Economics and politics of water resources development: Uda Walawe Irrigation Project, Sri Lanka by Molle, Francois, Renwick, M. Pdf

The Uda Walawe Irrigation and Resettlement Project (UWIRP) located in the Southern dry zone of Sri Lanka was initiated in the early 1950s. The original plan for the UWIRP was a highly ambitious social, economic and physical engineering project aimed at creating a modern, profitable agriculture sector. This report examines the history of water resources development and investment decisions for the UWIRP over a period of 50 years and uncovers underlying processes that shaped the evolution of the project and highlights the limitation of viewing development as a mere set of technical and social engineering endeavors.

More Crop Per Drop by Meredith Giordano,Frank R. Rijsberman,R. Maria Saleth Pdf

This volume is an analytical summary and a critical synthesis of research at the International Water Management Institute over the past decade under its evolving research paradigm known popularly as 'more crop per drop'. The research synthesized here covers the full range of issues falling in the larger canvas of water-food-health-environment interface. Besides its immediate role in sharing knowledge with the research, donor, and policy communities, this volume also has a larger purpose of promoting a new way of looking at the water issues within the broader development context of food, livelihood, health and environmental challenges. More crop per drop: Revisiting a research paradigm contrasts the acquired wisdom and fresh thinking on some of the most challenging water issues of our times. It describes new tools, approaches, and methodologies and also illustrates them with practical application both from a global perspective and within the local and regional contexts of Asia and Africa. Since this volume brings together all major research works of IWMI, including an almost exhaustive list of citations, in one single set of pages, it is very valuable not only as a reference material for researchers and students but also as a policy tool for decision-makers and development agencies.

Ecology and Biogeography in Sri Lanka by C.H. Fernando Pdf

When the late Professor Joachim Illies suggested in 1980 that I edit a volume of the Monographiae Biologicae on Sri Lanka, I was glad to accept the challenge. Although I had spent only six years of my research and teaching career in Sri Lanka, I had made personal contact or corresponded with many scientists who had worked in, still work in, or who have studied material from Sri Lanka. The present domicile of the authors of the chapters in this volume shows the wide geographic spread of interest in Sri Lanka, and indicates also the dispersion of Sri Lankan scientists like myself. Sri Lanka has had a relatively long history of indigenous scientific research in the natural sciences. From the early work of Kelaart (1852, Prodromous Fauna Zeylanicae, Ceylon Govt. Press, 250 pp.) to the present time, there has been a more or less sustained research effort in the natural sciences. The Colombo Museum, which celebrated its centenary only a few years ago, and the world famous Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, served as repositories and bases for continued research on the fauna and flora. There are a number of land marks in these studies.

Managing Irrigation by Norman Uphoff,Priti Ramamurthy,Roy Steiner Pdf

Irrigation continues to be a vital component of human existence. The study of irrigation bureaucracy, however, is a new field for study. Defining and shaping this area of inquiry, Managing Irrigation offers analytical and prescriptive conclusions to improve the performance of bureaucracies responsible for irrigation management in developing countries. Uphoff and his colleagues envision irrigation as both a socio-technical and organizational-managerial enterprise; that considering cultural and organizational factors are as important as technological ones. Managing Irrigation develops a typology of irrigation systems and looks at differences in structures; considers objectives of irrigation management; and suggests alternatives, principles, and past experience to make irrigation agencies more effective. As such, policymakers, administrators, students, and scholars in development studies, Third World studies, political science, and sociology will find this volume most useful. "This book makes no claims to be definitive or complete: It emphasizes pragmatic approaches to problems which will be shaped by the physical, political and social characteristics of each specific irrigation scheme. This modest and sympathetic approach seems likely to reach and to influence its intended audience, and the authors are to be warmly congratulated." --Journal of Peasant Studies "It emphasizes pragmatic approaches to problems which will be shaped by the physical, political, and social characteristics of each specific irrigation scheme. Research and innovation in the life sciences is driving rapid growth in agriculture, biomedical science, information science and computing, energy, and other sectors of the U.S. economy. This economic activity, conceptually referred to as the bioeconomy, presents many opportunities to create jobs, improve the quality of life, and continue to drive economic growth. While the United States has been a leader in advancements in the biological sciences, other countries are also actively investing in and expanding their capabilities in this area. Maintaining competitiveness in the bioeconomy is key to maintaining the economic health and security of the United States and other nations. Safeguarding the Bioeconomy evaluates preexisting and potential approaches for assessing the value of the bioeconomy and identifies intangible assets not sufficiently captured or that are missing from U.S. assessments. This study considers strategies for safeguarding and sustaining the economic activity driven by research and innovation in the life sciences. It also presents ideas for horizon scanning mechanisms to identify new technologies, markets, and data sources that have the potential to drive future development of the bioeconomy.
