Your Baby, Your Way by Jennifer Margulis Pdf

Why, despite our state-of-the-art medical technology, does the United States have among the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the industrialized world? Why do pregnant women who are planning to breastfeed receive “free” samples of infant formula from American obstetricians? Why are American newborns given a vaccine at birth against hepatitis B, a sexually transmitted disease? The Business of Baby, an eye-opening work of investigative journalism, exposes how our current cultural practices during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first year of a baby’s life are not based on the best evidence or the most modern science, revealing how American moms and their babies are being undermined by corporate interests. An illuminating combination of meticulous research and in-depth interviews with parents, doctors, midwives, nurses, health care administrators, and scientists, Margulis’s impassioned and eloquent critique is shocking, groundbreaking, and revelatory. The Business of Baby arms parents with the information they need to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their infants.

Ina-Baby by Benjamin Drevlow Pdf

They're too broken not to find each other, he's too broken to make it out alive. Ina-Baby is a collection of linked love stories told in reverse order of mutual abuse. He's pathetically suicidal and she's a bit of a sadomasochist though not one to feel sorry or take shit from anybody, let alone a crybaby like him. What could've ever drawn them together in the first place? Well, it's kinda-sorta like they're star-crossed lovers if they weren't as completely effed in the head as they are, and as effed in the head as they are for each other. She's got her whiskey and sweet red wine and he's got his SURGE!. She's a child of divorce, which is sad, but no real explanation, and he's got a list of childhood trauma that's too long to be believed (and history of histrionics), which he won't stop reliving on the page and in caffeinated temper tantrums. In the end, which is the beginning, he can't let go of the past, and she can't let go of the facts. It's unclear which is healthier everyone concerned--for two of them to stay together, for them to get as far away from each other as they can. But hey, it's a fun ride along the way (said no one who's ever been in an abusive relationship like this).

Birth Matters by Ina May Gaskin Pdf

Renowned for her practice's exemplary results and low intervention rates, Ina May Gaskin has gained international notoriety for promoting natural birth. She is a much-beloved leader of a movement that seeks to stop the hyper-medicalization of birth—which has lead to nearly a third of hospital births in America to be cesarean sections—and renew confidence in a woman's natural ability to birth. Upbeat and informative, Gaskin asserts that the way in which women become mothers is a women's rights issue, and it is perhaps the act that most powerfully exhibits what it is to be instinctually human. Birth Matters is a spirited manifesta showing us how to trust women, value birth, and reconcile modern life with a process as old as our species.

When Boys Become Boys by Chu, Judy Y.,Gilligan, Carol Pdf

"When Judy Y. Chu first encountered the four-year-old boys we meet in this book, they were experiencing a social initiation into boyhood. They were initially astute in picking up on other people's emotions, emotionally present in their relationships, and competent in their navigation of the human social world. However, the boys gradually appeared less perceptive, articulate, and responsive, and became more guarded and subdued in their relationships as they learned to prove that they are boys primarily by showing that they are not girls. Based on a two-year study of boys aged four to six, When Boys Become Boys offers a new way of thinking about boys' development. Chu finds that behaviors typically viewed as "natural" for boys reflect an adaptation to cultures that require boys to be emotionally stoic, competitive, and aggressive if they are to be accepted as "real boys." Yet even as boys begin to reap the social benefits of aligning with norms of masculine behavior, they pay a psychological and relational price for hiding parts of their authentic selves. Through documenting boys' perceptions of the obstacles they face and the pressures they feel to conform, and showing that their compliance with norms of masculine behavior is neither automatic nor inevitable, this accessible and engaging book provides insight into ways in which adults can foster boys' healthy resistance and help them to access a broader range of options for expressing themselves"--

Born Out of Place by Nicole Constable Pdf

Hong Kong is a meeting place for migrant domestic workers, traders, refugees, asylum seekers, tourists, businessmen, and local residents. In Born Out of Place, Nicole Constable looks at the experiences of Indonesian and Filipina women in this Asian world city. Giving voice to the stories of these migrant mothers, their South Asian, African, Chinese, and Western expatriate partners, and their Hong Kong–born babies, Constable raises a serious question: Do we regard migrants as people, or just as temporary workers? This accessible ethnography provides insight into global problems of mobility, family, and citizenship and points to the consequences, creative responses, melodramas, and tragedies of labor and migration policies.

Neurodevelopment and Neurodevelopmental Disorder by Anonim Pdf

Nowadays, neurodevelopmental disorders comprise a large proportion of mental health diagnoses. These disorders, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, include intellectual disabilities, communication disorders, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, specific learning disorders, and motor disorders. Current research is pointing in the direction of schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, and other disorders being included in the category of neurodevelopmental disorders as well. There is a great deal of overlap among these disorders and they are best understood in a dimensional fashion. This book sets out the future of psychiatry in relation to these disorders and what is basically a new understanding of psychiatry in recent decades. Chapters cover topics such as early recognition of schizophrenia, epilepsy, and the genetics of ataxia telangiectasia. Also included is an examination of the complex issue of systems biology and neurodevelopment.

The Radiant Abyss by Angus MacLachlan Pdf

THE STORY: Fuel the feral, dynamic, native smarts of forty-year-old Erin Skidmore, a sexy survivor of an abusive marriage, with the arrival of the shadowy but self-righteous religious men of The Garden of Paradise Cultural Oasis, recently ensconced in the same strip mall, next door to her property management office, and Erin's naturally high octane engine revs into Mach 5. She seduces her former employee and current sex-puppy, twenty-three-year-old nighttime security guard Steve Enloe (never just "Steve") into roping his current girlfriend, Erin, a seemingly innocent, will-o-the-wisp Kinko's girl, into a scheme to investigate and possibly vandalize the "so-called church," an organization that may or may not believe in violence to promote their ends. Nothing is as it seems, and the unfathomable mysteries of God, religion, bigotry, suspicion, love and sexual rapture constellate all three strivers into doing and not doing what they believe is right. Into truth-telling and lying to get what they want. Into revealing and hiding their true fears and feelings. Until a pregnancy, a longstanding betrayal and a cataclysmic act of real terrorism overtake them and change everything for everyone, leaving in the wake no clear path to follow.

Transfontanellar Doppler Imaging in Neonates by A. Couture,C. Veyrac Pdf

This book examines in detail the role of transfontanellar pulsed and color Doppler imaging in the fetus and neonate. After an introductory chapter its use in the normal neonate is considered. Results of the hemodynamic evaluation of 491 newborns aged from 32 weeks of gestation to 9 months by means of pulsed and color Doppler are reported. Normal values of the resistive index as determined by this technique are documented, and systolic, diastolic, and mean velocities in seven different vessels are presented. It is concluded that Doppler ultrasonography enables reliable analysis of arterial and venous velocities. Subsequent chapters examine the use of transfontanellar Doppler imaging in a variety of commonly encountered pathological conditions.
