Irish South Australia by Susan Arthure,Fidelma Breen,Stephanie James,Dymphna Lonergan Pdf

Its capital is named after German-born Queen Adelaide, its main street after her English husband, King William IV, so it is not surprising that little is known about South Australia's Irish background. However, the first European to discover Adelaide's River Torrens in 1836 was Cork-born and educated George Kingston, who was deputy surveyor to Colonel Light; the river was named in turn for Derryman Colonel Torrens, Chairman of the South Australian Colonisation Commission. Adelaide's first judge and first police commissioner were immigrants from Kerry and Limerick. Irish South Australia charts Irish settlement from as far north as Pekina, to the state's south-east and Mount Gambier. It follows the diverse fortunes of the Irish-born elite such as George Kingston and Charles Harvey Bagot, as well as doctors, farmers, lawyers, orphans, parliamentarians, pastoralists and publicans who made South Australia their home, with various shades of political and religious beliefs: Anglicans, Catholics, Dissenters, Federationalists, Freemasons, Home Rulers, nationalists, and Orangemen. Irish markers can be found in South Australian archaeology, architecture, geography and history. Some of these are visible in the hundreds of Irish place names that dot the South Australian landscape, such as Clare, Donnybrook, Dublin, Kilkenny, Navan, Rostrevor, Tipperary, and Tralee (as Tarlee). The book's editors are twentieth-century Irish immigrants from Dublin (Dymphna Lonergan), Portadown (Fidelma Breen), Trim (Susan Arthure), and by descent from eight Irish-born (Stephanie James).

Irish Settlers in South Australia by Bernadette Thakur Pdf

Irish Settlers in South Australia is the story of two families: the O'Toole family from County Wicklow and the Hayes family from County Galway. The O'Tooles arrived in South Australia in 1840 and the Hayes family in 1849. In the first decades after their arrival they struggled as poor farmers on small 80-acre blocks of land in the districts north of Adelaide. When, in 1869, it became possible to buy land on credit, they joined the migration of settlers into the Mid North. From their origins as impoverished tenant farmers in Ireland, they became respectable landowners in South Australia.Using a diverse range of sources, the author documents her ancestors' hitherto untold story. The sheer sweep of their lives as they endured hardship and misfortune to create a better life for themselves and their descendants is a story worth telling. This book is more than a family history however, for the story of the Hayes and O'Toole families is part of the larger history of South Australia in the nineteenth century.

The Irish Emigrant Experience in Australia by John O'Brien,Pauric Travers Pdf

Who were the Irish in Australia? Where did they come from? How did they fare in Australia and how did their experience differ from those of other emigrant groups, if at all? Does ethnicity matter or does the migrant army transcend nationality? These and other questions are addressed by a distinguished group of international scholars in this collection of essays which represents major contribution to our understanding of Irish and Australian history. By investigating the Irish origins and Australian outcomes of Irish emigration to the antipodes since the departure of the first Irish convict ship from Cork in 1791, this book vividly illustrates the way in which emigration responded to circumstances at both ends of the emigrant chain. It also demonstrates more clearly than before the heterogeneity of Irish emigration and the diversity of the emigrant experience.

A New History of the Irish in Australia by Dianne Hall,Elizabeth Malcolm Pdf

Irish immigrants – although despised as inferior on racial and religious grounds and feared as a threat to national security – were one of modern Australia’s most influential founding peoples. In his landmark 1986 book The Irish in Australia, Patrick O’Farrell argued that the Irish were central to the evolution of Australia’s national character through their refusal to accept a British identity. A New History of the Irish in Australia takes a fresh approach. It draws on source materials not used until now and focuses on topics previously neglected, such as race, stereotypes, gender, popular culture, employment discrimination, immigration restriction, eugenics, crime and mental health. This important book also considers the Irish in Australia within the worldwide Irish diaspora. Elizabeth Malcolm and Dianne Hall reveal what Irish Australians shared with Irish communities elsewhere, while reminding us that the Irish–Australian experience was – and is – unique. ‘A necessary corrective to the false unity of the term “Anglo-Celtic”, this beautifully controlled and clear-sighted intervention is timely and welcome. It gives us not just a history of the Irish in Australia, but a skilful account of how identity is formed relationally, often through sectarian, class, ethnic and racial divisions. A masterful book.’ — Professor Rónán McDonald, University of Melbourne

The Irish in Australia by Patrick James O'Farrell Pdf

"Since the first fleet of 1788, the Irish have been coming to Australia. They were the beginning of a central, colourful and profoundly influential element in Australia's evolution into a nation different and separate from Britain. Commencing with Irish convicts, feared and despised - 'nearly as wild themselves as the cattle' - following free Irish immigrants - and settlers into the often hostile texture of colonial life, they came to see themselves as patriotic Australians, integrating into all levels and facets of national life and character, many occupying the highest positions in the land in government, law and commerce." "This edition features a revised final chapter, which deals with the changing relationship between Australians, new Irish and Irish Australians. In examining these changes, Patrick O'Farrell considers the effect of major government initiatives associated with the policies of multiculturalism introduced in Australia from the 1970s."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Oceans of Consolation by David Fitzpatrick Pdf

