The History of the International Polar Years (IPYs) by Susan Barr,Cornelia Lüdecke Pdf

Although international scientific cooperation - particularly in meteorology - was established previous to the first International Polar Year, the IPY-1 (1882-83) is considered to be the first revolutionary step towards an extensive international cooperation in the polar areas for the benefit of science rather than national prestige and territorial gain. This was followed by IPY-2 (1932-33) and IPY-3 - actually the International Geophysical Year (1957-58) - before the crowning effort of IPY-4 (2007-08). The history of these years is recounted here and explains the political, economic, technical and scientific conditions and expectations that laid the basis for each IPY and which gradually expanded both the scope and extent of our understanding of the complexities in polar regions

A Vision for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 by Anonim Pdf

In 2007-2008, many nations around the world will host an intense, coordinated field campaign of polar observations, research, and analysis called the "International Polar Year." This report presents an overview of potential science themes, enabling technologies, and public outreach opportunities that can be used to focus International Polar Year on societal needs. The committee recommends that the U.S. scientific community and participating agencies use this opportunity to better understand environmental change and variability in the polar regions; explore new scientific frontiers ranging from the molecular to the planetary scales; and engage the public through varied educations and outreach activities.

Lessons and Legacies of International Polar Year 2007-2008 by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Polar Research Board,Committee on the Lessons and Legacies of International Polar Year 2007-2008 Pdf

International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY) was an intense, coordinated field campaign of observations, research, and analysis. It was the largest, most comprehensive campaign ever mounted to explore Earth's polar domains. Legacies and Lessons of the International Polar Year 2007-2008 summarizes how IPY engaged the public to communicate the relevance of polar research to the entire planet, strengthened connections with the Indigenous people of the Arctic, and established new observational networks. Legacies and Lessons of the International Polar Year 2007-2008 also addresses the objectives articulated for IPY in the 2004 National Research Council report, A Vision for International Polar Year (NRC, 2004). These objectives include: suggestions for scientific communities and agencies to use the IPY to initiate a sustained effort aimed at assessing large-scale environmental change and variability in the polar regions, the need to explore new scientific frontiers from the molecular to the planetary scale, investment in critical infrastructure and technology to guarantee that IPY 2007-2008 leaves enduring benefits for the nation and for the residents of northern regions, as well as increase public understanding of the importance of polar regions in the global system. Legacies and Lessons of the International Polar Year 2007-2008 explains how activities at both poles led to scientific discoveries that provided a step change in scientific understanding and helped translate scientific knowledge into policy-relevant information. At a time when the polar regions are undergoing a transformation from an icy wilderness to a new zone for human affairs, these insights could not be more timely or more relevant. From outreach activities that engaged the general public to projects that brought researchers from multiple disciplines and several nations together, the legacies of IPY extend far beyond the scientific results achieved, and valuable lessons learned from the process will guide future endeavors of similar magnitude.

Planning for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Polar Research Board,Committee on International Polar Year 2007-2008: Report of the Implementation Workshop Pdf

The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 will be an internationally coordinated campaign of polar observations, research, and analysis that will further our understanding of physical and social processes in the polar regions, examine their globally-connected role in the climate system, and establish research infrastructure for the future. Within this context, the IPY will galvanize new and innovative observations and research while at the same time building on and enhancing existing relevant initiatives. It also will serve as a mechanism to attract and develop a new generation of scientists and engineers with the versatility to tackle complex global issues. In 2004, the National Academies' Polar Research Board organized a workshop to explore the challenges associated with these initiatives. Planning for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 summarizes the presentations and discussions from this workshop.

Environment Canada's International Polar Year Achievements by Canada. Environnement Canada Pdf

"This report presents an overview of Environment Canada's efforts and contributions during the IPY 2007-2008. It describes some of the early scientific advancements that have been made, the innovative new ways of doing research that were developed, and most especially highlights the important role of collaborative partnerships. The impact of IPY does not end with the close of the official observation period. Far from being over, the work of analysing IPY data will continue for decades to come and many new insights will continue to be gained. We hope that this report will also serve as a catalyst, opening the doors to new collaborations and ideas in pursuit of a better understanding of the polar regions and their role in the global Earth system"--P. v.

Understanding Earth's Polar Challenges by Igor Krupnik,Ian Allison,Robin Bell,Paul Cutler,David Hik,Jerónimo López-Martínez,Volker Rachold,Eduard Sarukhanian,Colin Summerhayes Pdf

The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 co-sponsored by ICSU and WMO became the largest coordinated research program in the Earth's polar regions. It involved a large range of disciplines, from geophysics to ecology, also embracing human health, social sciences, and the humanities. All IPY projects included partners from several nations and/or from indigenous communities and polar residents' organizations. An estimated 50,000 researchers, local observers, educators, students, and support personnel from more than 60 nations were involved in the 228 international projects (170 in science, 1 in data management, and 57 in education and outreach) and related national efforts. IPY generated intensive research and observations in the Arctic and Antarctica over a two-year period, March 1, 2007-March 31, 2009, with many activities continuing beyond that date. IPY 2007-2008 generated much anticipated momentum with substantial funding for research and monitoring activities, new observational and analysis technologies, integrated system-level approaches, and a broadened circle of stakeholders. It introduced new research and organizational paradigms that will have a lasting legacy of their own. It showed the power of integrative vision, and consolidated new trans-disciplinary approaches.

Legacies and Change in Polar Sciences by Jessica M. Shadian,Monica Tennberg Pdf

Providing case study analyses of the politics of science in and around the International Polar Year of 2007-2008, this volume makes a distinct contribution to ongoing research focusing on the relationship between science, international politics, law and history. The contributors combine both interdisciplinary and multi-theoretical approaches to engage directly with the most recent debates in international relations scholarship, to include discussions of arctic climate change, governance issues, reflections on the Antarctic Treaty and the science-geopolitics interface amongst others. This is the first comprehensive account to look explicitly at the relationship between global politics and science through an account of the International Polar Years.

International Polar Year Canadian Science Report by Canadian Polar Commission Pdf

Each Canadian research project was required to be relevant to the needs of northern communities, involve Northerners in planning and implementing the research and include an element of capacity building for students and communities. Indeed, unlike previous IPYs, IPY 2007-2008 included people from the circumpolar world in the planning and execution of research projects, a recognition that local populations in the circumpolar world now have more control over their lives through land claim settlements and self government."--Introduction.
