Contemporary Practice in Studio Art Therapy by Christopher Brown,Helen Omand Pdf

Contemporary Practice in Studio Art Therapy discovers where studio practice stands in the profession today and reflects on how changing social, political, and economic contexts have influenced its ethos and development. This is the first UK volume devoted to studio art therapy, and the writers explore what is meant by a studio approach and how they are adapting art-based practices in radical new ways and settings. It comprises three parts – Part I: Frames of reference explores how particular social, cultural, and political contexts have led to the discourses within practice; Part II: Models of practice gives accounts of current studio art therapy practice, describing rationale for working methods and providing a resource for practitioners; Part III: Curating, exhibiting and archiving considers how the display and disposal of artworks, particularly relevant to studio approaches, may be thought about and implemented. The book includes chapters from North American authors who illustrate a trajectory of practice that has the potential to point to future developments. The book will be essential reading for practitioners and students who are interested in taking a fresh perspective on art therapy and will be encouraged by new ways of thinking about the studio approach in today’s changing world.

The separate arts therapies – drama, art, music and dance – are becoming available to increasing numbers of clients as mental health professionals discover their potential to reach and help people. But what are the arts therapies, and what do they offer clients? This fully updated new edition of The Arts Therapies provides, in one volume, a guide to the different disciplines and their current practice and thinking in different parts of the world. Each chapter draws on a variety of perspectives and accounts to develop understandings of the relations between theory, research and practice, offering perspectives on areas such as the client-therapist-art form relationship or on outcomes and efficacy to help articulate and understand what the arts therapies can offer specific client groups. This new edition features ‘Focus on Research’ highlights from music therapy, art therapy, dramatherapy and dance movement therapy, which offer interviews with researchers in China, Africa, South America, Australia, Europe and North America, exploring significant pieces of enquiry undertaken within recent years. This comprehensive overview will be an essential text for students and practitioners of the arts therapies. It is international in scope, fully up-to-date with innovations in the field and will be relevant to new practitioners and those looking to deepen their understanding.

Documenting Displacement by Katarzyna Grabska,Christina R. Clark-Kazak Pdf

Legal precarity, mobility, and the criminalization of migrants complicate the study of forced migration and exile. Traditional methodologies can obscure both the agency of displaced people and hierarchies of power between researchers and research participants. This project critically assesses the ways in which knowledge is co-created and reproduced through narratives in spaces of displacement, advancing a creative, collective, and interdisciplinary approach. Documenting Displacement explores the ethics and methods of research in diverse forced migration contexts and proposes new ways of thinking about and documenting displacement. Each chapter delves into specific ethical and methodological challenges, with particular attention to unequal power relations in the co-creation of knowledge, questions about representation and ownership, and the adaptation of methodological approaches to contexts of mobility. Contributors reflect honestly on what has worked and what has not, providing useful points of discussion for future research by both established and emerging researchers. Innovative in its use of arts-based methods, Documenting Displacement invites researchers to explore new avenues guided not only by the procedural ethics imposed by academic institutions, but also by a relational ethics that more fully considers the position of the researcher and the interests of those who have been displaced.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to understand the ways in which art therapy and mindfulness meditation form a working model specific to the context of political violence and refugees. This is a qualitative phenomenological study based on the social constructivist paradigm. Twelve refugees in Hong Kong from multiple cultures took part in two intensive full two-day art therapy and mindfulness meditation workshops over the space of eight days. In an art therapy studio (later called the Inhabited Studio) participants engaged in art making that stimulated imagination and in mindfulness meditation practice. The research looks at how participants responded to the approach, what their perceptions were and what they found useful. Different aspects of the Inhabited Studio appealed to participants based on their specific worldview, culture, religion, and coping style. Responses to the Inhabited Studio are organized into seven thematic clusters: five of these are organized in two broad categories composed of personal elements (memory, identity) and mediating aspects (emotional/self-regulation, communication, imagination) and the final two, resilience and worldview, span both categories. Participants found the Inhabited Studio culturally compatible and some of the acquired skills helpful in times of stress, indicating the contribution of this combination to enhancing coping and to building resilience. Working Aesthetics by Danielle Child Pdf

