A Story of Shalom by Philip A. Cunningham Pdf

Stimulus Books are volumes co-sponsored by the Stimulus Foundation and Paulist Press that deal with topics of vital interest to the Jewish-Christian dialogue. This latest Stimulus Book, A Story of Shalom is, in the words of the author, an "experiment". In it he takes the dawn of the millennium as an opportunity to retell the Christian story (the origins of the church, its purposes, its doings over the centuries and its goals for the future) in a way that envisions a positive relationship between the Christian and Jewish peoples. He rejects the "old" story of creation as "supersessionist", (believing that Christianity has replaced Judaism as God's chosen people). And he tells the Christian story in a way that promotes "Shalom" by affirming Judaism's covenant with God and the validity of Jewish self-understanding.

Shalom by Perry Yoder Pdf

The biblical challenge of shalom is one which ought to draw all Christians together in a common struggle so that God's will might be done and God's kingdom might come on earth as it is in heaven. People, as well as structures, need to be transformed. People who are caught in oppressive structures need to be liberated from the values and perspectives inculcated by these structures. The shalom maker, as a result, is involved in a mission of conversion--converting people to a new understanding and way of life. This conversion, based on God's love for them in Jesus, frees them from old patterns of thought. If we struggle for shalom, we shall suffer because we are actively confronting and resisting the structures of oppression and working for the liberation of powerless and oppressed people. Shalom love is not love at a distance, not love in the abstract, not love in the rocking chair--it is the love of confrontation, of strike, of protest, and of disobedience to the structures of violence. Shalom love is suffering love because it is militant love struggling for human liberation, justice, and shalom, which is God's will for our world.

GRACE and SHALOM by Robert P. Holland Pdf

Grace and peace are in the salutation of all the letters written by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament. Grace and peace summarize the Christian life. Grace delivers us from a life of sin and death and trains us to live a new life of peace--shalom. Dark waters on the cover of GRACE & SHALOM represent the deep referred to in Genesis 1:2. "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." It was amid the deep that God created the heaven and earth separating the waters above the heaven from the water under the earth (Genesis 1:6-8). The Bible begins with creation out of darkness upon the face of the deep in Genesis 1:1 and ends with a new heaven and earth and no more sea in Revelation 21:1. From Genesis to Revelation, there is a continual battle of darkness trying to put out the light. And from Genesis through Revelation, we read about the Holy Spirit giving grace and shalom to save people from darkness. GRACE & SHALOM expounds upon grace and shalom available to those who answer God's call to come out of darkness into the marvelous light of Jesus Christ. And it is through grace and shalom that they are trained to walk in the light until they are in the new Jerusalem where the Lamb is the light and there is no more darkness (Revelation 21:23). Romans 5:1-5 is an outline of the Christian life from the time we come out of darkness until we are living on the new earth where there is no more darkness. It is also the outline of GRACE & SHALOM. Justification (vs. 1) begins when we accept God's grace, Jesus Christ, (John 3:16) by faith. Justification is completed when we are delivered by grace out of darkness into the light of the world, Jesus Christ (John 8:12). Peace (shalom) with God (vs. 1) is fellowship with Jesus Christ the light of the world. Rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God (vs.2) is living the first fruits of the light of the coming kingdom of God, righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Not only do those who have peace with God rejoice in the hope of the glory of God but also in tribulation (vs.3). Rejoicing in tribulation is living a life of light in darkness empowered by the love of God poured into the heart of those who are justified by faith in Jesus Christ (vs. 5). Romans 5:1-5 explains the transformation of those who receive God's love in John 3:16 to save them out of the world and being given the same love of God (Romans 5:5) to love the same world they came out of as God loves it. Jesus called the transformation "born again" (John 3:3, 5) and "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14).In the Book of Acts, we read about the many attempts of darkness trying to overcome the Apostle Paul. God's grace and shalom were enough for him (2 Corinthians 12:9), and he wrote. "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:35, 37-39 NKJV).

Shalom Sistas by Osheta Moore Pdf

Like a lot of women, blogger Osheta Moore loved the idea of shalom: God’s dream for a world that is whole, vibrant, and flourishing. But honestly: who's got the time? So one night she whispered a dangerous prayer: God, show me the things that make for peace… In Shalom Sistas, Moore shares what she learned when she challenged herself to study peace in the Bible for forty days. Taking readers through the twelve points of the Shalom Sistas’ Manifesto, Moore experiments with practices of everyday peacemaking and invites readers to do the same. From dropping “love bombs” on a family vacation, to talking to the coach who called her son the n-word, to spreading shalom with a Swiffer, Moore offers bold steps for crossing lines between black and white, suburban and urban, rich and poor. What if a bunch of Jesus-following women catch a vision of a vibrant, whole, flourishing world? What happens when Shalom Sistas unite? Free downloadable study guide available here.

The Very Good Gospel by Lisa Sharon Harper Pdf

God once declared everything in the world “very good.” Can you imagine it? A Vision of Hope for a Broken World Shalom is what God declared. Shalom is what the Kingdom of God looks like. Shalom is when all people have enough. It’s when families are healed. It’s when churches, schools, and public policies protect human dignity. Shalom is when the image of God is recognized in every single human. Shalom is our calling as followers of Jesus’s gospel. It is the vision God set forth in the Garden and the restoration God desires for every relationship. What can we do to bring shalom to our nations, our communities, and our souls? Through a careful exploration of biblical text, particularly the first three chapters of Genesis, Lisa Sharon Harper shows us what “very good” can look like today, even after the Fall. Because despite our anxious minds, despite division and threats of violence, God’s vision remains: Wholeness for a hurting world. Peace for a fearful soul. Shalom.

The Difficult Words of Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine Pdf

As well as telling parables and stories, giving teachings on how to discern questions of ethics and human nature, and offering beatitudes for comfort and encouragement, Jesus also spoke words and flung insults that followers then and now have found difficult, to say the least. He instructs disciples to hate members of their own families (Luke 14:26), warns that unending fire awaits some people, says body parts should be cut off if they offend. He calls a foreign woman a ‘dog’, the Jews ‘offspring of vipers’ and his closest disciple ‘Satan’. Preachers often gloss over these or avoid them altogether as they are still so shocking. In The Difficult Words of Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine sheds vital light on understanding these by exploring how these sayings sounded to those who first heard them. She reveals Jewish modes of expression, humour and the long tradition of Jewish insults and what they mean, and how we might interpret these sayings today within a gospel of love and reconciliation.

In this extraordinarily liberating book Andrew Francis explores seven different, once-marginalized movements in their search for shalom in the life, ministry and example of Jesus. What would it look like to create a manifesto for Jesus-shaped living? What does it mean to say that the Spirit of the Lord is forming shalom through his church?

The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments by Scott Weeman Pdf

Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.
