Innovations in Abdominal Ultrasound by Norbert Heyder,Eckhart G. Hahn,Barry B. Goldberg Pdf

Since the beginnings of diagnostic ultrasound in the 1950s, each decade has seen significant advances in this technology. Commer cialization of ultrasound occurred during the 1960s with the introduction of many of the clinical uses that are in existence today. The 1970s showed the most dramatic changes with the commercial introduction of gray-scale and real-time ultrasound. In the 1980s many new advances were introduced, including color Doppler, as well as a wide variety of endoluminal approaches, including endorectal, endovaginal and transesophageal. The decade of the 1990s promises even more significant advances with further transducer miniaturization, three-dimensional ultra sound, and the introduction of a variety of ultrasound contrast agents. With such rapid changes occurring, it becomes important to disseminate knowledge in as rapid a fashion as possible, thus it was quite appropriate that a meeting such as this be held to provide an in-depth review of the many new areas of ultrasound imaging that show promise for the future. Emphasis was on the new uses of ultrasound in gastrointestinal diseases. Many of these advances will, of course, also have applications in many other areas of the body. It is hoped that those in attendance will acquire a much broader understanding of where ultrasound is now and where it is headed in the not too distant future.

Sources of Medical Technology by Institute of Medicine,Committee on Technological Innovation in Medicine Pdf

Evidence suggests that medical innovation is becoming increasingly dependent on interdisciplinary research and on the crossing of institutional boundaries. This volume focuses on the conditions governing the supply of new medical technologies and suggest that the boundaries between disciplines, institutions, and the private and public sectors have been redrawn and reshaped. Individual essays explore the nature, organization, and management of interdisciplinary R&D in medicine; the introduction into clinical practice of the laser, endoscopic innovations, cochlear implantation, cardiovascular imaging technologies, and synthetic insulin; the division of innovating labor in biotechnology; the government- industry-university interface; perspectives on industrial R&D management; and the growing intertwining of the public and proprietary in medical technology.

Innovative Concepts in Inflammatory Bowel Disease by J. Emmrich,S. Liebe,E.-F. Stange Pdf

Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases represent an important medical problem, since they have a devastating impact on the quality of life and require longstanding medical care. Many medical disciplines are involved in tackling the immensely complex studies on pathogenesis, clinical expression and treatment possibilities. This book, the proceedings of the Falk Symposium 105 on `Innovative Concepts in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases', held in Rostock, Germany, on April 30 - May 2, 1998, brought together experts from different fields of science to allow a unified view on clinical and basic research. The main themes of the meeting were genetics, animal models, immunology, epithelial cells, endotoxin, diagnostic procedures, malignancy, medical therapies, and surgery. In each section of the book experts present state-of-the-art reviews with the very latest developments in the respective research areas followed by chapters on different aspects of inflammatory bowel diseases. They provide suggestions concerning future research and clinical management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Bioengineering Innovative Solutions for Cancer by Sylvain Ladame,Jason Chang Pdf

Bioengineering Innovative Solutions for Cancer bridges the gap between bioengineering and cancer biology. It focuses on a ‘bottom up’ understanding of the links between molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and health and functions—all within a bioengineering context. Chapters cover the main methods, technologies and devices that could help diagnose cancer sooner (e.g., ultrasensitive imaging and sensing technologies) and helpful treatments (e.g., new, more targeted therapies). The book takes an interdisciplinary approach that is ideal for those who need the latest information on design techniques and devices that help treat cancer using new, more targeted therapies. By covering the many different ways engineers can deliver innovative solutions to tackle cancer, this book is a valuable read for researchers who have an ambition to make an impact on people’s life in either an academic or industrial setting. Connects bioengineering and cancer biology, providing information on sensors, imaging, therapies and in-vitro models Presents the most comprehensive coverage in the field of cancer engineering to date Provides an academic introduction to (molecular) bioengineering for students, regardless of scientific background (math's, physics, chemistry, biology) Highlights the unmet medical needs for bioengineers and the main technological breakthroughs to cancer biologists

Innovations in Neonatal-perinatal Medicine by Oommen P. Mathew,Jatinder Bhatia Pdf

Innovations in technology and new therapies have changed the face of medicine in the last few decades. These include advances in fetal diagnosis (preimplantation genetics, chorionic villous sampling and amniocentesis), drugs that have been developed to treat unique conditions in neonates such as respiratory distress syndrome (surfactant) and pulmonary hypertension (inhaled nitric oxide), as well as technological advances and interventions resulting in diagnostic (ultrasounds and MRI) and therapeutic interventions (intrauterine transfusion to ECMO). Research in fertility treatments has resulted in test tube babies and cloned animals, and that has also fostered technological advances in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The primary purpose of Innovations in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine is to highlight these innovations in technology and therapy that have not only changed the way doctors deliver care to fetus and neonate but also reduced neonatal mortality thereby saving millions of lives in the process. These issues are addressed by the authors who are experts in their respective fields. the book will be valuable not only to healthcare providers but also to educators and policy makers.