Working Aesthetics is about the relationship between art and work under contemporary capitalism. Whilst labour used to be regarded as an unattractive subject for art, the proximity of work to everyday life has subsequently narrowed the gap between work and art. The artist is no longer considered apart from the economic, but is heralded as an example of how to work in neoliberal management textbooks. As work and life become obscured within the contemporary period, this book asks how artistic practice is affected, including those who labour for artists. Through a series of case studies, Working Aesthetics critically examines the moments in which labour and art intersect under capitalism. When did labour disappear from art production, or accounts of art history? Can we consider the dematerialization of art in the 1960s in relation to the deskilling of work? And how has neoliberal management theory adopting the artist as model worker affected artistic practices in the 21st century? With the narrowing of work and art visible in galleries and art discourse today, Working Aesthetics takes a step back to ask why labour has become a valid subject for contemporary art, and explores what this means for aesthetic culture today.

Teaching Creativity by Derek Pigrum Pdf

This study is concerned with creativity in education - especially in arts education (broadly conceived to include the visual arts, music, and creative writing). It takes as its starting point Nietzsche's view that works of art do not appear "as if by magic". Using insights from philosophy, psychoanalysis, and semiotics, the book examines the creative processes of many artists in different media, showing how art works often result from processes of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction that may be long and laborious. Pigrum demonstrates how teachers and their students in all sectors of education may gain from a better, systematic, understanding of such processes.

Ruth Harriet Louise and Hollywood Glamour Photography by Robert Dance,Bruce Robertson Pdf

When Ruth Harriet Louise joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio with "more stars than there are in heaven," she was twenty-two years old and the only woman working as a portrait photographer for the Hollywood studios. In a career that lasted from 1925 until 1930, Louise (born Ruth Goldstein) photographed all the stars, contract players, and many of the hopefuls who passed through the studio's front gates, including Greta Garbo, Lon Chaney, John Gilbert, Joan Crawford, Marion Davies, and Norma Shearer. This book, which coincides with a major traveling retrospective of Louise's work organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, is the first collection of her exquisite photographs. Containing over one hundred breathtaking images--reproduced from the original negatives--it attests to the talent and vision of a surprisingly unknown photographer who formed the images and helped create the popularity of some of our most enduring stars. Louise shot about one hundred thousand negatives that distilled the glamour, drama, and excitement of MGM's feature productions. Louise's original photographs were circulated to millions of moviegoers, magazine and newspaper readers, and fans. The movies and publicity machine that these photographs supported shaped the basic notions of stardom, glamour, and fashion in the 1920s and still affect our ideas today. Robert Dance and Bruce Robertson re-create the entire process--from the moment a performer sat in front of Louise's camera to the point at which a fan pasted a star's picture into a scrapbook. They provide insight into Louise's work habits in the studio and describe the personal dynamics between Louise and the actors she photographed. They include a condensed account of the methods of other photographers, a sharp analysis of fan culture in the period, and superb readings of Louise's photographs. With its combination of well-known and rare images, all magnificently reproduced, this book is a fitting tribute to one of the most gifted and underappreciated glamour photographers of Hollywood's golden period. Note: The hardcover edition of this book does have a dust jacket. (Some hardcovers of University of California Press books available in paperback do not.)

Carr, O'Keeffe, Kahlo by Sharyn Rohlfsen Udall Pdf

Carr, a Canadian, O'Keeffe, an American, and Kahlo, a Mexican, were not close during their lives, but Udall (an independent art historian in Santa Fe, New Mexico), in this carefully reasoned and illuminating study, effectively brings many aspects of the artists' works together to demonstrate a kind of zeitgeist they shared as women developing often surprisingly similar, non-traditional themes in the 1920s. Links between their works are developed in the areas of nationalism, identity, gender, nature, and self through discussion of their paintings, psychology, and artistic influences. The Elusive Auteur by Barrett Hodsdon Pdf

The director's authorial role in filmmaking--the extent to which a film reflects his or her individual style and creative vision--has been much debated among film critics and scholars for decades. Drawing on generations of criticism, this study describes how the designation "auteur" has gone from stylistic criterion to product label--in what has always been an essentially collaborative industry. Examining the controversy in regard to Hollywood directors, the author compares directors and would-be auteurs of the classic studio system with those of contemporary Hollywood and its new climate of cultural entrepreneurship.
