The Brisker Rav by Shimon Yosef Meller Pdf

Relates the biography of Rabbi Soloveitchik of Brisk (then in Poland), including the suffering of his community, his family, and other Jews under the Nazis and under the Soviets, whose threat to the souls of Jews, as part of their general militant atheism, was considered more serious than the Nazi threat to Jewish bodies. Ch. 9 (p. 351-391), "Surviving World War II", includes descriptions of efforts to carry on with Jewish religious life under German occupation in 1939. Soloveitchik fled to Warsaw and then to Vilna, under Soviet control. Ch. 10 (p. 392-476), "In Vilna, the 'Jerusalem of Lithuania'", depicts Jewish suffering under the alternating German and Soviet occupations, including a pogrom by Lithuanians. While Soloveitchik succeeded in fleeing from Soviet rule to Eretz Israel, his wife and three of his children remained in Brisk. Ch. 13 (p. 535-576), "The Fate of the Jews of Brisk", recounts the liquidation of the ghetto there, where Soloveitchik's dear ones apparently perished.

Rav Shach on Chumash by Elʻazar Menaḥem Man Shakh,Asher ben Meʼir Tsevi Bergman Pdf

One of the essential ways to study the Torah is to observe the behavior of great Torah sages, drink in their words and emulate their actions. Through this illuminating volume, we are given the opportunity to do just that -- observing episodes in the life of one of the recent Gedolim of our time, Rabbi Elazar Menachem Man Shach, the revered Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevezh. Following the sequence of the weekly Torah readings, this book, compiled by Rabbi Asher Bergman, a grandson of the Rosh Yeshivah, weaves together Rav Shach's insights on the parashah, related anecdotes about his life, stories he told about his mentors, his loving interaction with students and colleagues, as well as eyewitness accounts of his disciples and associates. Rich in wisdom, thought-provoking and uplifting, this is a book you will look forward to reading from week to week -- year after year!

The Yeshiva by Chaim Grade Pdf

The Yeshiva: Masters and Disciples is the second and concluding volume of Chaim Grade's masterwork. Continuing the moving story of Tsemakh Atlas, head of the Yeshiva, Grade re-creates the rich world of his native city Vilna in pre-World War II Lithuania. The now-vanished Eastern European Jewish community was inhabited by the pious and the heretical, the righteous and the sinful, the wise and the foolish. Religion was as crucial to living, and as much a part of Grade's people, as their daily bread. How they reacted to it - and, through it, to one another - formed the core of day-to-day life. Each problem, each experience was felt through the teachings of Tsemakh Atlas. Chaim Grade has brought his striking characters to full life, revealing them in all their glory and pain. The Yeshiva is a brilliant work that mourns, and finally locks into memory, a culture sadly lost in reality but eternal in spirit.

The Rebbe, the Messiah, and the Scandal of Orthodox Indifference by David Berger Pdf

This book is a history, an indictment, a lament, and an appeal, focusing on the messianic trend in Lubavitch hasidism. It records the shattering of one of Judaism's core beliefs and the remarkable equanimity with which the standard-bearers of Orthodoxy have allowed it to happen. This is a development of striking importance for the history of religions, and it is an earthquake in the history of Judaism. David Berger describes the unfolding of this historic phenomenon and proposes a strategy to contain it.

Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism by Dennis Prager,Joseph Telushkin Pdf

If you have ever wondered what being born Jewish should mean to you; if you want to find out more about the nature of Judaism, or explain it to a friend; if you are thinking about how Judaism can connect with the rest of your life -- this is the first book you should own. It poses, and thoughtfully addresses, questions like these: Can one doubt God's existence and still be a good Jew? Why do we need organized religion? Why shouldn't I intermarry? What is the reason for dietary laws? How do I start practicing Judaism? The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism was written for the educated, skeptical, searching Jew, and for the non-Jew who wants to understand the meaning of Judaism. It has become a classic and very widely read introduction to the oldest living religion. Concisely and engagingly, authors Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin present Judaism as the rational, moral alternative for contemporary man.

Toward the Millennium by Peter Schäfer Pdf

This collection of 16 articles represents a selection of the papers delivered in the course of a seminar (1995-1996) at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and its concluding joint symposium held at the Institute and Princeton University. Wide-ranging in scope, the volume covers messianic expectations from biblical times up to modern and contemporaneous adaptations, whereby the focus lies on the messianic concept within Judaism: diversity and variety of messianic expectations in antiquity; messianic movements at the time of the Crusades and around the fifth millennium (1240); the 'Pseudo'-Messiah Sabbatai Avi in the early modern period; the philosophers Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig and Walter Benjamin with respect to their thinking about messianism as well as the Lubavitch movement. Also included are investigations on pagan Graeco-Roman writings and messianic strands in the medieval and baroque Christian context. The section on the modern period contains contributions dealing with the Ahmaddiyya movement in India, messianic currents in the socio-political culture of the Weimar Republic as well as certain messianic aspects in the very recent so-called Branch Davidian community in Waco, Texas. The broad spectrum of stimulating analyses provides a fresh re-evaluation of an apparently timeless phenomenon.