"An ocean of consolation" was what one young Irish emigrant in rural Australia called a letter from his father in County Clare in 1855. Similar strength of feeling is often found in the intriguing letters that David Fitzpatrick has unearthed for this extraordinary collection. Oceans of Consolation offers historians and family researchers novel and sophisticated ways of reading old letters. It opens to us the daily preoccupations of ordinary women and men with little education and fewer material possessions, as they try to overcome the separation from family and friends created by emigration. Fitzpatrick includes the personal correspondence of fourteen families of Irish emigrants in the Australian colonies, giving equal attention to letters to and from Australia. He reproduces in full more than one hundred letters dating from 1843 to 1906, and includes a generous selection of contemporary engravings and photographs. Fitzpatrick's detailed commentaries offer biographical narratives for all of these emigrants, tracing their Irish backgrounds and Australian careers. Parting company with editors of comparable collections, he pays special attention to the words and idiom by which letterwriters expressed their everyday concerns and sought or offered reassurance and advice. He believes that personal letters provide not only unique evidence of the hopes and fears of emigrants but also an important avenue for exploring popular Irish culture.

Not the Same Sky by Evelyn Conlon Pdf

By 1848 famine has ravaged Ireland, and London remains undecided about what to do. A shortage of female labour in Australia offers a kind of solution and so, over the following two years, more than 4000 Irish girls are shipped across vast oceans to an unimaginable world in the new colony. On Sunday 28 October 1849, one of these ships, the Thomas Arbuthnot, sets sail from Plymouth with a cargo of girls under the care of Surgeon-superintendent Charles Strutt. Not the Same Sky tells the story of Honora, Julia, Bridget and Anne. It observes them on the voyage, examining their relationship of trust with Charles Strutt, and follows them from Sydney as they become women of Australia, negotiating their new lives as best they can. A stark, poetic intensity gives these young women historical importance and human presence in an elegant and subtle novel suffused with humour. 'Conlon is one of Ireland's major truly creative writers.' - Books Ireland Evelyn Conlon is a novelist, short-story writer and radio essayist. Born in Ireland, she lived in Australia for a number of years. Her last novel Skin of Dreams was shortlisted for Irish Novel of the Year. The title story of her collection Taking Scarlet as a Real Colour was performed at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival. Ireland, Australia and New Zealand by Laurence M. Geary,Andrew J. McCarthy Pdf

Twenty contributors offer a fascinating range and diversity of explorations of Irish-Australian-New Zealand shared culture including material culture, folk culture, literature, music, dance, architecture, written and oral cultural transmission, cultural influences, intercommunal cultural transference, and cultural assimilation and dissemination. Often neglected political links are explored, with Carla King assessing the impact of Michael Davitt's Australian tour in 1895 on his subsequent radical politics. De Valera's only visit to Australia/New Zealand in 1948, as part of his 'anti-partition' world tour, analysed in the context of media both in Ireland. Ru¡n O'Donnell explores uncharted territory in reviewing perceptions of the IRA in mid-twentieth century Australia. Literary contributions range from Frances Devlin-Glass's reconsideration of Mary Durack's Kings in Grass Castles, to Brega Webb's engaging biographical study of Mary Anne Kelly, better known as 'Eva of the Nation' for her poetic contributions in the lead in to the suppression of the Young Ireland press in 1848. There is a balance between particular experiences of emigrants, and a reassessment of some traditional views. Academics, including Brad Patterson, Malcolm Campbell and Lyndon Fraser, explore many of these issues with new material and reconsiderations of traditional approaches. Irish history abounds with biographies, and the book contains some fascinating Irish personalities who contributed enormously to the making of Australia, ranging from an engineer, a lawyer, a musicians and a diplomat. The Irish have always impacted, of course, and Richard Davis provides a splendid historical survey of the influence of the Irish on Van Diemen's Land/Tasmania from Bushrangers to Celtic Tiger.

From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Servants Depots in Colonial South Australia by Marie Ann Steiner Pdf

Marie Steiner's SERVANTS DEPOTS IN COLONIAL SOUTH AUSTRALIA is a fascinating account of a little-known period in South Australian history. In 1855 the colony of South Australia experienced 'excessive female immigration', with large numbers of single females arriving from the British Isles to work as servants. When an economic downturn led to a shortage of domestic help positions, the Colonial Government was moved to establish servants' depots around South Australia to house them. The book details the day-to-day running of these depots, and reveals much about the attitudes towards women in colonial South Australia.
