Introduction to the physics of the electric arc and its application to the welding of metals by Paulo J. Modenesi,Andrés M. Moreno Uribe Pdf

This book presents an overview of the electric arc characteristics, particularly those that are important for welding applications. This more scientific approach intends to provide insights for a better understanding of the phenomena that control the behavior of an arc welding process. The text aims to emphasize physical phenomena that are important to arc welding, not dealing with technological, industrial or metallurgical aspects of welding. Among other topics, the following topics are included in this manuscript: heat sources for fusion welding, electric discharges in gases, arc evaluation techniques, electric arc profile, metal transfer, wire melting rate and process stability.

Modeling, Sensing and Control of Gas Metal Arc Welding by S. Ozcelik,K. Moore Pdf

Arc welding is one of the key processes in industrial manufacturing, with welders using two types of processes - gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). This new book provides a survey-oriented account of the modeling, sensing, and automatic control of the GMAW process.Researchers are presented with the most recent information in the areas of modeling, sensing and automatic control of the GMAW process, collecting a number of original research results on the topic from the authors and colleagues. Providing an overview of a variety of topics, this book looks at the classification of various welding processes; the modeling aspects of GMAW; physics of welding; metal transfer characteristics; weld pool geometry; process voltages and variables; power supplies; sensing (sensors for arc length, weld penetration control, weld pool geometry, using optical and intelligent sensors); control techniques of PI, PID, multivariable control, adaptive control, and intelligent control. Finally, the book illustrates a case study presented by the authors and their students at Idaho State University, in collaboration with researchers at the Idaho National Engineering and Environment Laboratory.

An Introduction to Plasma Physics and Its Space Applications, Volume 1 by Luis Conde Pdf

The growing number of scientific and technological applications of plasma physics in the field of Aerospace Engineering requires that graduate students and professionals understand their principles. This introductory book is the expanded version of class notes of lectures I taught for several years to students of Aerospace Engineering and Physics. It is intended as a reading guide, addressed to students and non-specialists to tackle later with more advanced texts. To make the subject more accessible the book does not follow the usual organization of standard textbooks in this field and is divided in two parts. The first introduces the basic kinetic theory (molecular collisions, mean free path, etc.) of neutral gases in equilibrium in connection to the undergraduate physics courses. The basic properties of ionized gases and plasmas (Debye length, plasma frequencies, etc.) are addressed in relation to their equilibrium states and the collisional processes at the microscopic level. The physical description of short and long-range (Coulomb) collisions and the more relevant collisions (elementary processes) between electrons' ions and neutral atoms or molecules are discussed. The second part introduces the physical description of plasmas as a statistical system of interacting particles introducing advanced concepts of kinetic theory, (non-equilibrium distribution functions, Boltzmann collision operator, etc). The fluid transport equations for plasmas of electron ions and neutral atoms and the hydrodynamic models of interest in space science and plasma technology are derived. The plasma production in the laboratory in the context of the physics of electric breakdown is also discussed. Finally, among the myriad of aerospace applications of plasma physics, the low pressure microwave electron multipactor breakdown and plasma thrusters for space propulsion are presented in two separate chapters.

LOCKS, SAFES, AND SECURITY by Marc Weber Tobias Pdf

This new second edition, many years in the making, provides the reader with the information that is needed to understand both traditional mechanisms as well as the most modern and sophisticated security technology incorporated into locks and how to bypass them. The author presents extremely detailed theoretical and practical information in order to facilitate a thorough understanding of the complex subject matter. While the first edition covered many topics in summary fashion, this revised work examines each facet of the subject in extensive and, when required, intricate detail. Law enforcement, forensic examiners, the intelligence community, security management personnel, locksmiths, architects, security specialists, special operations personnel, lawyers, and others need to have this critical information presented in this book in order to deal effectively with their missions and be able to assess vulnerability through a solid theoretical understanding of the subjects covered. Information in this book has been gathered from many sources, including locksmiths, manufacturers, instructors from recognized specialized entry schools, vendors, lock suppliers, designers, engineers, inventors, forensic examiners, and others. The subject of this book is very complicated, diverse, and global. There is a great deal of history and technology incorporated within the modern lock, container, and security system. The focus of this text is to put all of this information into an understandable and useable format. For an online tour visit www.security.org.
