Finding a Spiritual Home by Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, PhD Pdf

The Jewish community has lost some of the most sensitive spiritual souls of this generation. They are Jews who were looking for God and found spiritual homes outside of Judaism. Their journeys traversed the Jewish community, but nothing there beckoned them. The creation of synagogue-communities in which the voices of seekers can be heard and their questions can be asked will challenge many loyalist Jews. It will upset and enrage them. But it would also enrich them. —from Chapter 18 In this fresh look at the spiritual possibilities of American Jewish life, Rabbi Sidney Schwarz presents the framework for a new synagogue model—the synagogue community—and its promise to transform our understanding of the synagogue and its potential for modern Judaism. Schwarz profiles four innovative synagogues—one from each of the major movements of Judaism—that have had extraordinary success with their approach to congregational life and presents practical ways to replicate their success. Includes a discussion guide for study groups and book clubs as well as a new afterword by the author describing developments in synagogue change projects since the book was first published.

Jewish Services in Synagogue and Home (Classic Reprint) by Lewis N. Dembitz Pdf

Excerpt from Jewish Services in Synagogue and Home The volume has been much swelled by the necessity of laying before my readers the chief parts of our liturgy and samples of the later and less, essential parts in a faithful English translation, as the greater number of those whom this book will reach are not acquainted with the old Prayer Book, that peculiar treasure of Israel, nor even possessed of a copy, otherwise I might, like German authors on the subject, have referred to parts of the prayers by name with out embodying them in the text. Longer passages from the Bible, such as whole Psalms, are not copied, but simply cited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sabbath and Synagogue by Heather A. McKay Pdf

Sabbath worship as a communal event does not feature in the Hebrew Bible. In the context of the first century CE, according to Philo and Josephus, the sabbath gatherings took place only for the purpose of studying the law, and not for the liturgical recital of psalms or prayer. Classical authors depict Jews spending the sabbath at home. Jewish inscriptions provide no evidence of sabbath-worship in prayer-houses (proseuchai), while the Mishnah prescribes no special communal sabbath activities. The usual picture of Jews going on the sabbath to the synagogue to worship thus appears to be without foundation. It is even doubtful that there were synagogue buildings, for "synagogue" normally meant "community." The conclusion of this study, that there is no evidence that the sabbath was a day of communal Jewish worship before 200 CE, has far-reaching consequences for our understanding of early Jewish-Christian relationships.
