Inventing Atlantic Canada by Corey Slumkoski Pdf

When Newfoundland entered the Canadian Confederation in 1949, it was hoped it would promote greater unity between the Maritime provinces, as Term 29 of the Newfoundland Act explicitly linked the region's economic and political fortunes. On the surface, the union seemed like an unprecedented opportunity to resurrect the regional spirit of the Maritime Rights movement of the 1920s, which advocated a cooperative approach to addressing regional underdevelopment. However, Newfoundland's arrival did little at first to bring about a comprehensive Atlantic Canadian regionalism. Inventing Atlantic Canada is the first book to analyse the reaction of the Maritime provinces to Newfoundland's entry into Confederation. Drawing on editorials, government documents, and political papers, Corey Slumkoski examines how each Maritime province used the addition of a new provincial cousin to fight underdevelopment. Slumkoski also details the rise of regional cooperation characterized by the Atlantic Revolution of the mid-1950s, when Maritime leaders began to realize that by acting in isolation their situations would only worsen.

Atlantic Canada and Confederation by David Alexander Pdf

The nine essays in this posthumous volume are linked by a recurring theme - an affirmation of the integrity and viability of the small society and culture in the economic blocs and political federations of the modern world. Alexander maintained that there was an economic base for the provinces of Atlantic Canada in the resources of the region and the genius of its people. In these essays he launched an assault on the beliefs that hindered the develpment of that base while searching for policies necessary to sustain that society. He indicated Canadian trade policies. He stated that neither the date nor the fact of entry into Confederation offered an economic panacea for any of the Atlantic provinces - but that the question of political and economic accmmodation within the larger federation was critical. Alexander's study of the rise and decline of the shipping industry in Atlantic Canada in the nineteenth century revealed a regional industry with resources, capital and entrepreneurial talent to compete successfully in international trade. It also reinforced his belief that subsequent regional disadvantages grew as much from institutional and political factors as from the unimpeded operation of comparative advantage and market forces. The volume pleads for a stronger federalism based on the belief that the survival of the Canadian Confederation depends upon the rebirth of pride and self-respect among Canada's diverse peoples. These essays are part of that heritage and that rebirth.

Great Maritime Inventions, 1833-1950 by Mario Theriault Pdf

Great Maritime Inventions 1833-1950 is a delightful look at how innovative Maritime ideas changed the world. Between 1833 and 1950, over 3,300 patents were granted to residents of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. From the scuba tank to the variable pitch propeller to two-piece long underwear, Great Maritime Inventions profiles the best of the best. Included are inventions that are considered to be great advances in science, those that have substantially changed the course of development of technology, or those that have enjoyed a lasting success that can still be remembered or observed to this day. All of the inventions described in the book were completely novel in their day. Each patent is first in its classification, or else its claims are so broad that the intellectual property protection it gave covered every possible precursor. Before a patent was granted, an applicant had to declare that their invention was entirely new. Each application then underwent a thorough examination by expert examiners at the patent office. Each of the patents in Great Maritime Inventions were found to represent knowledge newly available to the public, and to be an important step forward in engineering or in developing consumer products that enhance our lives. Not all inventions were spectacular. In fact, many of these inventions never made it into the history books. It is only after fifty years or more that we realize the influence that every one of these inventions has had on our society. Each invention, large or small, was an important link in the chain of evolution of science and useful arts and has improved the way we live today.

Where Once They Stood by Raymond Benjamin Blake,Melvin Baker Pdf

"'A masterful examination of Newfoundland-Canada relations from 18691949'-Corey Slumkowski, author of Inventing Atlantic Canada: Regionalism and the Maritime Reaction to Newfoundland's Entry into Canadian Confederation. Coming on the 70th anniversary of Newfoundland joining Confederation, as well as the 150th anniversary of its first rejection of Canada, Where Once They Stood challenges popular notions that those who voted against Confederation in 1869 and for union with Canada in 1948 were uninformed, incompetent, ignorant, and gullible. Raymond B. Blake and Melvin Baker demonstrate that, in fact, voters fully understood the issues at stake in both cases, and in 1948 women too became instrumental in determining the final outcome, voting for Canada, believing it provided the best opportunities for their children. 'Blake and Baker make a persuasive case, turn[ing] the conspiracy on its head and demonstrat[ing] how Newfoundlanders knew what they were doing and expressly acted in their own self-interest when they chose Canada. . . . It is hard to imagine any two other authors who would know more about the subject.' -David MacKenzie, author of Inside the Atlantic Triangle."--

How The Scots Invented Canada by Ken McGoogan Pdf

Canadians of Scottish descent, who today total over 4.7 million, have never made up more than 16 per cent of Canada’s population. Yet they have supplied thirteen of twenty-two Canadian prime ministers, and have made proportionate contributions in exploration, education, banking, military service, railroading, invention, literature, you name it. Award-winning author Ken McGoogan has written a vivid, sweeping narrative showcasing more than sixty Scots who have shaped Canada. They include fur traders Alexander Mackenzie and the “Scotch West-Indian” James Douglas, who established national boundaries; politicians John A. Macdonald and Nellie McClung, who created a system of government; and visionaries Tommy Douglas, James Houston, Doris Anderson and Marshall McLuhan, who turned Canada into a complex nation that celebrates diversity. McGoogan toasts Robbie Burns, recalls the first settlers to wade ashore at Pictou, Nova Scotia, and celebrates such hybrid figures as the Cherokee Scot John Norton and Cuthbert Grant, father of the Métis nation. In How the Scots Invented Canada, Ken McGoogan uncovers the Scottish history of a nation-building miracle.

Atlantic Canada by Benoit Prieur Pdf

We in the Ulysses offices think we have it hard when deadlines are approaching, those maps still don't quite fit and the sidewalk cafes and bars of St. Denis Street here in Montreal beckon on warm summer evenings. But our desk-bound troubles are minuscule compared to the harried experiences our authors endure creating the "most cultural how-to travel guides" available: wading through crowds of revelers in Chicago after the Bulls Championship win, dodging chickens and dogs on Nicaraguan highways, getting mugged in Nassau and Lisbon, or being stranded by a train derailment in Saskatchewan. Then again, these adventurers are part of the joy of traveling, of getting to the heart of a destination ... This second edition now includes the province of Newfoundland and Labrador along with New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Picturesque fishing villages, the Cabot Trail, national parks, beaches, and the brand new Confederation Bridge linking Prince Edward Island to the mainland.
