In the broad field of supramolecular chemistry, the design and hence the use of chemosensors for ion and molecule recognition have developed at an extroardinary rate. The Joint Meeting comprisIng the 3rd International Symposium on Clathrate Compounds and Molecular Inclusion Phenomena and the 2nd International Symposium on Cyclodextrins was held on 23-27 July, 1984, in Tokyo, Japan. It was organized by the Japan Association for Inclusion Chemistry together with the International Organization Committee, with the auspices of sixteen societies and associations in Japan. This event was the first joint meeting with the hope of unifying the above two symposia. The program of the symposium consisted of 142 papers, including 14 invited papers. The invited papers and some selected topics were presented verbally, and all the other 118 papers were displayed in poster sessions. The symposium was held at Hoshi University in Tokyo. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the subjects treated, the scope and subjects were grouped into two parts. In the first group, the chemistry of cyclodextrins, synthetic organic hosts, inorganic and metal complex hosts and layered hosts were treated. In the second group applications in various fields, biomimetic aspects, physicochemical aspects, selectivity, stereo-specificity and other aspects were discussed. The scientific sessions were carried out in a really vivid atmosphere. The number of participants viz 50 from 19 overseas countries and 253 domestic partici pants exceeded our expectation.

In this volume, the authors present theoretical explanations for a few basic problems connected with the propagation of extra wide band, short impulses in linear media, and with the propagation of whistlers and megawhistlers in plasmas. In addition, the book provides an overview of ground and space based measurements, digital processing and signal analysis. The theoretical treatment in this volume is original in the sense that, unlike former solutions, the authors present a fundamentally non-monochromatic approach. A key feature of this approach is the application of the `Laplace Transformation' and the `Method of Inhomogeneous Basic Modes' to solve Maxwell's equations. It is shown that when the obtained theoretical results are applied to digital recordings, the wave analysis process becomes so flexible that it can also be used to investigate other wave propagation problems. These are both terrestrial phenomena (like atmospheric and seismic activity, buried target detection, etc.) and phenomena in space (planetary, interplanetary, plasmaspheric, whistler and megawhistler propagation). The objectives of the ARW were: - identifying areas and highlighting approaches by which large Supramolecular (SM) Assemblies can be synthesised - reviewing and combining methods to characterise and analyse such assemblies. The first part of the ARW is devoted to reviewing synthetic achievements in recent years for several families of SM compounds, and to bringing out principles for crystal structure design, including novel quantum mechanical methods. Synthesis pertains both to the chemical synthesis of components for SM assembly, and to the subsequent assembly process based on complementarity and non-covalent interactions. The elaboration of multiple recognition "algorithms" concurrently employed (for instance, 1t-1t and hydrogen bonds) has recently reached a high degree of sophistication in the sequence: Molecules -7 Supermolecule -7 SM array -7 Crystal or Conglomerate Novel Large Assemblies comprise synthetic entities with molecular weight as high as 15000, and hybrid SM assemblies between synthetic molecules and DNA. Further developments are foreseen at a higher level of organisation, such as between supermolecules or with electromagnetic fields in photochemical processes. Creation of 2D Assemblies is now a powerful tool for creation and study of SM interactions. Moreover, much is to be learned in going from 2D to 3D assemblies in crystal growth and other forms of organisation such as micelles or liquid crystals. On the other hand, crystal engineering based on Molecular Recognition in the Crystal State leads to novel 2D assemblies occurring within predesigned crystal structures (hydrophobic organic clays or nanoporous networks).
