The interaction between a high-power laser beam and a moving cloud of vaporizing droplets is considered theoretically. A study was performed to assess partially the feasibility of a new concept of generating an ultra-high-total-enthalpy flow. The spectral absorption coefficient of liquid air was determined at the fundamental vibration-rotation frequencies of liquid nitrogen and oxygen. A perturbation solution was sought for a small arbitrary variation in the velocity of the moving droplets. The first-order correction to uniform-velocity solution has been explicitly carried out in closed form. (Modified author abstract).

A theoretical model of the interaction between a hypersonic multicomponent flow and a high-power laser beam is described. The properties of the gaseous wedge (composed of the vapor of liquid-air droplets irradiated by a laser beam) are calculated. Conditions under which a steady-state shock wave will form ahead of the gaseous wedge and serve as an effective mechanism to separate the droplets from the carrier gas are described. The concept of generating a gaseous wedge to separate particles from the carrier gas is discussed. (Modified author abstract).
