Power Up Your Read-Alouds by Andrea Paganelli Pdf

Capture the hearts, minds, and attention of your digital-age listeners using read-aloud experiences that engage technology. "I wish my learners would be as excited about reading as they are about technology" is a lament frequently sung by those who seek to support reading development. There is no debate that reading is fundamental and that reading aloud strongly supports lifelong reading engagement. Technology, however, is ubiquitous in our society, and engagement with it is essential for our success. Reading and technology are therefore in competition for learners' attention, but by combining reading and technology through use of read-aloud, facilitators can create engaging digital read-aloud programs to enhance the learning experience. Digital read-aloud can be used with multiple age groups, in a variety of settings, and with differing degrees of expense and technology complexity. Understanding that these myriad options can be overwhelming, however, Andrea Paganelli offers detailed information on the background, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability of technology-infused read-aloud for reading support persons, school librarians, public librarians, instructional librarians, teachers, and professors. Her ideas span multiple ages and subjects and include practical examples designed to engage both educators and readers.

Elmo Williams by Elmo Williams Pdf

"Fate has thrown me some interesting curves," says Elmo Williams, the farm boy turned film editor, director and producer. As a young boy, he traveled with his family in a covered wagon to a new life in a New Mexico homestead. After struggling to help raise his siblings, in 1932 as a young teen he began working for film editor Merrill White. As White's gopher, he spent his spare time watching and learning the art of film editing. Within three years he was a partner in an editing company with White in London. In subsequent years his career bloomed to include producing, editing and directing. In 1954 he was awarded an Academy Award for film editing for High Noon. He also worked for Walt Disney, Darryl F. Zanuck Productions, 20th Century-Fox and others. His works include the films The Tall Texan, The Longest Day, Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Poseidon Adventure, Zorba The Greek, and Caravans, and the TV series Hee Haw, Explore, Soggy Bottom U.S.A. and Man, Woman and Child. This memoir traces Williams's life from his early childhood to his views on life at age 93. It is a story of hard work rewarded with a satisfying life, and of one man's efforts to communicate with others in the universal language of film--and of laughter. "I intend to keep laughing," he says, "a habit I adopted as a child. If I can keep it up, I'll still be around to celebrate my centennial."

The Opioid Epidemic in the United States by Kant B. Patel,Mark E. Rushefsky Pdf

The current opioid epidemic in the United States began in the mid-1990s with the introduction of a new drug, OxyContin, viewed as a safer and more effective opiate for chronic pain management. By 2017, the opioid epidemic had become a full-blown crisis as over two million Americans had become dependent on and abused prescription pain pills and street drugs. This book examines the origins, development, and rise of the opioid epidemic in the United States from the perspective of the public policy process. The authors, political scientists Kant Patel and Mark Rushefsky, discuss institutional features of the American political system that impact the making of public policy, arguing that the fragmentation of that system hinders the ability to coherently address policy problems, taking the opioid epidemic as an example. The book begins with a brief historical examination of the history of the problem of opioid addiction and crises in the United States and public policy responses to past crises, but the main focus is on the current national public health emergency. The book analyzes the following: The origins of the current crisis Indicators and warning signs pointing to the emergence of a significant public problem Factors that contributed to the opioid crisis Why the crisis emerged in the United States and not in other Western countries The nature and scope of the opioid crisis, including socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and the human, social, and economic costs Presidential administrations’ public response, and nonresponse, to the opioid crisis Parallels between the role played by opioid manufacturers and tobacco/cigarette manufacturers in creating the problem of addiction, resulting in high mortality rates, and the public policy response to both This book explores the national policy response to the opioid crisis, as well as state and local government responses and separation of powers, including how the three branches of government deal with the opioid problem. The authors conclude with a discussion of how accurate problem definition, problem diagnosis, and appropriate and timely responses could have produced a more appropriate and robust policy response—policy process tools that will be essential in fighting both the current crisis and the next one. The Opioid Epidemic in the United States is essential reading for policy analysis courses in political science, health, and social work programs, as well as for United States policymakers at the local, state, and national levels.
