Indian Legends Retold (Classic Reprint) by Elaine Goodale Eastman Pdf

Excerpt from Indian Legends Retold The first Indian legends, repeated by the fireside to children, deal with the animals humanized, their gifts and their weaknesses, in such a way as to be a lesson to the young. Our view of the creation allows a soul to all living creatures, and rocks and trees are reverenced as sharers in the divine. Beyond their simplicity and realism there is always the unexplained, the background of mystery and spirituality. These animal fables serve as an introduction to more complicated stories with human actors, which almost always have their hidden moral and are accepted by our people as guides to life. Tales From Indian History by J. Talboys Wheeler Pdf

Excerpt from Tales From Indian History: Being the Annals of India Retold in Narratives Burma. Consequently he is not only aware of what the rising generation of Hindus are anxious to be taught, but what it is desirable that they should know; whilst he has enjoyed special opportunities of acquiring the necessary knowledge, beyond what is available in libraries or record rooms. In spite, however, of the authority of Sir Walter Scott's Tales of a Grandfather, the present title of Tales from Indian History may be in some respects a misnomer. It possesses, however, the advantage of explaining that the work is meant to be interesting as well as instructive, whilst telling such facts as every Englishman ought to know about India, and which have hitherto been spread over bulky and voluminous publications, and in many instances have not been published at all. They are full of humor and poetry, of pride, tenderness, boastfulness, and real heroism. Human lives are mingled with the supernatural, with elements and mysterious powers, bringing swift punishment for wrong-doing. This is the basis of our Indian philosophy, the groundwork laid early in the mind of the child, for them to develop later in life by his own observation.

They Met at Wounded Knee by Gretchen Cassel Eick Pdf

When Charles Ohiyesa Eastman, a degreed Dakota physician with an East Coast university education, met Elaine Goodale, a teacher and supervisor of education among the Sioux, they were about to witness one of the worst massacres in U.S. history: the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre. As Charles and Elaine witnessed the horror, they formed a bond that would carry them across the United States as they become advocates for Native Americans, whistle-blowing the corruption and racism of the nation’s Native American policies. They used their lives to fight for citizenship and equal rights for indigenous people. Charles built a national organization of and for Native Americans that paralleled the NAACP. He brought Indian ways into the popular scouting movement. They each wrote eleven books, lobbied Congress, made speeches, wrote articles, and protested the steady erosion of indigenous rights and resources. In this double biography, social and political history combine to paint vivid pictures of the time. Gretchen Cassel Eick deftly connects the experiences and responses of Native Americans with those of African Americans and white progressives during the period from the Civil War to World War II. In addition, tensions between the Eastmans mirror the dilemmas of gender, cultural pluralism, and the ethnic differences that Charles and Elaine faced as they worked to make a nation care about Native American impoverishment. The Eastmans’ story is a national story, but it is also intensely personal. It reveals the price American reformers paid for their activism and the cost exacted for American citizenship. This thoughtful book brings a bleak chapter in American history alive and will cause readers to think about the connections between Charles and Elaine’s time and ours.

Taytay's Tales by Elizabeth Willis Dehuff Pdf

Excerpt from Taytay's Tales: Collected and Retold Taytay's Tales were collected for a little girl with an insatiable thirst for "stories." The first ones were gotten by chance from the young Indian boy who has kindly illustrated this collection. Ann enjoyed them so thoroughly that we teased and cajoled other Indians into telling us other folktales, and so the number and our joy in them grew. We think perhaps other little children - and some grown-ups, too - may derive the same pleasure from them, so we should like to share our stories. As mentioned above, the illustrations have been sketched and painted by a seventeen-year-old Hopi boy Fred Kabotie, whose Indian name is Na-kah-woh-ma (It happens again and again like the sunrise), with the exception of a few of the pen-and-ink sketches drawn by Otis Polelonema, another Hopi boy. Neither of these boys has had any training in art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
