Joanna Russ: Novels & Stories (LOA #373) by Joanna Russ Pdf

Rediscover one of America’s best SF writers in a definitive hardcover edition gathering all her finest work together for the first time A LGBTQIA+ pioneer joins the Library of America series An incandescent stylist with a dark sense of humor and a provocative feminist edge, Joanna Russ upended every genre in which she worked. The essential novels and stories gathered in this definitive Library of America edition make a case for Russ not only as an astonishing writer of speculative fiction, but, in the words of Samuel Delany, “one of the finest––and most necessary––writers of American fiction” period. Here is her now-classic novel The Female Man (1975), in which four remarkable women––Jeannine, Janet, Joanna, and Jael––traverse alternate histories and parallel worlds (including the brilliantly imagined all-female utopia, Whileaway) in a multi-voiced, multidimensional voyage that continues to alter readers’ sense of gender and reality. We Who Are About To … (1977), recounting the fate of a misfit band of space-tourists stranded on an alien world, challenges “golden age” expectations about civilization, in what becomes an allegorical thriller. In On Strike Against God (1980), her incisive, darkly comic, and ultimately joyous final novel, Russ returns to Earth to explore LGBTQIA+ and feminist themes and the unfamiliar territory of “coming out” and lesbian romance. Russ’s “Complete Alyx Stories”––which feature her inimitably sly, resilient, and stone-cold heroine Alyx, who is plucked from a life of petty crime in ancient Phoenicia to serve as adventurer-for-hire for the Trans-Temporal Authority, and which reinvent the sword and sorcery genre for a postmodern era––are presented in their entirety here for the first time, and newly restored to print. Also included are her unforgettable tales “When It Changed” and “Souls,” the former a 1973 Nebula Award winner and the latter the recipient of the 1983 Hugo and Locus Awards.

Socrates Among the Corybantes by Carl A Levenson Pdf

In Plato's dialogues, we find many references to Corybantic rites-rites of initiation performed in honor of the goddess Rhea. But in the dialogue titled Euthydemus, there is more than a mere reference to the rites to be found. Within the context of Socratic dialectic, the ancient rites of the Corybantes are acted out-although veiled and distorted. This is what Carl Levenson argues in his book. Since the Corybantic rites are of the Dionysian/Eleusinian type, Plato gives us a glimpse of the reality of Dionysian ecstasy. This interesting knowledge of these rites has usually been lost in the academic assertion that the Euthydemus is just a satire on philosophic arguing, and hence it has been consigned to a marginal place in Plato's canon. But here Plato is rejecting his abstract theories in favor of intimacy with the reality of the world, of matter and being rather than form. Levenson states that complete immersion in the material substrate of the world is what Plato discovers at the heart of Dionysian ecstasy, and the aim of ecstasy. Plato says it is to purify the soul of ancient guilt. With a new Afterword by the author.

Knight Moves by K J Knight Pdf

Knight Moves: The K J Knight Story recounts the fascinating tale of a miscreant young rock drummer growing up in the Motor City during the 1960s and 70s—a dynamic and defining period in rock and roll history. This is also the story of a teenage boy whose world is ripped apart and whose destiny is sealed through his father’s infidelity and the resulting dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As his home life crumbles, young K J immerses himself in his music. And against the backdrop of the madness of the music industry, this aspiring musician nomadically roams from one band to the next in search of a place in the rock-and-roll world. In this no-holds-barred account, author K J Knight describes his life and career, detailing his relentless acts of juvenile delinquency and his impact on the capricious nature of the music scene from Detroit to LA and back with many points in between. This candid, behind-the-scenes memoir could only have been written by a music insider, overflowing as it is with insight into America’s burgeoning rock culture. Knight chronicles his epic highs and shattering lows playing in countless bands. Eventually landing an envious gig with The Amboy Dukes and infamous guitar great Ted Nugent, K J gets a taste of the mythical life of a rock star, including rubbing shoulders with Motor City icons Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop. Knight’s passion for both his music and his family provide the emotional core for this searing autobiography, Knight Moves: The K J Knight Story.

Black Female Vampires in African American Women’s Novels, 1977–2011 by Kendra R. Parker Pdf

This book critically situates the figure of the black female vampire in several fields of study including literary studies, cultural studies, gender studies, and critical race studies. Black female vampires continue to appear as important literary devices and revealing indicators of cultural attitudes and trends about African American women’s bodies. This book examines five novels written by four African American women writers to investigate what it means to represent African American womanhood through the lens of vampirism, interrogate how these representations connect to or stem from historical representations of African American women, and explore how representations of black female vampires in African American women’s literature simultaneously negate, reinforce, or dismantle stereotypes of African American women.
