English Society by Keith Wrightson Pdf

"A brilliant and persuasive synthesis of the best recent work in all fields of seventeenth century English history."--Christopher Hill "A triumphant success . . . deserves to be widely read."--H. T. Dickinson "Conceived as an intellectual whole and vibrantly alive."--John Kenyon, The Observer English Society, 1580-1680 paints a fascinating picture of society and societal change in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It discusses both the enduring characteristics of society as well as the course of social change. The book emphasizes the wide variation in experience between different social groups and local communities, and the unevenness of the process of transition, to build up an overall interpretation of continuity and change. In this edition, Keith Wrightson provides a new introduction to set the book in its context and to reflect on recent research, together with an updated guide to further reading. Keith Wrightson is a professor of history at Yale University. His many books include Earthly Necessities: Economic Lives in Early Modern Britain.

Fire in the Stone by Nicholas Ruddick Pdf

The genre of prehistoric fiction contains a surprisingly large and diverse group of fictional works by American, British, and French writers from the late nineteenth century to the present that describe prehistoric humans. Nicholas Ruddick explains why prehistoric fiction could not come into being until after the acceptance of Charles Darwin's theories, and argues that many early prehistoric fiction works are still worth reading even though the science upon which they are based is now outdated. Exploring the history and evolution of the genre, Ruddick shows how prehistoric fiction can offer fascinating insights into the possible origins of human nature, sexuality, racial distinctions, language, religion, and art. The book includes discussions of well-known prehistoric fiction by H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, J.-H. Rosny Aîné, Jack London, William Golding, Arthur C. Clarke, and Jean M. Auel and reminds us of some unjustly forgotten landmarks of prehistoric fiction. It also briefly covers such topics as the recent boom in prehistoric romance, notable prehistoric fiction for children and young adults, and the most entertaining movies featuring prehistoric humans. The book includes illustrations that trace the changing popular images of cave men and women over the past 150 years.

Ghosts of the Shephelah, Book 2 by James K. Stewart Pdf

Miryam Meira Magdalene is the second in an exciting new four-part series titled Ghosts of the Shephelah. Miryam will take you inside the life story of Jesus, from a woman’s perspective. It will reveal Gabriel’s nervousness; enlighten how the census saved Mary from a possible stoning; expose the need for faith in our endeavors; suggest another reason for the betrayal; uncover the real reason Pilate had Jesus crucified; describe the monstrous way in which crucifixion drains life from the human soul; and explain how Jesus did, in fact, spend three full nights in the grave and rose on the third day as prophesied. Miryam speaks from her heart as she reflects upon an unfortunate early life, tells of her salvation, and helps you to realize just how much God loves creation. Hearing the biblical information in story form, voiced by a female disciple, brings the eyewitness account to life in a way that will touch your heart. Not only will you journey with Miryam and the disciples, you will learn why Jesus’ body could not be touched after sundown. Miryam’s faithful witness will both shock and surprise you.

The Digest of Justinian, Volume 4 by Alan Watson Pdf

When Justinian became sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire in A.D. 527, he ordered the preparation of three compilations of Roman law that together formed the Corpus Juris Civilis. These works have become known individually as the Code, which collected the legal pronouncements of the Roman emperors, the Institutes, an elementary student's textbook, and the Digest, by far the largest and most highly prized of the three compilations. The Digest was assembled by a team of sixteen academic lawyers commissioned by Justinian in 533 to cull everything of value from earlier Roman law. It was for centuries the focal point of legal education in the West and remains today an unprecedented collection of the commentaries of Roman jurists on the civil law. Commissioned by the Commonwealth Fund in 1978, Alan Watson assembled a team of thirty specialists to produce this magisterial translation, which was first completed and published in 1985 with Theodor Mommsen's Latin text of 1878 on facing pages. This paperback edition presents a corrected English-language text alone, with an introduction by Alan Watson.
