Developing Industrial Water Pollution Control Programs by Wesley Eckenfelder Pdf

FROM THE INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, industrial water pollution control has undergone vast changes. Public Law 92-500 passed in 1972 primarily targeted conventional pollutants such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and suspended solids and as a result wastewater treatment plants were designed to meet these objectives. In recent years volatile organics, priority pollutants, aquatic toxicity and some heavy metals have received attention in specific industrial effluents. In some cases nitrogen and phosphorus will have specific effluent limitations. If the wastewater contains volatile organics such as benzene or toluene, these organics must be removed prior to biological treatment or basins must be covered with off-gas treatment. The technology choice to meet these objectives in a cost-effective manner will be site specific. In 1976 EPA established effluent limitations for priority pollutants in the organic chemicals, plastics and synthetic fibre industries (OCPSF). These are pollutant specific guidelines expressed as an effluent concentration. Depending on the specific chemical involved, the biological treatment process or a source treatment technology may provide the most economical solution. Aquatic toxicity poses a major problem in industrial water pollution control. Because it is frequently non-specific it is difficult to identify appropriate cost effective technologies. As a general rule, biological treatment should be the first option with more costly physical chemical technologies employed only in cases where the toxicity-causing chemicals are non-biodegradable.

Principles of Water Quality Management by W. Eckenfelder Pdf

Recent legislation and more stringent effluent criteria are placing increased emphasis on effective water quality management. The past few years have seen increased emphasis on research and development into both conventional wastewa ter treatment processes as well as new and advanced technology. The purpose of this book is to present a concise summary of present theory, with emphasis on the application of that theory to both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment problems. This book, in large measure, is an updating of the author's previous books, Biological Waste Treatment, published by Pergaman Press, Industrial Water Pollution Control, published by McGraw-Hill, Water Quality Engineering for Practicing Engineers, published by Cahners Books. This book should be useful as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Water Pollution Control, Industrial Waste Treatment, and Water Qual ity Management. The content of this book has been used as a text in Continuing Education Courses sponsored by Manhattan College, Vanderbilt University, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. A series of problems applying the theories as developed in the text are presented where appropriate. For in-depth study of specific topical areas the reader is referred to the cited book references at the end ofthe text.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment by Activated Sludge by Derin Orhon,Fatos Germirli Babuna,Ozlem Karahan Pdf

Industrial pollution is still a major concern and despite its significance, sound and systematic pollution control efforts are very poorly documented. The character and treatability of industrial wastewaters is highly variable and specific for each industrial activity. Biological treatment with activated sludge is the appropriate technology for industrial wastewaters from several major industrial sectors. Industrial Wastewater Treatment by Activated Sludge deals with the activated sludge treatment of industrial wastewaters by considering conceptual frameworks, methodologies and case studies, in a stepwise manner. The issues related to activated sludge treatment, such as biodegradability based characterization, modeling, assessment of stoichiometric and kinetic parameters and design, as well as the issues of industrial pollution control, e.g. in-plant control, effect of pretreatment, etc. are combined in a way to provide a comprehensive and information-rich view to the reader. By doing so, the book supplies an up-to-date reference for industrial wastewater experts and both graduate and undergraduate students. Industrial Wastewater Treatment by Activated Sludge provides a roadmap, describing the methodologies for the treatment of industrial wastewaters from several major sectors, based on a solid theoretical background. Up to now although valuable separate efforts both on activated sludge and industrial wastewater treatment have been presented, an integrated approach that is crucial to practice has not been available. This gap is filled by this book.

Water Pollution Control by Suresh T. Nesaratnam Pdf

Designed to accompany the new Open University course in Environmental Monitoring and Protection, this is one of four new titles which will equip the reader with the tools to undertake Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). Used in planning, decision-making and management, EIAs review both the theoretical principles and environmental considerations of engineering and environmental projects to help steer fundamental legislation in the right direction. This book begins with a discussion of the basics of the hydrological cycle and a description of the natural aquatic environment including the normal composition of surface waters. Further chapters detail the sources of water pollution and the affects of water pollution including biological treatment of sewerage, sludge treatment and disposal, before addressing industrial wastewater treatment and water quality assessment. Air, Gas, and Water Pollution Control Using Industrial and Agricultural Solid Wastes Adsorbents by Tushar Kanti Sen Pdf

Air and water pollution occurs when toxic pollutants of varying kinds (organic, inorganic, radioactive and so on) are directly or indirectly discharged into the environment without adequate treatment to remove these potential pollutants. There are a total of 13 book chapters in three sections contributed by significant number of expert authors around the world, aiming to provide scientific knowledge and up-to-date development of various solid wastes based cost-effective adsorbent materials and its sustainable application in the removal of contaminates/pollutants from air, gas and water. This book is useful for the professions, practicing engineers, scientists, researchers, academics and undergraduate and post-graduate students’ interest on this specific area. Key Features: • Exclusive compilation of information on use of industrial and agricultural waste based adsorbents for air and water pollution abatement. • Explores utilization of industrial solid wastes in adsorptive purification and agricultural and agricultural by-products in separation and purification. • Discusses cost-effective solid wastes based emerging adsorbents. • Alternative adsorbents in the removal of a wide range of contaminants and pollutants from water is proposed. • Includes performance of unit operations in waste effluents treatment.
