Information for Foreigners by Griselda Gambaro Pdf
One of Latin America's most important and prolific writers, Griselda Gambaro has focused on the dynamics of repression, complicity, and violence--specifically, the terror of violent regimes and their devastating effects on the moral framework of society. Information for Foreigners is a drama of disappearance, an experimental work dealing with the theme of random and meaningless punishment in which the audience is led through darkened passageways to a series of nightmarish tableaux. The collection also includes The Walls and Antigona Furiosa.
US Counterterrorism and the Human Rights of Foreigners Abroad by Monika Heupel,Caiden Heaphy,Janina Heaphy Pdf
This book examines why the United States has introduced safeguards that are designed to prevent their counterterrorism policies from causing harm to non-US citizens beyond US territory. It investigates what made US policymakers take steps to "put the gloves back on" through five case studies on the emergence of such safeguards related to the right not to be tortured, the right not to be arbitrarily detained, the right to life (in connection with targeted killing operations), the right to seek asylum (in connection with refugee resettlement), and the right to privacy (in connection with foreign mass surveillance). The book exposes two mechanisms – coercion and strategic learning – which explain why the United States has introduced what the authors refer to as "extraterritorial human rights safeguards", thus demonstrating that the emerging norm that states have human rights obligations towards foreigners beyond their borders constrains policy choices. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of human rights, counterterrorism, US foreign policy, human rights law, and more broadly to political science and international relations.
Japan began to fascinate the West after the account of Marco Polos sojourn in China. This set off an interest in the oriental world. The Portuguese, being the first, arrived in Japan in 1543 which was followed by others. The experience Japan had with Europeans put upon itself isolation for about 200 years. After the forceful opening by Mathew Perry in 1853, many Westerners again began to arrive in Japan. Later during the 1980s, there was an influx of migrant workers which become a hot topic of debate. The book throws much light onto the historical background as well as the events that lead up to the present state of affairs in relation to issues of discrimination, crimes and problems related to foreigners.
Security and Migration in the 21st Century by Elspeth Guild Pdf
The 21st century has brought new and challenging dimensions to our understanding of security and migration. The old Cold War framework of security as related to war and peace, international relations and foreign affairs has given way to a multiplicity of competing notions, including internal security, human security and even social security. At the same time, migration has become a hotly contested issue, characterised by an enormous difference of views and objectives. So what do we mean by security and migration in the contemporary world? How do these two important fields intersect? And what does this collision of policy concerns and public interests mean for states and individuals alike? In this cutting-edge book, Elspeth Guild seeks to answer these pressing questions, drawing on a wide range of recent examples from the impact of asylum seekers on state border security to identity security in citizenship rules to illustrate her arguments. By approaching the topic from the perspective of the individual – citizen of one state, migrant in another – the book examines key aspects of the security-migration nexus, such as the relationship with refugees; torture; extraordinary rendition; privacy and the retention of personal data; and human rights’ protection. The first volume in Polity’s new ‘Dimensions of Security’ series, this book is a must-read for all students of international politics, development studies and related fields.
On Labor & Foreigners in Turkey for Beginners by Sadık Sözer ÇİZMECİ Pdf
For the formation and preparation of this book, my previously published articles, which are available on my personal blog sozercizmeci.com.tr, have been compiled. As a Human Resources Professional, with experience for more than ten years, I have been working and writing in particular with respect to the recent legal developments in the fields of “Labor” and “Foreigners” with a great interest and joy. Throughout my professional career, my entire working life has focused on these relevant two terms. Because of working in a multinational culture, I have always fully believed in the success of the combination of the local and global and achievement of a balanced compromise between these two. Thus, the non-comprehensive list of topics mainly discussed in this book, specifically provides information with respect to the principles and procedures within the framework of the Turkish laws regarding the interaction between “Labor” and “Foreigners”. Nothing in this book shall be deemed as a comprehensive review of the relevant Turkish legislation. This book has been prepared as a portfolio of my works as well as a beginners’ guide for those interested in understanding the basics of the most relevant Turkish principles especially in the fields of Human Resources, Expatriates, Immigration and International Non-Governmental Organizations. This book only contains general information not any professional information or legal advice. Though I have shown ultimate attention during the formation, preparation and control of the information provided in this book as to ensure its accuracy, I shall not be held responsible for any error, omission or inaccuracy herein. The book examines the lives of six different groups of Westerners: ‘foreign comrades’ who made their home in Mao’s China, twenty-two former Korean War POWs who controversially chose China ahead of repatriation, diplomats of Western countries that recognized the People’s Republic, the few foreign correspondents permitted to work in China, ‘foreign experts’, and language students. Each of these groups led distinct lives under Mao, while sharing the experience of a highly politicized society and of official measures to isolate them from everyday China. ‘This book is enjoyable and engaging. The author introduces a small but dynamic collection of enthusiastic international participants in post-1949 China showing unquestioned loyalty to Mao’s ideals. Equally intriguing are the alternate stories of diplomats and reporters existing far outside the mainstream of Chinese life and trusted by neither the Chinese nor the international supporters.’ —Edgar A. Porter, Professor Emeritus, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University; author of The People’s Doctor: George Hatem and China’s Revolution ‘A well-written survey about the variety of Westerners who lived and worked in the People’s Republic of China between 1949 and 1976. This is a welcome addition to the “sojourner” literature about foreigners who lived in twentieth-century socialist countries. The scholarship, which includes the review of memoirs, archival materials, and secondary works, is impressive and comprehensive.’ —Stephen R. MacKinnon, Arizona State University; co-author of China Reporting: An Oral History of American Journalism in the 1930s and 1940s
