Extending the parameters of usual thematic studies, this examination of a literary motif in the Gospel of John explores all passages related to ingesting, including references to food and drink; actions of eating, drinking, feeding and serving; references to words drawn from the domain of ingesting (e.g., "tasting death'); and the six stories that take place during a meal. Consistently, ingesting language is used to describe both the role of Jesus as the one who is incarnate as "flesh" but who must die in order that others might eat and live, and the role of the believer as one who must "eat and drink Jesus" The ingesting motif thus is an important way to talk about salvation in the Gospel. At the same time, the prevalence and effectiveness of this ingesting motif affirms that eating and drinking were significant in the Johannine community, perhaps reflecting Eucharistic practice. This study draws sociological conclusions from literary analysis, and develops a new methodology in biblical literary criticism.

In John 6:51–59, John describes the Eucharist of Jesus by modeling Dionysus. In particular, John 6:53, “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you” is one of the most difficult verses found anywhere in the Bible. To explain this, a new approach is needed when one consistently contemplates why John uses flesh (σάρξ) instead of body (σῶμα), and “This is my flesh”, instead of “This is my body.” The Dionysiac ritual of eating and tearing raw flesh shows cannibalistic elements. Unlike other negative descriptions of cannibalism in ancient literature, Dionysus is described as both an eater and a giver of raw flesh. By reevaluating the negative term of cannibalism, John positively applies this Dionysiac cannibalism to the Eucharistic words in 6:51–59. Because emphatically and slightly ironically, scholars’ arguments show that John 6 is still a “hard teaching” of Jesus, Jesus’ hard saying (6:60) is a consequence of this cannibalistic language and the ambiguous features of Dionysus.

Since Origen and Chrysostom, John's Gospel has been valued as the most spiritual among the New Testament writings. Although Origen recognizes the Stoic character of John's statement that "God is pneuma" (4:24), an examination of the gospel in light of Stoic physics has not yet been carried out. The Stoic study of the Fourth Gospel reveals a coherent narrative tied together by the spirit. The problem with which John's Gospel wrestles is not the identity of Jesus, but the transition from the Son of God to the next generation of divinely begotten children: how did it come about? A reading carried out from a Stoic perspective points to the translation of the risen body of Jesus into spirit as the decisive event. The provision of the spirit is a precondition of the divine generation of believers. Both events are explained by Stoic theory which allows of a transformation of fleshly elements into pneuma and of multiple fatherhood. In fact, in his Commentary on John, Origen described Jesus' ascension as an event of anastoixei sis, which is the Stoic term for the transformation of heavily elements into lighter and pneumatic ones.
