Input-Output Models for Sustainable Industrial Systems by Raymond R. Tan,Kathleen B. Aviso,Michael Angelo B. Promentilla,Krista Danielle S. Yu,Joost R. Santos Pdf

This book addresses the specialized topic of input–output models for sustainable industrial systems. While these models are well-established tools for economic analysis, their underlying mathematical structure is also applicable to the analysis and optimization of a wide range of systems that are characterized by linear interdependencies among their components. This means that input–output models can be used for diverse networks, such as processes within industrial plants, industrial plants in a supply chain, or departmental units within an organization. The models can also be readily extended to interactions between man-made systems and the environment, e.g. flows of natural resources and/or pollutants. Furthermore, model variants with excess degrees of freedom can be formulated to allow optimization and decision-making to be integrated within the framework. This book examines how input–output models can be applied to sustainable industrial systems. Each major variant is discussed separately in a dedicated chapter, and representative case studies and supporting LINGO code are also included.

Handbook of Input-Output Economics in Industrial Ecology by Sangwon Suh Pdf

Industrial Ecology (IE) is an emerging multidisciplinary field. University departments and higher education programs are being formed on the subject following the lead of Yale University, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Leiden University, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California at Berkeley, Institute for Superior Technology in Lisbon, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich, and The University of Tokyo. IE deals with stocks and flows in interconnected networks of industry and the environment, which relies on a basic framework for analysis. Among others, Input-Output Analysis (IOA) is recognized as a key conceptual and analytical framework for IE. A major challenge is that the field of IOA manifests a long history since the 1930s with two Nobel Prize Laureates in the field and requires considerable analytical rigor. This led many instructors and researchers to call for a high-quality publication on the subject which embraces both state-of-the-art theory and principles as well as practical applications.

A Practical Guide to Industrial Ecology by Input-Output Analysis by Shinichiro Nakamura Pdf

This book addresses the growing need for a standard textbook on input-output analysis (IO) within the context of industrial ecology (IE). IE is a discipline dedicated to providing system-wide, quantitative, and science-based solutions for sustainable development challenges, and its global importance has been rapidly increasing. The primary analytical tools of IE are life-cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA). IO has been widely utilized for LCA since the late 1990s and is increasingly being applied to MFA as well. This trend is being driven by the greater availability and application of global IO data, which now includes an ever-expanding number of countries and regions. Despite the presence of excellent textbooks on IO and IE individually, there is a lack of resources that integrate these two fields. This book seeks to fill that gap by focusing on the practical application of IO to IE, specifically in the context of LCA and MFA. By combining these methodologies, readers can gain valuable insights into sustainable development issues and contribute to more effective solutions in the field of IE.

Optimization for Energy Systems and Supply Chains by Viknesh Andiappan,Denny K S Ng,Santanu Bandyopadhyay Pdf

To curb the impacts of rising CO2 emissions, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report states that a net zero target needs to be achieved by the year 2055. Experts argue that this is a critical time to make important and accurate decisions. Thus, it is essential to have the right tools to efficiently plan and deploy future energy systems and supply chains. Mathematical models can provide decision-makers with the tools required to make well-informed decisions relating to development of energy systems and supply chains. This book provides an understanding of the various available energy systems, the basics behind mathematical models, the steps required to develop mathematical models, and examples/case studies where such models are applied. Divided into two parts, one covering basics for beginners and the other featuring contributed chapters offering illustrative examples, this book: Shows how mathematical models are applied to solve problems in energy systems and supply chains Provides fundamentals of the working principles of various energy systems and their technologies Offers basics of how to formulate and best practices for developing mathematical models, topics not covered in other titles Features a wide range of case studies Teaches readers to develop their own mathematical models to make decisions on energy systems This book is aimed at chemical, process, mechanical, and energy engineers.

Auravana Decision System by Auravana Pdf

This publication is the Decision System for a community-type society. A decision system describes the formal structuring of decisions involving a comprehensive information system that resolves into a modification to the state-dynamic of the material environment. A decision system is a collection of information-processing components -- often involving humans and automation (e.g., computing) -- that interact toward a common set of objectives. This decision system is designed to coordinate and control the flow of resources for global accessibility to all goods and services. To navigate in common, humanity must also decide in common. Herein, individuals maintain a relationship to resources that focuses on access rather than possession, maximizing the advantages of sharing, and incentivizing cooperative, rather than competitive, interest. All requirements relevant to human fulfillment and ecological well-being are factored in to the allocation of resources, optimizing quality-of-life for all, while ensuring the persistence of the commons. The standard’s decision processes produce tasks that are acted upon by an intersystem (a.k.a., “interdisciplinary”) team involving the coordinated planning and operation of projects. Through this comprehensive and transparent decisioning process individuals know precisely what needs to be accomplished to sustain and evolve their fulfillment. Herein, through formalized decisioning and cooperation humanity may continuously restructure society toward a higher potential dynamic of life experience for all. The use of a common social approach and data set allows for the resolution of societal level decisions through common protocols and procedural algorithms, openly optimized by contributing users for aligning humanity with its stated values and requirements.

Advances of Footprint Family for Sustainable Energy and Industrial Systems by Jingzheng Ren Pdf

This book presents various methodologies for determining the ecological footprint, carbon footprint, water footprint, nitrogen footprint, and life cycle environment impacts and illustrates these methodologies through various applications. In particular, it systematically and comprehensively introduces the concepts and tools of the ‘footprint family’ and discusses their applications in energy and industrial systems. The book begins by providing an overview of the effects of the economic growth dynamics on ecological footprint and then presents the definitions, concepts, calculation methods, and applications of the various footprints. The unique characteristic of this book is that it demonstrates the applications of various footprints in different systems including economic system, ecological system, beef production system, cropping system, building, food chain, sugarcane bioproducts, and the Belt and Road Initiative. Providing both background theory and practical advice, the book is of interest to energy and environmental researchers, graduate students, and engineers.

Sustainable Operations Management by Andrea Chiarini Pdf

This book presents innovative research on various aspects of sustainability in the field of operations management and illustrates the potential of sustainability thinking and practice to improve operations performance and thereby meet customer needs. Particular attention is devoted to corporate social responsibility and marketing strategy, knowledge management for sustainability, the role of culture in a sustainable built environment, sustainable manufacturing through the application of lean and green concepts, advancing sustainability through ISO standards, and the sustainable supply chain. The present decade is proving to be a time of change in terms of business strategies and operations management. Many of the trends are still subject to uncertainty, but an understanding of the need for, and benefits of, sustainability can give a clear indication of their trajectory. Consumers and markets in general believe that while implementing their business strategies, companies should also try to improve society and the environment and to exercise social responsibility toward their employees. This book provides insights into how this may be achieved, and it is recommended for researchers as well as all practitioners and managers dedicated to enhancing sustainability in operations.
