Irish Art Songs by Meg Fitzgerald,Guido Boger Pdf

This delightful collection of Irish songs has been compiled and set as Art Songs by the European Duo Chitarra Canta, featuring soprano and flutist, Meg Fitzgerald, and classical guitarist, Guido Böger. Having noted the dearth of good concert literature for this type of duo, the performers, both well-versed in the Celtic and Classical music traditions, and adept at creating their own arrangements, decided to include such songs in their programs. with this volume, they want to share them with other performers and enthusiasts. These songs can be used equally well for the stage, recitals, pub singing, and private events, or for simple pleasure. the collection consists of a wide variety of songs, the music being completely written out for voice and classical guitar, but also with chords and annotations for a variety use. Featured here are such well-known songs as the Last Rose of Summer, Siúil a Rúin, or She moved through the Fair, along with many other lyrical gems, in unique, wonderfully inspired arrangements. Audio downloads of the songs, as performed by the authors, are available with the purchase of this book, sampled from their CD, Aisling – Irish Art Songs and Music. the complete CD can also be purchased by writing to: [email protected] These arrangements for voice and guitar... well approach, ... the genuine form of Irish folk music. the choice and interpretation of of the pieces... give ample evidence as to the familiarity of soprano Meg Fitzgerald, and guitarist Guido Böger with this music. Focus: Irish Traditional Music by Sean Williams Pdf

Focus: Irish Traditional Music is an introduction to the instrumental and vocal traditions of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as Irish music in the context of the Irish diaspora. Ireland's size relative to Britain or to the mainland of Europe is small, yet its impact on musical traditions beyond its shores has been significant, from the performance of jigs and reels in pub sessions as far-flung as Japan and Cape Town, to the worldwide phenomenon of Riverdance. Focus: Irish Traditional Music interweaves dance, film, language, history, and other interdisciplinary features of Ireland and its diaspora. The accompanying CD presents both traditional and contemporary sounds of Irish music at home and abroad.

A Hazardous Melody of Being by Seoirse Bodley Pdf

"Seoirse Bodley is one of the best-known senior figures of contemporary music in Ireland. This book seeks to examine his engagement with the poetry of Michael O'Siadhail and the making of these song cycles. It assesses the joint contribution to Irish art song and seeks to understand its roots in and departure from European tradition." "This apograph is the first publication of Bodley's O'Siadhail song cycles and is the first book to explore the composer's lyrical modernity from a number of perspectives. Lorriane Byrne Bodley's insightful introduction describes in detail the development and essence of Bodley's musical thinking, the European influences he absorbed which linger in these cycles, and the importance of his work as a composer of Irish art song. Through a blend of close analysis of Bodley's songs and wide-ranging engagement with both poetry and music, this book sheds new light on Bodley's integral part in fashioning Irish art song. It analyses the way Bodley's song has been harnessed both to legitimate and to challenge national art song. And it identifies elements of Bodley's musical style which are shaped by European tradition."--BOOK JACKET.

Singing in Irish Gaelic by Mary McLaughlin Pdf

Gaelic songs are beautiful to listen to and to sing, but until now it has been extremely difficult for anyone without knowledge of the Irish language (Gaelic) to sing the songs of that tradition. A must for anyone who has always longed to sing the old songs of Ireland, this book and CD decodes the Irish language for those who aspire to sing these songs without them having to undertake an Irish language course. The fourteen songs are presented in an accessible fashion. On the CD, the author speaks each phrase slowly, leaving a pause for the student to imitate the pronunciation. The author then sings each song in a simple, plain style, conducive to learning. The book has the sheet music, guitar chords, phonetics, Irish lyrics, and a translation and background to each song. There is an introduction which gives information on traditional singing in Irish as well as a guide to the phonetic system used. The songs are graded linguistically and musically so that the student can build up skills as she or he progresses through the book.

Looking Back by Orla Shannon Pdf

This thesis offers the first comprehensive study of the song collections of Ina Boyle (1889- 1967). Its primary aim is to contribute to the growing body of research on one of Ireland's most prolific composers by conducting an analytical survey of a hitherto unexplored genre of her compositional output. The thesis opens with a contextualisation of Boyle's critical and posthumous reception to give a reappraisal of her musical legacy. Through this reappraisal, it assesses the trajectory of the composer's career development in light of the cultural attitudes, gender-normative roles, and socio-political upheavals of the last century in Ireland. It proposes six factors to have impeded publications and performances of her music, as derived from primary sources, including diary entries, ephemera, and memoranda. It also considers the present-day reception of Boyle's music, interrogating both her status within the canon of Irish art music today and the extent to which her music has experienced a revival. For the most-part, the composer's song collections existed as unpublished handwritten scores held in the archives of Trinity College Dublin. The thesis contains new typeset critical editions of these scores, allowing for the first analysis of their contents and for a survey of Boyle's vocal output over her long compositional career. It presents an evaluation of the composer's text-setting techniques using an analytical framework established by Peter F. Stacey and draws on the six criteria of this framework to critically examine her output of song collections with a focus on musico-poetic associations. From this analysis, the idiosyncratic nuances and developments of her writing style are uncovered, and a new appreciation for Boyle's compositional voice realised.

The Globalization of Irish Traditional Song Performance by Susan H. Motherway Pdf

In The Globalization of Irish Traditional Song Performance Susan Motherway examines the ways in which performers mediate the divide between local and global markets by negotiating this dichotomy in performance practice. In so doing, she discusses the globalizing processes that exert transformative influences upon traditional musics and examines the response to these influences by Irish traditional song performers. In developing this thesis the book provides an overview of the genre and its subgenres, illustrates patterns of musical change extant within the tradition as a result of globalization, and acknowledges music as a medium for re-negotiating an Irish cultural identity within the global. Given Ireland’s long history of emigration and colonisation, globalization is recognised as both a synchronic and a diachronic phenomenon. Motherway thus examines Anglo-Irish song and songs of the Irish Diaspora. Her analysis reaches beyond essentialist definitions of the tradition to examine evolving sub-genres such as Country & Irish, Celtic and World Music. She also recognizes the singing traditions of other ethnic groups on the island of Ireland including Orange-Order, Ulster-Scots and Traveller song. In so doing, she shows the disparity between native conceptions and native realities in respect to Irish cultural Identity.
