Introduction to Political Economy (Routledge Revivals) by E. J. Mishan Pdf

First published in 1982, Introduction to Political Economy is a clear and concise introduction to the normative aspects of economics by one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject. In this highly readable book, Professor Mishan takes the student to the heart of the subject without recourse to algebra and with only the simplest of diagrams. The author carefully distinguishes the various meanings of the terms political economy, normative economics, welfare economics and allocative economics. He considers the standard allocation rules and the crucial concepts of consumer surplus and rent, which are so important to cost-benefit analysis, while then going on to resolve the paradoxes of the efficiency criterion. Lastly, Professor Mishan assesses both the social worth of radical conservatism, which is associated with the Chicago School of Economics, and the relevance of the modern theory of welfare economics to social welfare.

An Introduction to Political Economy by Richard T. Ely Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to Political Economy In offering to the reader this revision of the Introduction, to Political Economy, it seems advisable to explain some of the circumstances which have called it forth, and which have consequently determined its character. In particular is it important to explain its relation to the author's Outlines of Economics, in order to avoid confusion and possible inconvenience. The "Introduction" was first published in 1889, and has since then without change passed through many editions. The "Outlines," which appeared in 1893, was originally intended to be simply a revised edition of the "Introduction," but finally grew into something quite different. It was therefore decided not to withdraw the earlier work, and in the preface to the "Outlines" it was stated that "in any future revisions of the two books an effort will be made to develop still further the peculiarities of each; the aim of the 'Introduction' being to furnish chiefly historical and descriptive material; the aim of the 'Outlines' being to give a systematic sketch of theory." Since the appearance of the "Outlines" the author has been gratified to learn from many sources that his course at that time has met with approval; and in this revision he seeks to carry out the intention to which reference has just been made. It has not been attempted, however, to make the revision in any way a new book, but rather to keep it essentially the same book while developing it in the direction indicated. The chief purpose of the revision has been to remove obvious defects, to bring statistical statements down to date, and to change theoretical expositions, so far as the advance of economic thought clearly requires that this should be done. On the other hand, it is altogether foreign to the purpose of this work to enter into theoretical controversies. Political Economy in the Modern State by Harold A. Innis Pdf

Political Economy in the Modern State is Harold Innis’s transitional and, in some respects, his most transformative book. Completed in 1946, it is a collection of fifteen chapters plus a remarkable Preface selected and crafted to address four main themes: the problem of power and peace in the post-War era; the ascent of specialized and mechanized forms of knowledge involving, most particularly, the media, the state, and the academy; the crisis facing civilization and, more generally, the modern penchant for unreflexive short-term thinking in the face of mounting contradictions; and Innis’s growing focus on what would be called media bias. In this new edition, editors Robert E. Babe and Edward A. Comor provide not only a general introduction to Innis’s largely forgotten book but also dedicated introductions to each of its fifteen chapters and a comprehensive index. Together, Babe and Comor demonstrate how Innis’s volume reflects a shift in Innis’s focus, away from analytical relativism towards, instead, a reflexive search for objective truths.
