Dodge's Geography of Wisconsin by James A. Merrill Pdf

Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Wisconsin: Part I. Wisconsin as a Whole; Part II. The Growth and Development of Cities; Part III. Statistics and Aids to Teachers In a text-book of geography we study the relation of one state or group of states to the whole country of which our home region is a part, and our commercial relations to the world as a whole. It follows that in such a treatment the characteristics that distinguish our own home regions must largely be lost to sight in the consideration of the great features that distinguish the country as a whole. In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, its products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. In this text-book the surface features, the climate, the soil and other natural resources which determine the occupations of the people are studied first because they are the large features which determine the distribution and success of industries. One of the great lessons the student learns in geography is Man's absolute dependence upon Nature for his existence. In this state, as in other regions, topography and climate pointed out the path of development that communities must follow in order to make sure their existence within its borders. In the pages that follow, the student finds traced the fundamental conditions that have moulded the life of the state. After these come the historical events that are landmarks in its growth, and then the study of the industrial and commercial features is taken up. To these, which explain the reasons for the development and growth of the larger cities, and which show us why our own region is important to the country as a whole, careful attention has been given. The Geography and Economic Development of Southeastern Wisconsin (Classic Reprint) by Ray Hughes Whitbeck Pdf

Excerpt from The Geography and Economic Development of Southeastern Wisconsin The five counties' with which this bulletin deals can scarcely be regarded as forming a natural. Or geographic unit. The three counties, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha, owe much of their industrial eminence to two geographical advantages which they possess in common, namely, their frontage on Lake Michi gun and their nearness to Chicago. All five of the counties lie in the Chicago industrial district, and this gives them a de gree Of economic unity. The most influential factor in the industrial development of Wisconsin has been its frontage on Lake Michigan. Along this water front the most important group of cities in the state has grown up. From these cities the chief lines Of transporta tion have been built into the interior, and so the lake ports became the commercial gateways Of the state. During the first quarter century of Wisconsin's statehood, the region for 100 miles inland from the lake was very closely connected in a business way with these lake shore cities. Nearly all Of the main highways and railways led to them; one road (c. N. In the Rock River Valley, led to Chicago, but the others terminated at Wisconsin ports. For many years, wheat, wool, lead, and other products were' hauled by teams scores of miles from the interior to markets on the shore of Lake Michigan; and lumber, shingles, salt, machinery, and general merchandise were hauled back. The Geography of the Fox-Winnebago Valley (Classic Reprint) by Ray Hughes Whitbeck Pdf

Excerpt from The Geography of the Fox-Winnebago Valley Bulletin XXVI of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey is devoted to the geography and industries of the state as a whole. It is the introductory number in a series of educational bulletins which will treat of the industrial geography of the state and of selected regions of the state. The present volume is the first of the regional bulletins. Well defined valleys, if not too large, nearly always have a more or less characteristic industrial life; their various activities are knit together and Show a notable degree of interdependence; hence, a valley like that of the Lower Fox and Lake Winnebago forms a geographical unit, serving ideally as a type study. So different are the geographical and industrial conditions in the basin of the Upper Fox from those in the lower valley that the former is not specifically treated in this bulletin. The same is true of Calumet county on the east side of Lake Winnebago. The bulletin is intended primarily for use in schools, particularly in the schools Of the region with which it deals, yet it is hoped that the general reader may find it of some interest. The writer is indebted to manufacturers, county and city officials, editors, librarians, and others in the valley, whose courtesies he appreciatively acknowledges. In addition to information obtained directly from such sources, county and local histories, newspaper files, and other published material have been consulted. A persist ent effort to secure accurate information has been made, but only one who has attempted such a task can realize how difficult is the attain ment of accuracy in historical matters. It is hoped that any errors which may have crept in are neither numerous nor important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wisconsin Land and Life by Robert Clifford Ostergren,Thomas R. Vale Pdf

Rolling green hills dotted with Holstein cows, red barns, and blue silos. The Great Lakes ports at Superior, Ashland, and Kenosha. A Polish wedding dance or a German biergarten in Milwaukee. The dappled quiet of the Chequamagon forest. A weatherbeaten but tidy town hall at the intersection of two county trunk highways. Ojibwa families gathering wild rice into canoes. The boat ride through the Dells. The upland ridges of the Driftless Area, falling away into hidden valleys. . . . These are images of Wisconsin's land and life, images that evoke a strong sense of place. This book, Wisconsin Land and Life, is an exploration of place, a series of original essays by Wisconsin geographers that offers an introduction to the state's natural environment, the historical processes of its human habitation, and the ways that nature and people interact to create distinct regional landscapes. To read it is to come away with a sweeping view of Wisconsin's geography and history: the glaciers that carved lakes and moraines; the soils and climate that fostered the prairies and great northern pine forests; the early Native Americans who began to shape the landscape and who established forest trails and river portages; the successive waves of Europeans who came to trade in furs, mine for lead and iron, cut the white pines, establish farms, work in the lumber and paper mills, and transform spent wheatfields into pasture for dairy cattle. Readers will learn, too, about the platting and naming of Wisconsin's towns, the establishment of county and township governments, the growth of urban neighborhoods and parishes, the role of rivers, railroads, and religion in shaping the state's growth, and the controversial reforestation of the cutover lands that eventually transformed hardscrabble farms and swamps into a sportsman's paradise. Abundantly illustrated with photos and maps, this book will richly reward anyone who wishes to learn more about the land and life of the place we know as Wisconsin.

Japan in the 21st Century by Pradyumna Karan Pdf

The ancient civilization of Japan, with its Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, is also closely associated with all that is new and modern. Looking outward, Japan sees what it has become since Hiroshima: the world’s second-largest economy, a source of fury and wonder, a power without arms. Looking inward, Japan sees old ways shaken and new ones developing at a hectic pace. Japan in the Twenty-first Century offers compelling insights into the current realities of the country and investigates the crucial political, economic, demographic, and environmental challenges that face the nation. A combination of text, maps, and photographs provides an essential understanding of Japan’s geography, cultural heritage, demography, economic and political development, and of many other important issues. Pradyumna P. Karan explores the obstacles and opportunities that will shape Japan and affect the world community in the coming years. He highlights strategies and policies that will facilitate economic and political change and stimulate the development of effective institutions for long-term, sustainable prosperity and economic vitality. Unique field reports drawn from direct observations of events and places in Japan illuminate Japanese traditions and sensibilities. The first full-length English-language textbook on Japan’s geography, culture, politics, and economy to appear in nearly four decades, Japan in the Twenty-first Century will be a vital resource for researchers, academics, general readers, and students of Japan. Pradyumna P. Karan, professor of geography and Japan studies at the University of Kentucky, is the author or editor of numerous books on Asian geography and culture, including The Japanese City and Japan in the Bluegrass.
