Progress in Precision Engineering by Peter Seyfried,Horst Kunzmann,Pat McKeown,Manfred Weck Pdf

by Professor Pat McKeown Cranfield Precision Engineering, UK Member of Joint Organising Committee IPES6/UME2 PROGRESS IN PRECISION ENGINEERING Metal working companies in tool making, prototype manu facture and subcontract machining often use the label "precision engineering" to indicate that they are accustomed to working to finer tolerances than is normally expected in series production. But what we are concerned with in this and our preceding international conferences is much wider and deeper than this. Precision engineering is a grouping of multidis ciplinary scientific and engineering skills and techniques, firmly based on dimensional metrology, by which a wide range of new advanced technology products is made possible. In the last 5 - 10 years we have witnessed dramatic progress in precision engineering, particularly by the rapid development of its important sub-sets, micro-engineering and nanotechnology. I t is a part icular pleasure for me and my colleagues on the Organising Committee to welcome you to Braunschweig on the occasion of this the first joint international meeting in high precision manufacturing/precision engineering to be held in Germany. Our aim is to bring together the world's leading precision engineering practitioners from areas of application as diverse as optics for astronomy, micro and nano machining process research, design and development of ul tra preclslon machine tools and metrology equipment, advanced materials, bio medical research and new sensor/transducer systems.

Recent Advances in Metrology and Fundamental Constants by Terry J. Quinn,T. J. Quinn,Sigfrido Leschiutta,P. Tavella,Società italiana di fisica Pdf

Over the last decade of the 20th century, many improvements took place in the field of metrology and fundamental constants. These developments and improvements are discussed in this book. The old caesium SI second definition has found a new realization with the fountain approach, replacing the classical thermal atomic beam. The use of cold atom techniques, slowed down and cooled, has opened a number of unexpected avenues for metrology and fundamental constants, one of these possibilities being the atom interferometry. Another development was the demonstration of the possiblility of performing a direct frequency division in the visible, using short femtosecond pulses. Many other developments are also discussed.

Mechatronics '98 by J. Adolfsson,J. Karlsén,De Montfort University Pdf

Mechatronics, a synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic and computing engineering technologies, is a truly multidisciplinary approach to engineering. New products based on mechatronic principles are demonstrating reduced mechanical complexity, increased performance and often previously impossible capabilities. This book contains the papers presented at the UK Mechatronics Forum's 6th International Conference, held in Skövde, Sweden, in September 1998. Many of these high-quality papers illustrate the tremendous influence of mechatronics on such areas as manufacturing machinery, automotive engineering, textiles manufacture, robotics, and real-time control and vision systems. There are also papers describing developments in sensors, actuators, control and data processing techniques, such as fuzzy logic and neural networks, all of which have practical application to mechatronic systems.

Tribology of Abrasive Machining Processes by Ioan D. Marinescu,W. Brian Rowe,Boris Dimitrov,Ichiro Inaski Pdf

Recent and radically improved machining processes, from high wheel speeds to nanotechnology, have turned a spotlight on abrasive machining processes as a fertile area for further advancements. Written for researchers, students, engineers and technicians in manufacturing, this book presents a fundamental rethinking of important tribological elements of abrasive machining processes and their effects on process efficiency and product quality. Newer processes such as chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) and silicon wafer dicing can be better understood as tribological processes. Understanding the tribological principles of abrasive processes is crucial to discovering improvements in accuracy, production rate, and surface quality of products spanning all industries, from machine parts to ball bearings to contact lens to semiconductors.

Basics of Precision Engineering by Richard Leach,Stuart T. Smith Pdf

Advances in engineering precision have tracked with technological progress for hundreds of years. Over the last few decades, precision engineering has been the specific focus of research on an international scale. The outcome of this effort has been the establishment of a broad range of engineering principles and techniques that form the foundation of precision design. Today’s precision manufacturing machines and measuring instruments represent highly specialised processes that combine deterministic engineering with metrology. Spanning a broad range of technology applications, precision engineering principles frequently bring together scientific ideas drawn from mechanics, materials, optics, electronics, control, thermo-mechanics, dynamics, and software engineering. This book provides a collection of these principles in a single source. Each topic is presented at a level suitable for both undergraduate students and precision engineers in the field. Also included is a wealth of references and example problems to consolidate ideas, and help guide the interested reader to more advanced literature on specific implementations.

Nano and Micromachining by J. Paulo Davim,Mark J. Jackson Pdf

This book provides the fundamentals and recent advances in nano and micromachining for modern manufacturing engineering. It begins by providing an outline of nanomachining with emphasis being given to molecular dynamics, cutting, and chip formation, before discussing various advances in field and machining processes, including advances in diamond cutting tools, conventional processes (microturning, microdrilling, micromilling, etc.), grinding and ultra-precision processes, and non-conventional machining processes (laser micromachining, EDM micromachining, etc.). The coverage concludes with an evaluation of subsurface damages in nano and micromachining and a presentation of applications in industry. As such, not only is this book useful to those studying engineering or machining at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level, but it also serves as a useful reference guide for academics and engineers involved in these areas and related industries.

Coordinate Metrology by Jerzy A. Sładek Pdf

This book focuses on effective methods for assessing the accuracy of both coordinate measuring systems and coordinate measurements. It mainly reports on original research work conducted by Sladek’s team at Cracow University of Technology’s Laboratory of Coordinate Metrology. The book describes the implementation of different methods, including artificial neural networks, the Matrix Method, the Monte Carlo method and the virtual CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), and demonstrates how these methods can be effectively used in practice to gauge the accuracy of coordinate measurements. Moreover, the book includes an introduction to the theory of measurement uncertainty and to key techniques for assessing measurement accuracy. All methods and tools are presented in detail, using suitable mathematical formulations and illustrated with numerous examples. The book fills an important gap in the literature, providing readers with an advanced text on a topic that has been rapidly developing in recent years. The book is intended for master and PhD students, as well as for metrology engineers working at industrial and research laboratories. It not only provides them with a solid background for using existing coordinate metrology methods; it is also meant to inspire them to develop the state-of-the-art technologies that will play an important role in supporting quality growth and innovation in advanced manufacturing.
