Internal Flow by E. M. Greitzer,C. S. Tan,M. B. Graf Pdf

This book describes the analysis and behaviour of internal flows encountered in propulsion systems, fluid machinery (compressors, turbines and pumps) and ducts (diffusers, nozzles and combustion chambers). The focus is on phenomena that are important in setting the performance of a broad range of fluid devices. The authors show that even for complex processes one can learn a great deal about the behaviour of such devices from a clear understanding and rigorous use of basic principles. Throughout the book they illustrate theoretical principles by reference to technological applications. The strong emphasis on fundamentals, however, means that the ideas presented can be applied beyond internal flow to other types of fluid motion. The book equips students and practising engineers with a range of new analytical tools. These tools offer enhanced interpretation and application of both experimental measurements and the computational procedures that characterize modern fluids engineering.

Application of the Hydraulic Analogy to Internal Subsonic Flow by Carl Hugh Warren Pdf

An experimental study was made to determine the quantitative accuracy of the hydraulic analogy when applied to subsonic internal flows such as exist in pure fluid elements. The analogy is based upon the correspondence between density and depth (or pressure and depth squared) when the Mach number and Froude number are equal. Experiments were run in air and in water on geometrically similar nonsymmetrical flow dividers. A factor was used to correct for the difference in apparent specific heat ratios k. (Apparent k = 2 for hydraulic flow, k = 1.4 for air flow.) After this correction was made, the data correlated to within three percent. The Reynolds number for the water flow varied from about 1,500 to 4,000 and, for the air flow, from 17,000 to 100,000. The good correlation, even though some of the water data was taken in apparently laminar flow, indicated that inertial effects predominated over viscous effects. This was because the fluid was essentially at rest before it entered the flow divider. The geometry was characterized by sharp angles and relatively short flow lengths so that convective acceleration and separation zones dominated the flow and established patterns of velocity distribution did not have a chance to completely develop. Some Internal-flow Characteristics at Zero Flight Speed of an Annular Supersonic Inlet and an Open-nose Inlet with Sharp and Rounded Lips by Joseph R. Milillo Pdf

Static tests of an annular conical-shock inlet and an open-nose conical inlet with three lip shapes were conducted at the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel. Measurements of pressure recovery, surface pressure, and total pressure were made through a mass-flow range extending to choking. The results indicate that the two inlets with thin sharp lips had about the same relatively poor pressure-recovery characteristics and choked at a mass-flow rate of about 78 percent of the theoretical maximum. However, both the pressure recovery and choking mass-flow rate were greatly improved by replacing the sharp lip by two alternate shapes with lip roundness and internal contraction just behind the inlet lip.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Transcritical Flows by Hermann L. Jordan,Herbert Oertel,Klaus Robert Pdf

The German Aerospace Research Establishment (DFVLR) has initiated a new series of seminars concerning fundamental problems in applied engineering sciences. These seminars will be devoted to interdisciplinary topics related to the vast variety of DFVLR activities in the fields of fluid mechanics, flight mechanics, guidance and control, materials and struc tures, non-nuclear energetics, communication technology, and remote sensing. The purpose of the series is twofold, namely, to bring modern ideas and techniques to the attention of the DFVLR in order to stimulate internal activi ties, and secondly, to promulgate DFVLR achievements wi thin the international scientific/technical community. To this end, prominent speakers from Germany and other countries will be invited to join in a series of lectures and discussions on certain topics of mutual interest. The first colloquium of this series dealt with the dynamics of nonlinear systems, especially in relation'to its application to fluid mechanics, particularly in transcritical flows. Of special interest are questions concerning the formation of nonlinear three-dimensional structures in classical fluid mechanical stability problems, the physical process of transition to turbulence, and the appearance of chaotic solutions. The scope of lectures reaches from self-organization in physical systems to structural stability of three-dimensional vortex patterns, the treatment of dissipative and conservative systems, the formation of nonlinear structures in the region of laminar-turbulent transition, and numerical simulation of cumulus cloud convection in meteorology. The seminar should provide an insight into the extent to which theoretical findings in Non linear Dynamics apply to the comprehension of fluid-mechanical problems.
