential for growth and yield of crops. Its deficiency adversely affects their growth and yield. Irrigation must be extended to unirrigated areas in order to increase the production of food, fibre and fodder for which we must know the source of irrigation water, units and methods of measurement of water, methods of irrigating crop fields, factors affecting the choice of irrigation methods, the degree of the suitability of the available water for irrigating crops and the factors affecting the suitability of water for irrigation. As water is a relatively scarce commodity, we must know whether water of a little inferior quality can be utilized to irrigate crops. In addition, we must be familiar with the precautions which need to be taken in this regard. The accumulation of excess water in the soils of the crop fields affects the growth of crops adversely enough to reduce their yields. Choice of the method of land drainage varies with the variation in the topography of the land. It is also necessary to rectify the causes of waterlogging to bring the waterlogged land back under the plough to increase agricultural production. This necessitates drainage investigation and laying out of the proper drainage system. Water requirement of crops depends on the climate and the crop. More water is required to produce crops in the arid region than in the humid region. Crops like paddy and sugar cane require much larger amount of water than finger millet and pearl millet. The book extensively deals with all these aspects related to soil and crop production and suggests measures to enhance productivity through water conservation and proper management of water resources. It will be highly useful for the students, teachers and researchers working in this field. Besides, agriculturists and general readers will also find it useful and informative.

The book has been logically divided into 8 chapters, successively dealing with the technological components in each chapter. Most of the issues that have been discussed for waterlogged inland saline soils have been briefly discussed in the last 8th Chapter, for the coastal regions. Finally the socio-economic aspects which are important to decide the economic viability of rehabilitation projects have been included in the last chapter. Computer programmes have been included, which is the modern approach in dealing with issues of design and development.
