In Poe's Wake by Jonathan Elmer Pdf

"Edgar Allan Poe is one of American culture's most iconic figures, inspiring countless derivations beyond the literary realm, from commercial illustration and kitch to art installations and video games. Why has Poe been so hugely influential in media other than his own? What do filmmakers, composers, and other artists find in Poe that suits their purposes so often and so variously? Poe's works are violent and brooding, memorable both for certain grisly images and for certain prevailing moods-dread, creepiness, mournfulness. They are, in other words, distinctly graphic and richly atmospheric. Jonathan Elmer locates the source of Poe's fascination for artists in these two vernacular aesthetic categories-the graphic and the atmospheric-and how well they describe our experience of the multi-media world. Elmer uses Poe to explore these two terms and track some deep patterns in their use, not through theoretical labor but through close encounters with a wide sampling of aesthetic objects that avail themselves of Poe's work. Poe, we learn, has come to exemplify a modern method of aesthetic production. It is as if he left his box of tools lying around for others to pick up and play with. The bundle of Poe traits-his thematic emphasis on extreme sensation, his flexible sense of form, his experimental and modular method, his iconic personal profile-amount to what could be called a Poe "brand," one as likely to be found in music videos or comics as in novels and stories. Ranging from René Magritte and Claude Debussy to Lou Reed, Roger Corman, and Spongebob Squarepants, Elmer shows how the Poe brand opens trunk lines to aesthetic experiences fundamental to a multi-media world"--

Gender and the Poetics of Reception in Poe's Circle by Eliza Richards Pdf

Poe is frequently portrayed as an isolated idiosyncratic genius who was unwilling or unable to adapt himself to the cultural conditions of his time. Eliza Richards revises this portrayal through an exploration of his collaborations and rivalries with his female contemporaries. Richards demonstrates that he staged his performance of tortured isolation in the salons and ephemeral publications of New York City in conjunction with prominent women poets whose work sought to surpass. She introduces and interprets the work of three important and largely forgotten women poets: Frances Sargent Osgood, Sarah Helen Whitman, and Elizabeth Oakes Smith. Richards re-evaluates the work of these writers, and of nineteenth-century lyric practices more generally, by examining poems in the context of their circulation and reception within nineteenth-century print culture. This book will be of interest to scholars of American print culture as well as specialists of nineteenth-century literature and poetry.

Chordate Origins and Evolution by Noriyuki Satoh Pdf

Chordate Origins and Evolution: The Molecular Evolutionary Road to Vertebrates focuses on echinoderms (starfish, sea urchins, and others), hemichordates (acorn worms, etc.), cephalochordates (lancelets), urochordates or tunicates (ascidians, larvaceans and others), and vertebrates. In general, evolution of these groups is discussed independently, on a larger scale: ambulacrarians (echi+hemi) and chordates (cephlo+uro+vert). Until now, discussion of these topics has been somewhat fragmented, and this work provides a unified presentation of the essential information. In the more than 150 years since Charles Darwin proposed the concept of the origin of species by means of natural selection, which has profoundly affected all fields of biology and medicine, the evolution of animals (metazoans) has been studied, discussed, and debated extensively. Following many decades of classical comparative morphology and embryology, the 1980s marked a turning point in studies of animal evolution, when molecular biological approaches, including molecular phylogeny (MP), molecular evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo), and comparative genomics (CG), began to be employed. There are at least five key events in metazoan evolution, which include the origins of 1) diploblastic animals, such as cnidarians; 2) triploblastic animals or bilaterians; 3) protostomes and deuterostomes; 4) chordates, among deuterostomes; and 5) vertebrates, among chordates. The last two have received special attention in relation to evolution of human beings. During the past two decades, great advances have been made in this field, especially in regard to molecular and developmental mechanisms involved in the evolution of chordates. For example, the interpretation of phylogenetic relationships among deuterostomes has drastically changed. In addition, we have now obtained a large quantity of MP, evo-devo, and CG information on the origin and evolution of chordates. Covers the most significant advances in this field to give readers an understanding of the interesting biological issues involved Provides a unified presentation of essential information regarding each phylum and an integrative understanding of molecular mechanisms involved in the origin and evolution of chordates Discusses the evolutionary scenario of chordates based on two major characteristic features of animals—namely modes of feeding (energy sources) and reproduction—as the two main forces driving animal evolution and benefiting dialogue for future studies of animal evolution

Sleep-Wake Neurobiology and Pharmacology by Hans-Peter Landolt,Derk-Jan Dijk Pdf

This volume connects current ideas and concepts about sleep functions and circadian rhythms with the search for novel target-selective sleep-wake therapeutics. To do so, it provides a timely, state-of-the-art overview of sleep-wake mechanisms in health and disease, ongoing developments in drug discovery, and their prospects for the clinical treatment of sleep-disordered patients. It particularly focuses on the concept that sleep and wakefulness mutually affect each other, and the future therapeutic interventions with either sleep- or wake-promoting agents that are expected to not only improve the quality of sleep but also the waking behavior, cognition, mood and other sleep-associated physiological functions. The chapter 'Sleep Physiology, Circadian Rhythms, Waking Performance and the Development of Sleep-Wake Therapeutics' available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com

Amphibian Alliance for Zero Extinction sites in Chiapas and Oaxaca by Rodolfo Cabrera Hernandez,John F. Lamoreux,Meghan W. McKnight Pdf

The potential for numerous amphibian species to go extinct in Oaxaca and Chiapas is high and worthy of being considered a major environmental problem. This report summarizes the findings of a project aimed at gathering information at 16 sites in southern Mexico which had been identified in 2005 as being essential to the continued existence of 22 highly threatened amphibian species, the hope being that it could help initiate conservation action. Site and species information are presented as a series of profiles.

Ligeia by Edgar Allan Poe Pdf

From time immemorial, men have trembled and withered before the power of the femme fatale. "Ligeia" is a story about a man, whose meeting with a strange, beautiful, and overly intellectual woman in an old city borders on the supernatural and even further into the realms of the unknown. Touching upon subjects like forbidden knowledge and bizarre beauty, Poe’s story serves as an example of what awaits men who are easily led astray and then lost in the labyrinthine vistas of female beauty. Famous movie adaptations include Alfred Hitchcock’s "Vertigo" (1958) and Roger Corman’s "The Tomb of Ligeia" (1964). Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, author, and literary critic. Most famous for his poetry, short stories, and tales of the supernatural, mysterious, and macabre, he is also regarded as the inventor of the detective genre and a contributor to the emergence of science fiction, dark romanticism, and weird fiction. His most famous works include "The Raven" (1945), "The Black Cat" (1943), and "The Gold-Bug" (1843).

A Hundred Poes by The Poet Of Omaezaki Pdf

The Poet of Omaezaki In the winter of 2005 on Omaezaki Beach a seagull flew low and a feather fell from it. The feather floated to my feet. It was winter and I was in winter clothes. Overcoat, shirt, pants and shoes. All black, my artist s uniform. I am inspired by the photo of Albert Einstein on the beach in Santa Barbara California USA in winter. Einstein liked to say that the universe is a sea of waves. Of course electromagnetic and gravitational. I was only wetting the soles of my shoes. Discharging bad energies. After more than 15 years of trying to write a booklet of poetry; I thought the feather is a gift from God... Bonus content www.ahundredpoes.com the password is in the end of the book or ebook.
