Phenotyping for Plant Breeding by Siva Kumar Panguluri,Are Ashok Kumar Pdf

Plant phenotyping is the thorough assessment of plant traits such as growth, development, adaptation, yield, quality, tolerance, resistance, architecture, and the basic measurement of individual quantitative parameters that form the basis for understanding of traits. Genetic approaches to understand plant growth and development have always benefitted from phenotyping techniques that are simple, rapid and measurable in units. The forward genetics approach is all about understanding the trait inheritance using the phenotypic data and in most cases it is the mutant phenotypes that formed the basis for understanding of gene functions. With rapid advancement of genotyping techniques, high throughput genotyping has become a reality at costs people never imagined to be that low, but the phenotypic methods did not receive same attention. However, without quality phenotyping data the genotyping data cannot be effectively put to use in plant improvement. Therefore efforts are underway to develop high-throughput phenotyping methods in plants to keep pace with revolutionary advancement in genotyping techniques to enhance the efficiency of crop improvement programs. Keeping this in mind, we described in this book the best phenomic tools available for trait improvement in some of the world’s most important crop plants.

WORLD VEGETABLE AND TUBER CROPS by Ratikanta Maiti,Humberto González Rodríguez,Narayan Chandra Sarkar Pdf

Vegetables are rich and cheaper sources of vitamins. They supply good taste and palatability, increase appetite, provide fibres for digestion and prevent constipation. They also play an important role in neutralizing acids produced during digestion of proteinaceous and fatty foods and provides valuable roughages which help in the movement of food in intestine. On the other hand, tuber crops are rich sources of carbohydrates, energy and nutrients. No other books are available which deal with various aspects of crop productivity, physiology and post-harvest technology. In the world, many vegetables and tuber crops are grown and harvested for the supplying nutrients to mankind. This book deals with utilization, production technology, water and nutrient management, weed and pest management, disease management, physiological basis of crop productivity, abiotic stress factors affecting crop productivity and post-harvest technology of several vegetables and tuber crops. It deals with pre- and harvest technologies influencing the productivity of both world vegetables and world crops. The book contains an insight, Solanaceous vegetables, cucurbit vegetables, cole crops, leafy vegetables, root and tuber crops, bulb crops, leguminous crops and several other ones. The book will be highly useful to students and researchers working on various aspects of vegetables and tuber crops.

Genetic Improvement of Tomato by G. Kalloo Pdf

The esculent Lycopersicon esculentum, long thought to be poisonous, has become a major U. S. food crop and source of vitamins and minerals, thanks largely to genetic modification and new production technology Rick (1978) Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ) is one of the most important solana ceous vegetable crops grown worldwide under outdoor and indoor conditions. It has become an important commercial crop so far as the area, production, industrial values and its contribution to human nutrition is concerned. During the past few decades tremendous developments have contributed to the knowledge and understanding of various areas of genetics, breeding and biotechnology and voluminous literature has been generated. The purpose of preparing this monograph is to give a comprehensive up-to-date treatment to the various aspects of genetic improvement of tomato. The emphasis has been placed on cytology, classical and molecular genetics, reproductive biology, germplasm resources, hybrid seed production, use of wild taxa, selection/ breeding methods, breeding for abiotic and biotic stresses, processing and quality breeding, improvement for mechanical harvesting, and biotechnology: tissue culture, protoplast fusion, and genetic transformation. These topics are presented in 22 different chapters. However, a few aspects have been discussed in more than one chapter. For example, seed production is treated in chapters 1, 4 and 8; molecular biology/genetic engineering in chapters 3 and 22 and heterosis in chapters 8 and 16.

On-farm Irrigation Development Project in the Old Lands (OFIDO) by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

The Government of Egypt is committed to enhancing food security and developing the country’s agricultural sector through the sustainable management of its natural resources and the active improvement of its institutional capacities. The national “Poverty Reduction and Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy” well align with this objective by calling for the promotion of a more efficient and market-oriented agriculture and optimal use of land and water resources. The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR), in line with the national Strategy, implemented the On-Farm Irrigation Development in the Old-Lands project (OFIDO), an agribusiness development programme funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Fund (IFAD), with the aim to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor living in selected command areas in Lower, Middle and Upper Egypt. In order to evaluate and define future investment strategies and policies for the implementation of successful interventions in Agricultural Water Management, the Government of Egypt entrusted the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to conduct an independent Technical Assessment and provide a comprehensive overview of the performance of improved irrigation systems in three Governorates in the project area of intervention. The Technical Assessment was carried out in two main complementary phases which allowed a thorough evaluation of both the technical and the economic components of the project.
