Improving Road Safety in Developing Countries by Planning Committee for the Workshop on Traffic Safety in Developing Nations,National Research Council Pdf

TRB, the Policy and Global Affairs Division (PGA), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) have released TRB Special Report 287, Improving Road Safety in Developing Countries: Opportunities for U.S. Cooperation and Engagement. The report summarizes presentations and discussions at a workshop held on January 26-27, 2006, in Washington, D.C. The workshop focused on the sharp increases in road traffic-related deaths and injuries in developing countries with a goal of providing a view of the diversity of U.S. interests, the scope of activities of U.S. agencies addressing this problem, and prospects for further U.S. engagement. The workshop discussions were intended to help the responsible government agencies gauge whether the U.S. response is proportional to the interests at stake and to identify next steps toward a more effective response. PGA and IOM, like TRB, are part of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.

Road Safety by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development,Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Working Group on Safety and Technology Pdf

Every day, it is estimated that about 350 people are killed on the roads of OECD countries, and thousands of others are injured. New technologies, including intelligent speed adaptation and collision avoidance systems, are being developed which could significantly improve road safety levels and reduce these casualties. However, significant investment is also going into technological research which may have a negative impact on road safety, unless action is taken to ensure their compatibility with current road systems. This OECD report evaluates the global impact of new technologies on road safety and provides recommendations to governments and industry to ensure that fatalities and injuries in road traffic are reduced.

System-wide Safety Improvements by Benjamin V. Chatfield,Forrest M. Council Pdf

This synthesis will be of interest to safety engineers, highway planners, and others concerned with the procedures used by states to plan and program safety improvements. Information is presented on current practice of states in using system-wide improvements to provide safety consistency. The primary purpose of system-wide safety improvements is to increase safety by improving roadway consistency - to minimize violations of driver expectancy and to avoid or reduce injury and damage that occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the system-wide and spot approaches to safety improvement, explains strategies and programs for system-wide improvements, and gives general guidelines for a program of improving roadway consistency through system-wide safety improvements.

Traffic Safety by Katherine A. Siggerud Pdf

Traffic crashes kill thousands of Americans every year -- in 2005, it was the the leading cause of death among young Americans. To try to improve highway safety, Congress authorized a grant program overseen by the Nat. Hwy. Traffic Safety Admin. (NHTSA). In 2003, it was recommended that NHTSA improve the consistency of its mgmt. reviews, a key aspect of NHTSA¿s oversight. In response to a legislative mandate, this report assessed: (1) how states have used grant funding to address safety goals; (2) NHTSA¿s progress in improving consistency in its mgmt. reviews; (3) the usefulness of its mgmt. review recommendations; and (4) approaches to further improve safety. Includes recommendations. Charts and tables.
