The Indian Diaspora in Central Asia and Its Trade, 1550-1900 by Scott Cameron Levi Pdf

Countering the commonly held notion that 17th-century Central Asia was economically isolated after the relative prosperity of the Mongol and Timurid Empires, Levi (Asian history, Eastern Illinois U.) argues that Indian merchants established a diaspora network of commercial communities across urban and rural Central Asia. Not limiting their exchange to the import-export trade, these merchants engaged in a variety of money-lending activities that placed them in a unique socio-economic position that allowed the mainly Hindu merchants to live for extended periods in Muslim countries. Furthermore, these merchants' associations with Indian family firms helped finance transregional trade, rural credit systems, and industrial production throughout Central Asia. Relations between India and Central Asia have been established since ancient times and due to its proximity to India, the region became known as a 'Close Neighbor.' There are many political agreements between India and Central Asian countries and many organizations are working to strengthen these relations. The current government of India is determined to strengthen its relations with the Central Asian countries and the main focus has been on the issue of connectivity, energy, trade and security. The purpose of the book is to throw light on the archaeological remains of Indian civilization found in the Central Asian countries and the present signs of India's language, literature, art and culture.

With Alexander in India and Central Asia by Claudia Antonetti,Paolo Biagi Pdf

Alexander conquered most parts of the Western World, but there is a great deal of controversy over his invasion of India, the least known of his campaigns. In BC 327 Alexander came to India, and tried to cross the Jhelum river for the invasion, but was then confronted by King Porus who ruled an area in what is now the Punjab. According to Indian history he was stopped by Porus at his entry into the country, but most of the world still believes that Alexander won the battle. Fearing the prospect of facing other large armies and exhausted by years of campaigning, Alexander's army mutinied at the Hyphasis River, refusing to march farther east. This river thus marks the easternmost extent of Alexander's conquests. Twelve papers in this volume examine aspects of Alexander’s Indian campaign, the relationship between him and his generals, the potential to use Indian sources, and evidence for the influence of policies of Alexander in neighboring areas such as Iran and Russia.

India and Central Asia by Nasir Raza Khan Pdf

India and Central Asia: Geopolitics, Economy and Culture is a collection of essays on India's relations with the Central Asian states--Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan--from various perspectives. Trade and cultural relations have flourished between the people of India and Central Asia, particularly along the Silk Route, since ancient times. Under colonial rule, many passages from India to Central Asia came into use. However, with the partition of the Indian subcontinent and the consequent hostility between India and Pakistan, and the emergence of Communist China, India's direct link to the Central Asian region was cut off. The present volume makes out a case for the revival of the connectivity between India and the Central Asian states as there is a great potential in this linkage. This collection of essays explores the shared values of Central Asia and India and the common approach of a non-conflict model of international relations. The Central Asian countries and India could collaborate in sharing natural resources like minerals and the transmission of oil and gas, in which Central Asia abounds, leading to a shared security and prosperity, and cultural exchanges.
