In A Renegade's Embrace by Cynthia Wright Pdf

*Formerly titled FIREBLOSSOM* Daniel "Fox" Matthews, sent to Little Bighorn by the president to keep an eye on hot-headed General Custer, is haunted by guilt for a battle outcome he couldn't prevent. The raucous gold town of Deadwood, South Dakota seems like the perfect refuge, although it's located in the Black Hills, sacred land to the same Sioux Indians who decimated Custer's troops. Madeleine Avery, raised to be a lady in Philadelphia, is appalled when she arrives in Deadwood with her family. Slowly she unbends, coaxed out of her shell by a powerful attraction to Fox and a journey into the world of the Sioux Indians. IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE is a compelling tale of cultures colliding and the bittersweet, tender journey of Fox and Maddie as they discover the secrets of their own hearts. REVIEWS: "By including historical figures like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok, Custer and Crazy Horse, Cynthia Wright adds depth and color to an absolutely wonderful novel!" ~ ROMANTIC TIMES "Wright weaves history and fiction together skillfully. Maddie is a proper lady who must learn to unbend. Fox is the presidential adviser who's undercover and trying to live with a decision that left him alive while Custer's men died. Like 'Dances With Wolves,' IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE paints the Sioux as an idyllic people faced with the end of life as they know it. Wright creates sympathetic Indian characters and populates Deadwood with an array of real-life eccentrics. IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE again shows why Wright is one of the country's most popular romance novelists." ~ THE SIOUX FALLS ARGUS LEADER Author's note: Maddie's grandmother, Susan Hampshire O'Hara, is the daughter of Lion & Meagan from TOUCH THE SUN. She also appears in HER DANGEROUS VISCOUNT as a young woman.

Renegades by Robert Harkins Pdf

In the wee hours of December 16, 1773, Boston, Massachusetts, citizens, in a feat of magnificent defiance, joined together in a tea party that would breathe into being the American Revolution, a conservative constitution, a sovereign people, and the United States. Today, more than two hundred years later, it's time for a new revolution. In Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response, author Robert Harkins outlines the reasons for a new revolution. It's not the British we must defy but the intellectual elite, whom Harkins calls the renegade liberal—as did George Orwell in his unpublished preface to Animal Farm. The intellectual elite seek to dismantle American civilization and diminish people they believe are so intellectually vacuous and religiously provincial they must, in all things great and small, be carefully monitored and told precisely what and how to think, believe, and live. This cannot be. Americans must discover again their ancient roots, their mythos, creed, and identity. They must commit themselves again to moral and rational excellence. Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response is a tribute to American virtue and serves a starting point for Americans to return to excellence. 'Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response is a historic treasure. Robert Harkins's understanding of history, culture, and America is unsurpassed; and these pages will reveal why past civilizations have gone extinct. More importantly, Harkins's words are a roadmap for each of us to preserve liberty and freedom for our children and grandchildren right here in America, man's last best hope on earth.' Jeff Crank, radio talk show host and Colorado Director of Americans for Prosperity Robert Harkins received his law degree from St. Mary's University in Texas, where he received honors for exceptional scholastic excellence in the disciplines of federal and constitutional law. He taught business and constitutional law as a guest teacher at the University of Texas and served as a Texas judge for seven years, during which time he graduated from the Texas and National Colleges of the Judiciary. He now lives with his wife, Hyosuk, in Colorado.

The Sultan's Renegades by Tobias P. Graf Pdf

The figure of the renegade - a European Christian or Jew who had converted to Islam and was now serving the Ottoman sultan - is omnipresent in all genres produced by those early modern Christian Europeans who wrote about the Ottoman Empire. As few contemporaries failed to remark, converts were disproportionately represented among those who governed, administered, and fought for the sultan. Unsurprisingly, therefore, renegades have attracted considerable attention from historians of Europe as well as students of European literature. Until very recently, however, Ottomanists have been surprisingly silent on the presence of Christian-European converts in the Ottoman military-administrative elite. The Sultan's Renegades inserts these 'foreign' converts into the context of Ottoman elite life to reorient the discussion of these individuals away from the present focus on their exceptionality, towards a qualified appreciation of their place in the Ottoman imperial enterprise and the Empire's relations with its neighbours in Christian Europe. Drawing heavily on Central European sources, this study highlights the deep political, religious, and cultural entanglements between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe beyond the Mediterranean Basin as the 'shared world' par excellence. The existence of such trans-imperial subjects is not only symptomatic of the Empire's ability to attract and integrate people of a great diversity of backgrounds, it also illustrates the extent to which the Ottomans participated in processes of religious polarization usually considered typical of Christian Europe in this period. Nevertheless, Christian Europeans remained ambivalent about those they dismissed as apostates and traitors, frequently relying on them for support in the pursuit of familial and political interests.

The Life of the Skies by Jonathan Rosen Pdf

Aerial delights: A history of America as seen through the eyes of a bird-watcher John James Audubon arrived in America in 1803, when Thomas Jefferson was president, and lived long enough to see his friend Samuel Morse send a telegraphic message from his house in New York City in the 1840s. As a boy, Teddy Roosevelt learned taxidermy from a man who had sailed up the Missouri River with Audubon, and yet as president presided over America's entry into the twentieth century, in which our ability to destroy ourselves and the natural world was no longer metaphorical. Roosevelt, an avid birder, was born a hunter and died a conservationist. Today, forty-six million Americans are bird-watchers. The Life of the Skies is a genre-bending journey into the meaning of a pursuit born out of the tangled history of industrialization and nature longing. Jonathan Rosen set out on a quest not merely to see birds but to fathom their centrality—historical and literary, spiritual and scientific—to a culture torn between the desire both to conquer and to conserve. Rosen argues that bird-watching is nothing less than the real national pastime—indeed it is more than that, because the field of play is the earth itself. We are the players and the spectators, and the outcome—since bird and watcher are intimately connected—is literally a matter of life and death.

The Religions Of Star Trek by Ross Kraemer,William Cassidy,Susan L Schwartz Pdf

Is there a God? What evil lurks beyond the stars? Can science save one's soul? Profound questions like these have consumed human thought over the ages; they also inspired the original creators of the Star Trek canon of TV series and films. Religions of Star Trek tackles these challenging questions head-on in a remarkable look at one of sci-fi's great success stories.Analyzing more than three decades of screen adventure, the authors depict a Star Trek transformed, corresponding to the resurgence of religion in American public discourse. The authors identify the many religious characters in Star Trek, tracing the roots of scientific humanism to more contemporary aspects of religion and spirituality. Through it all, the creators' visionary outlook remains constant: a humanistic faith in free will and the salvific nature of dispassionate scientific inquiry. This book was not prepared, licensed, approved, or endorsed by any entity involved in creating or producing the Star Trek television series or films.
