This study analyzes foreign investment in Colombia’s financial system, chronicling major changes in legislation, describing how investment flows evolved over time, and comparing performance of foreign–owned versus domestic banks. Panel data estimations reveal that financial liberalization in general had a beneficial impact on bank behavior in Colombia. Although the positive contribution of foreign entry may be overstated in recent studies by not controlling for other liberalization factors, foreign (and domestic) entry beginning in 1990 did improve bank behavior by enhancing operative efficiency and competition. However, this came at the expense of a deterioration in the loan quality of domestic banks.

This book details my decision to invest in Colombia's financial markets through at least two companies belonging to the infamous Grupo Aval. After spending several years in Colombia and having had several bad experiences there in life and other business projects, I thought it was time to trust my money to the professionals, the largest financial organization in the country, what could go wrong? Well, just about everything. We will see how the sales people from Casa de Bolsa knowing me to be a novice investor and basically tricked me into investing my savings into a product I was told was low risk, in fact telling me that my capital was guaranteed, but actually I was investing in a private capital fund; the highest risk investment this side of cryptocurrency. I will detail the whole process from start to finish, including verbal conversations, whatsapp messages and official company emails, which will show that the sales people from Casa de Bolsa, while representing the Fiduciaria de Occidente, really didn't understand the investment themselves, or if they did, they had been instructed to mis-sell it using terms such as a "loan" and "roll over" and high "liquidity". Where all these terms were misused and misrepresented the investment to me. In the end I lost my savings due to the unprofessional and unethical nature of these companies and I wanted to warn others before they fall into similar traps of trusting these companies or indeed perhaps any company related to the Grupo Aval, a company who has to pay millions to the US government due to a recent corruption scandal involving the Colombian government and payments through the Grupo Aval. So, if you are interested in a foreigners point of view on Colombia and his investment activities there, not just in the financial markets and funds, but with other business people, read on.
