Introduction to the European Inland Waterways by Gordon Knight Pdf

Several hundred boat owners take to the inland waterways of Europe every year, either for a change of cruising ground, a shortcut to the Med or Baltic or simply as a retreat from the rigours of sea sailing with advancing years. However, sources of information are scarce to answer such key questions as What's it like? Where are the best places? Do you need qualifications? Are there rules and regulations? What sort of boat is suitable? What preparations are required? Where can I go for maps and guides and further information? This new guide is designed to provide all the information needed to embark on the continental inland waterways. Written by members of the Cruising Association's European Inland Waterways Section (EIWS) and edited by Gordon Knight, the guide is aimed at both yacht and motor boat owners and includes advice on choosing or adapting a boat; the qualifications needed; preparing a boat to tackle the rivers, canals and locks; navigating safely; obtaining supplies and coping with communications and transport. Separate chapters on the four main cruising countries - France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands - describe the principal inland cruising routes and their attractions and list numerous additional sources of information from official bodies and tourist organisations, plus useful free apps to supplement them. Finally, it provides a brief taster of the attractions to be discovered further afield in countries such as Poland, Sweden and Norway. It also includes a 20 per cent discount offer on first year's membership for purchasers joining the CA online during the year.

RYA European Waterways Regulations (G-G17) by Royal Yachting Association,Tam Murrell Pdf

This 2022, third edition of RYA European Waterways Regulation has been updated to match CEVNI 6, the new version of the code governing navigation on some of the European inland waterways. Covering subject areas such as Basic Rules, Visual Signs, Buoyage, Designated Areas, Sound Signals and more, this is the ideal book for those wanting to pass the CEVNI test, a legal requirement for those cruising the European inland waterways. Other edition updates include: • Changes to the introduction to clarify how CEVNI applies to those using European inland waterways. • Updates to terminology, lights and signage to reflect CEVNI version 6. • Regulation changes are now reflected in the text. The CEVNI code was devised by the United Nations in 1985 and governs navigation on all interconnected European inland waterways. It was established to enable boatmen of all nationalities to communicate, and to understand what is going on without the need to speak each other’s language. By law, all those cruising on European inland waterways must have passed the CEVNI test and have a reference copy onboard. Knowledgeable author Tam Murrell has been cruising since the late 1950’s, working with narrow boats and barges on UK inland waters, to small coasters trading in and around the Thames estuary and into Northern Europe. Since 1995, Tam and his wife have spent much of their time on continental waterways on their 24m Dutch barge. As the RYA’s supporting material for the CEVNI test, RYA European Waterways Regulation is the ideal book for those wanting to cruise the inland waterways of Europe. Standardization of Inland Waterways' Dimensions by Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses. Permanent Technical Committee I. Working Group 9 Pdf

"The availability of zero-emission fuels infrastructure, including onshore electric power supply, will be key to enable greenhouse gas (GHG) zero-emission vessels and increase the competitiveness of IWT as a whole, at a time when other modes of transport are reducing their ecological footprint. The objective of the TG is in line with the declaration of PIANC, namely developing approaches to decarbonise the operation of port and navigation infrastructure (i.e. move to GHG zero emissions), whilst at the same time enabling the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from vessels by providing the necessary facilities, infrastructure and, where appropriate, incentives. For this purpose, TG 234 was tasked to identify knowledge gaps and major challenges that need to be urgently addressed and advise PIANC on further actions."--Introduction.

Inland Waterways of Germany by Barry Sheffield Pdf

This is the only comprehensive directory to the entire navigable German waterway system available in English. After a general introduction to the area, details of German formalities and cruising notes, each river and canal is described in detail and supported by a table of distances indicating locks, bridges, mooring places and other features. The text is supported by small scale mapping and colour photographs. Barry Sheffield's first edition of this book was published in 1995 shortly after the reunification of Germany. He had spent several years exploring the navigable waterways and, with the assistance of Konrad Nussbaum, the acknowledged expert on German rivers and canals, he produced this authoritative work on the subject. Barry Sheffield died some years ago and this revised edition has been produced as a result of many contributions from users of the original book. Catherine and John Best have completely recompiled many of the original tables, brought information up to date and supplied excellent new photographs. Robert Thomas has contributed a more general update, in particular to the introductory sections.

Design of Contemporary Inland Waterway Vessels by Dejan Radojčić,Aleksandar Simić,Nikola Momčilović,Milorad Motok,Benjamin Friedhoff Pdf

Inland Waterway (IW), or river vessels are in every respect different from the seagoing ships. The professional literature is mostly focused on conventional seagoing fleets, leaving a gap in the documentation of design practices for IW vessels. The principal attribute that differentiates river vessels from the seagoing ships is the low, or shallow, draught due to water depth restrictions. This book addresses key aspects for the design of contemporary, shallow draught IW vessels for the transport of dry cargo (containers and bulk cargo). Most of the logic that is presented is applicable to the design of river vessels for any river, but the material that is presented is focused on vessels for the River Danube and its tributaries. The term ‘contemporary river vessel’ assumes that the present-day technology and current Danube river infrastructure are taken into consideration in its design. It is believed that the technologies and concepts that are proposed here are applicable for all new vessel designs for the next 10 to 15 years. Other innovative technologies should be considered for designs beyond that horizon. Moreover, nowadays contemporary IW vessel must be in harmony with the Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) policies and hence special attention is paid to both ecology and efficiency. Note however that shipowners and ship operators usually tend to choose the conventional cost-effective transport technologies. Given that potential divergence of interests, the concepts and technologies treated here may be regarded as innovative.
