International Trade and Environmental Regulation by Xinpeng Xu Pdf

This book sets out to examine one of the most important issues on trade and the environment namely, the trade effects of domestic environmental policy. The central question addressed is whether stringent domestic environmental policies reduce the international competitiveness of environmentally sensitive industries. This study is distinguished by two major innovations that go beyond the established literature: the examination of time-series evidence to explore the relationship between environmental regulations and trade patterns, and the introduction of technology factors, together with endowment factors, to explain the empirical evidence. To theoretically explore the dynamic linkage between environmental regulation, technological innovation and economic growth the author sets up an intertemporal dynamic general equilibrium model in which the more fundamental, dynamic determinant of economic growth is its capacity for technological innovation. The basic findings are that (1) changes in thestringency of environmental regulations do not have long-run growth effects; and (2) technological innovation is an important determinant of a country's long-run growth. The emphasis of this book is that the trade effects of domestic environmental policy can be better understood if one allows for a dynamic Ricardian technology factor in the conventional Heckscher-Ohlin framework. Innovation and subsequent increases in relative labour productivity, together with factor endowments, are important factors in determining the relationship between environmental regulation and international competitiveness. This result should help refocus the debate on the relationship between environmental regulationand competitiveness in international trade.

Enhancing Global Competitiveness Through Sustainable Environmental Stewardship by Subhash C. Jain,Ben L. Kedia Pdf

It is apparent that environmental issues affect the livelihoods and well being of individuals, communities and businesses the world over. In that vein, this book examines the impact that climate change and other environmental factors have on business. The effect of climate change, while a significant factor, will influence business slowly, but inexorably. Executives should manage environmental risk at three levels: regulatory compliance, potential liability from industrial accidents, and pollutant release mitigation.Companies that are proactive in mitigating their exposure to climate-change risks will not only generate new profitable opportunities, but also gain competitive advantage over their rivals in a carbon-constrained future. Enhancing Global Competitiveness through Sustainable Environmental Stewardship provides frameworks for identifying how climate change might affect a business, and suggests strategy guidelines to manage the risks and seek opportunities. This seminal collection of research will be of particular interest to students and scholars of sustainability studies, business and management, and business professionals concerned with the role they will play in the changing and challenging times that lie ahead for business growth and environmental consciousness.

Trade and the Environment by Savas S. Alpay Pdf

As the demand for environmental quality is increasing and as the current GATT rules monitored by the WTO are not very suitable for environmental protection, either a new international environmental organization may be formed soon or new environmental regulations may be added to GATT. In either case, understanding of the interactions between trade and the environment will be vital. Trade and the Environment presents both the theoretical and empirical exposition of (i) the impact of trade liberalization on environmental quality; (ii) the impact of environmental regulations on international competitiveness; and (iii) strategic trade and environmental policies. An important feature of Trade and the Environment as compared to earlier books is that it brings together the reciprocal interactions between trade and the environment. It can be used as the main or complementary textbook for a course on trade and the environment.

Competitiveness and Environmental Standards by Piritta Sorsa Pdf

Restricting trade to compensate for differences in environmental standards is unlikely to improve competitiveness in environmentally sensistive industries. Higher environmental spending has had no noticeable effect on trade performance, so protection will not solve problems of noncompetitiveness. The reasons for good or poor performance are likely to lie elsewhere.

Report on Global Environmental Competitiveness (2013) by Li Jianping,Li Minrong,Wang Jinnan,Li Jianjian,Su Hongwen,Huang Maoxing Pdf

This book explores the environmental competitiveness of 133 countries around the world, presenting an index evaluation system to facilitate a comparative analysis of environmental competitiveness on a global scale. This is a new way to measure competitiveness in the light of the contradiction between world economic development and environmental protection. Global environmental competitiveness covers five aspects: the ecological environment, resources environment, environmental management, environmental impacts and environmental coordination. The authors use longitudinal study and horizontal analysis, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis methods so as to conduct an in-depth study of theoretical, empirical and methodological issues of global environmental competitiveness. The work is presented here in three main parts beginning with the theory, technical road-map and analytical approach used. The second part reports on the countries as evaluation objects, analyzing the development status of global environmental competitiveness as a whole and revealing the strengths and weaknesses of each country’s environmental competitiveness. Basic paths and strategies to enhance the competitiveness level are presented. In the third part the reader will discover a sub-report and evaluation of the environmental competitiveness for 133 countries around the world, revealing the characteristics and relative differences of countries representing different levels of development, in order to provide an important decision-making reference to those considering environmental economic policies, especially those considering accelerating a green economic transformation and enhancing environmental competitiveness. This book will appeal to scholars and professionals with an interest in environmental issues and environmental competitiveness at a global level, as well as those with an interest in each of the 133 countries analyzed in this text, including environmental policy makers in those countries.
