Don't Sleep, There are Snakes by Daniel Everett Pdf

Although Daniel Everett was a missionary, far from converting the Pirahs, they converted him. He shows the slow, meticulous steps by which he gradually mastered their language and his gradual realisation that its unusual nature closely reflected its speakers' startlingly original perceptions of the world. Everett describes how he began to realise that his discoveries about the Pirah language opened up a new way of understanding how language works in our minds and in our lives, and that this way was utterly at odds with Noam Chomsky's universally accepted linguistic theories. The perils of passionate academic opposition were then swiftly conjoined to those of the Amazon in a debate whose outcome has yet to be won. Everett's views are most recently discussed in Tom Wolfe's bestselling The Kingdom of Speech. Adventure, personal enlightenment and the makings of a scientific revolution proceed together in this vivid, funny and moving book.

Snake Lake by Jeff Greenwald Pdf

In a circular valley beneath the looming peaks of the Himalaya lies Kathmandu, Nepal. It's a city of shimmering prayer flags, sacred cows, lavish festivals, and violent political turbulence—and a world that journalist Jeff Greenwald has come to call home. Snake Lake unfolds during 1990's dramatic "people power" uprising against Nepal's long–entrenched monarchy. The story follows Greenwald as he wins the friendship of a high lama who reveals the pillars of Tibetan Buddhism; embarks on a passionate romance with a spunky but curiously unlucky news photographer; and discovers what democracy means to rural Nepali citizens—all while covering the revolution for a major American newspaper. Meanwhile, back in the U.S., Greenwald's brilliant but troubled younger brother descends into a deepening depression. The author is forced to choose between witnessing Nepal's long–overdue revolution and reconnecting with an alienated brother in desperate need of help. Snake Lake is primarily a memoir (though the roles of several characters have been recast). Focused on the life–changing events that unfolded during one calamitous spring, the book weaves a vivid tapestry of Buddhism, revolution, and the often serpentine paths to personal liberation.

The Presidency of James Buchanan by Elbert B. Smith Pdf

This book offers conclusions that are very different from most of the traditional historical interpretations of the Buchanan presidency. Historians have either condemned Buchanan for weakness and vacillation or portrayed him as a president dedicated to peace who did everything constitutionally possible to avoid war. Under the scrutiny of Elbert B. Smith, Buchanan emerges as a strong figure who made vital contributions not to peace but to the accelerating animosities that produced the war. "Historians who have considered the Civil War a necessary and justifiable price for the destruction of slavery should feel a debt to James Buchanan," Smith writes. "Those who think the war could and should have been avoided owe him nothing." Most of the accounts of the era have concentrated on the Dred Scott Case, Bleeding Kansas and the Lecompton Constitution, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, John Brown, the rise of the Republicans and the disintegration of the Democrats, the election of 1860, and the bitter quarrels over slavery extension occasioned by these events. Buchanan has often appeared on a stage occupied by more important actors. Whether or not the war was already inevitable by March, 1857, cannot be proved. That a subsequent series of emotion-packed events filled both North and South with rage and fear, triggering secession and the war, is undebatable. It is Smith's theory that Buchanan, in leading the United States through these fateful years, added much to the war spirit that developed in both sections. Driven by affection and sympathy for the Southerners, he tried to satisfy their demands for slavery rights in the territories. This aroused bitter anti-South feelings throughout the North, which foiled his efforts and further convinced the Southerners that they could no longer have their way inside the Union. The one event that finally triggered the Southern secession was the election of a Republican president, and Buchanan's agreement with the Southern demands and his personal hatred for Stephen A. Douglas did much to accomplish this. Covering the most controversial period in American history, Smith presents important new evaluations for the consideration of students of both the Civil War and the presidency.

America's Snake by Ted Levin Pdf

The acclaimed naturalist offers an in-depth profile of the timber rattlesnake, from its unique biological adaptations to its role in American history. The ominous rattle of the timber rattlesnake is one of the most famous—and terrifying—sounds in nature. Today, they are found in thirty-one states and many major cities. Yet most Americans have never seen a timber rattler, and only know them from movies or our frightened imaginations. Ted Levin aims to change that with America’s Snake. This portrait of the timber rattler explores its significance in American frontier history, and sheds light on the heroic efforts to protect the species against habitat loss, climate change, and the human tendency to kill what we fear. Taking us from labs where the secrets of the snake’s evolutionary adaptations are being unlocked to far-flung habitats that are protected by dedicated herpetologists, Levin paints a picture of a fascinating creature: peaceable, social, long-lived, and, despite our phobias, not inclined to bite. The timber rattler emerges here as an emblem of America, but also of the struggles involved in protecting the natural world. A wonderful mix of natural history, travel writing, and exemplary journalism, America’s Snake is loaded with remarkable characters—none more so than the snake itself: frightening, fascinating, and unforgettable. Aaron Tiny and the Great Snake Invasion by Cullen Gwin Pdf

"I'm bored," thought Aaron Tiny as he sat behind a wall. He was staring through a tiny nail hole in the wall watching Peter Martin, the big boy in the next room playing video games. "I could do better than he's doing," Aaron sighed. At that moment, Aaron heard the boy's mother calling him. "Peter, are you ready to go to Aunt Martha's with me?" "Ready, or willing?" muttered Peter under his breath. When his mother appeared in the doorway, Peter finally turned off the video game and headed out. A moment later Aaron heard the front door close behind them. He waited several minutes, just to be sure they weren't coming back for something they had forgotten, then he quickly hurried down the hallway that had been built into the walls of the big people’s house. Now was his chance. Aaron had discovered a mouse hole that led into Peter’s bedroom only the week before. It had taken a little exploring, but finally he figured out a way to get down to the mouse hole and back up. He had needed a rope to climb on, but just that week the big family had thrown away an old lamp, and the cord was perfect for the task. Find out what happens when Aaron sneaks into Peter’s room to play a video game and finds himself in the middle of an earthquake! The Tinys are a family of very small people that live inside the walls of a big person’s apartment. In many ways Tinys are like littles, but they don’t have tails like littles do. There are four children in the Tiny family. Gabrielle (or Brie as she is better known) is the oldest. Then comes Aaron, the only boy. After Aaron are the twins, Danielle and Rachelle. They all live with their mother and father. Living nearby are their grandmother and their Aunti Karen, who they spend a lot of time with. The Tinys all live in the walls of an apartment that belongs to the Martin family. In the Martin Family there are the parents, June and Jerry, and their only child, Peter. They also have three cats! As you may know, cats love to chase things that are smaller than they are, and tinys are just the right size for a cat to chase. The cats will pounce on the tinys and bat them around. They may not mean to hurt the tinys, but they do. That’s why tinys don’t like cats. The Tinys work hard at making things work. They like to recycle things that the big people throw away. They also like parties, and good times, and spending time together. In many ways, Tinys are just like you and me, only smaller. Read about the adventures of the Tinies in this series. Ages 7 to 12. Don’t Run Over a Snake’s Tail, Slowly by Dennis Perry Pdf

My name is Dennis Perry. During my first year of Peace Corps service in Benin. I survived a revolution, participated in a land-grab, and ethnic cleansing. In my second year of service, I accepted an invitation to experience life as the old, old Africans lived it. Besides my duties, as an Animal Traction Volunteer, to train and provide health care for thirty-five pairs of bulls I helped the villagers of Kolokonde, Benin obtain a grant of $5000.00 to rebuild their market place. Finally, in 1973, I sat in on a meeting between Benin agricultural officials and the Red Chinese.
