It explains the balanced role of free- and out-of-the-box thinkers, creative mavericks and visionary leaders who lead their people instead of managing them. You will find loads of great examples, thought provoking ideas and the book is full of helpful insights." Rob Kirschbaum CEO, SakuragiConsult & former VP Innovation at DSM "Dr. DeArmitt has written an engaging, thoughtful, and provocative book about innovation. He has drawn on his extensive personal experience at companies both large and small, recent research, and many other innovators' experiences. The result is a framework of how companies actually operate in practice today, how that often hampers instead of helps innovation, and a set of suggestions and practical recommendations useable by individuals up to company directors." Micah Yairi, Co-Founder and CTO, Tactus Technology "I just finished reading this book on a flight back from Asia, and it was so engaging that I couldn't put it down. Chris's insights on the innovation process, and the corporate hurdles to producing new products, was right on the mark. As someone who has spent his career working for both small and large companies in the US, and who has had to work around these obstacles to invent new products, I can attest to the validity of his arguments. I give this book two thumbs up!" Philip Jacoby, Founder Jacoby Polymer Consulting LLC "Chris DeArmitt enjoyably relates his adventures as a true innovator in a substantially automated world. He identifies all those structures and procedures we have installed that prevent progress from happening: it is a call for all of us working in any position in a larger organization to get our targets straight. Reading this book will make you laugh and cry. It invites you to start thinking and may even make you act...if you dare...like Chris." Professor Gerrit Luinstra, University of Hamburg

The Teaching of Design and Innovation by Gabriel J. Costello Pdf

This book is about design and innovation – what it is and how to teach it. The blending of design and innovation is having an increasing impact not only on the world of products and services but on a wide variety of disciplines such as information and communications technology (ICT), business, education and medicine. However, there is a lack of books on teaching the subject despite the significant growth of interest in both academia and the workplace. This book addresses this gap by outlining foundational principles for the teaching of design and innovation and by offering a practical process for implementing the pedagogy in academic institutions and outside academia in the context of continuing professional development (CPD). It describes two undergraduate case-studies that aimed to instill design and innovation competences in students of both engineering and business disciplines. The cases involved student teams working with incubation centre start-ups and multi-national subsidiaries. One of the aims of this book is to provide a resource for continuing professional development (CPD). Consequently, a third practitioner-based case study is presented as an example of research-informed teaching. In addition, the book proposes the concept of Simulation-Action Learning (SAL) as an enhancement of Project-Based Learning (PBL).

Empty Innovation by Olof Hallonsten Pdf

Innovation is generally viewed as something inherently good, a source of progress and prosperity in our society. But innovation can also have negative, unintended, and wasteful effects, if policies are misdirected and organizations pursue innovation to look good and convey a message, rather than to actually achieve improvements of technologies, services, and products. This book makes the case that innovation has become a buzzword, a political cure-all, and increasingly an empty phrase, and that this has become detrimental to innovation itself. Governmental (and supra-governmental) innovation policy is often unrealistically phrased and shaped, and corporate innovation projects are not seldom meaningless acts of window-dressing. The book describes the problems this presents for society, organizations, and individuals, and seeks explanations for why it has come to be this way. Giving way to a more realistic view of what innovation really is, and how it can be accomplished, the book develops a multifaceted sociological and historical argument where several complementary reasons for the prevalence of “empty innovation” are proposed. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and all those with an interest in the failures of current innovation strategies. This is an open access book.

Organizational Change, Innovation and Business Development by Magdalena Popowska,Julita E. Wasilczuk Pdf

This volume presents a collection of different views and perspectives, featuring both theoretical and empirical contributions, to provide deep insight into the role of innovation and of non-technological innovation (NTI) in contemporary business. It illustrates how NTI encourages organizational development as well as competitive advantage. Chapters display a variety of research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, including case studies, best practices, surveys, novel approaches to interpretations, concepts and theories. Together they contribute to a significant extension of the existing knowledge on non-technological innovations and their role in organizations. This volume highlights the effects of marketing and organizational innovation strategies on companies’ innovation and overall performance, while demonstrating that the effects of NTI may vary depending on the phase of the innovation process, and how it differs within small, medium and large enterprises from manufacturing and service industries. It explores the bidirectional relationship between technological innovation (TI) and NTI, and considers the competences needed to implement NTI. The book is written for scholars and academic professionals from a wide variety of disciplines addressing issues of organizational change and innovation, new management techniques and strategies, and the sustainable growth of organizations. It may also be an interesting source of knowledge for graduate and postgraduate students in management.

The Dynamics of Innovation by Klaus Brockhoff,Alok K. Chakrabarti,Jürgen Hauschildt Pdf

Jorg Bensinger, a group head of Audi corporation's R&D depart ment, had been waiting for long to find a chance to advertise his idea of a four-wheel drive for passenger cars to one of the board mem bers. Favorable experiences had been collected in drive tests with the lItis, a jeep-like car developed for use in the German army. The ex periences showed extremely good performance on icy roads and in snow. Bensinger's chance came in February of 1977, when he could talk to Ferdinand Piech, then R&D vice president of Audi and a technology buff. At this time Audi wasn't quite considered as a tech nological leader in the public. Technology based innovations were expected from Mercedes or Porsche by many customers. Piech, Ben singer, and others sensed that introducing the four-wheel drive to passenger cars could initiate a strategic change. Under great secrecy development work and prototype construction were commissioned. One obstacle seemed to be space requirements for the gear-box. Hans Nedvidek, former race-track engineer in the Mercedes team, was assigned to the team, and he developed an ingenious solution to the problem. It took until September of 1977 until other board mem bers were informed, and after some rallying the board found a con sensus in the next month to authorize further development steps for a four-wheel drive car. However, Audi is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Corp. The accord of the much bigger mother had to be secured.

Human Factors of a Global Society by Tadeusz Marek,Waldemar Karwowski,Marek Frankowicz,Jussi Kantola,Pavel Zgaga Pdf

During the last 60 years the discipline of human factors (HF) has evolved alongside progress in engineering, technology, and business. Contemporary HF is clearly shifting towards addressing the human-centered design paradigm for much larger and complex societal systems, the effectiveness of which is affected by recent advances in engineering, science, and education. Human Factors of a Global Society: A System of Systems Perspective explores the future challenges and potential contributions of the human factors discipline in the Conceptual Age of human creativity and social responsibility. Written by a team of experts and pioneers, this book examines the human aspects related to contemporary societal developments in science, engineering, and higher education in the context of unprecedented progress in those areas. It also discusses new paradigms for higher education, including education delivery, and administration from a systems of systems perspective. It then examines the future challenges and potential contributions of the human factors discipline. While there are other books that focus on systems engineering or on a specific area of human factors, this book unifies these different perspectives into a holistic point of view. It gives you an understanding of human factors as it relates to the global enterprise system and its newly emerging characteristics such as quality, system complexity, evolving management system and its role in social and behavioral changes. By exploring the human aspects related to actual societal developments in science, the book opens a new horizon for the HF community.
