Medical, Genetic & Behavioral Risk Factors of Irish Wolfhounds by Ross D. Clark Pdf

This book (Irish Wolfhounds) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Irish Wolfhound by Alice Kane Pdf

The tallest dog in the world, the Irish Wolfhound is the true "gentle giant" of the dog world, clad in its characteristic rough coat and standing no less than 31 inches at the shoulder. The breed's devotion to its family, coupled with its bravery and courage, are the stuff of legends, many of which are retold in this Comprehensive Owner's Guide. In the chapter on the breed's history, author Alice Kane explores the Irish Wolfhound's fascinating origins in Ireland and beyond; she is joined by breed expert Gretchen Bernardi, who has provided an excellent and concise history of the Wolfhound in the United States. As Kane discusses in the chapter on the breed's characteristics, the Irish Wolfhound is among the friendliest of all dogs, though he requires a special owner who is able to give him the training, care, and accommodations he needs. As a companion for an active family with children, a more reliable and kinder dog cannot be found.New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

In Search of the Irish Wolfhound by Owen Dickey Pdf

The first of its kind, In Search of the Irish Wolfhound, takes a real in-depth look into the history and origins of the Irish wolfhound. Owen Dickey details his research into the origins of one of his favourite dog breeds and recounts stories of its loyalty, courage, and devotion. He answers the common questions and misconceptions related to the breed and whether the modern dog is the original breed revived or a more modern creation. The book features chapters which focus on the myths and legends and a description of the most important personages associated with the wolfdog from the third century to the nineteenth. Owen furthers his research, using only contemporary sources, both literary and artistic, to answer what the Irish wolfdog looked like in the past. Dickey leaves no stone unturned in In Search of the Irish Wolfhound. He takes a closer look into the legendary ancestors of the Irish wolfhound, one of the most famous dog breeds of the Middle Ages, and their equally legendary reputation as guard and hunting dogs.
