John Wesley and the American Frontier by John Beeson Pdf

This book seeks to understand John Wesley's theology, which when put into practice, gave birth to a great evangelical revival in the English-speaking world of the eighteenth century. On the American Frontier in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, Wesley's theology underwent some significant changes. These changes were in key areas of Wesley's theology: the doctrines of Grace, Christian perfection, and his theology of worship and sacraments. There have always been those who seek church renewal through a return of the 'ole time religion' (the religion of the frontier). This book suggests that we in the twenty-first century need to go back further than the American frontier in our search for church renewal, back to Wesley's theology, unfiltered through the frontier. Dr. Beeson is retired after forty-four years as a United Methodist pastor and District Superintendent in the Western New York Conference. In retirement he has had time to write this book, which has been in the back of his mind for years. He has been a Chaplin in the Army Reserve with the final rank of captain, executive secretary of the Genesee County Council of Churches, mayor of the village of Barker, N.Y. and theology professor in Burundi, Africa. He has written two other books: They Gathered at the Cross 1967 and Deep Pools 1978; a study guide for laity, Theology 101 and a course of study for pastors in Burundi. Dr. Beeson and his wife, Eva, have three grown children and several grandchildren all of whom they are very proud.

Becoming Cosmopolitan by William L. Sachs,Wanjiru M. Gitau Pdf

The legacy of Christian mission seems beyond dispute. Western churches carried imperialist and racist assumptions as they evangelized and encouraged the formation of indigenous churches. Amid those realities a different sensibility took root. As the history of Virginia Theological Seminary illustrates, missionaries who were alumni adapted to contextual circumstances in ways that challenged Western presumptions. Mission encouraged cosmopolitan ties featuring mutuality and reciprocity. The path to such relations was not straight nor always readily taken. Yet, over the seminary’s two-hundred-year history, the cosmopolitan direction has become evident on several continents. As missionaries came home, and leaders and students from abroad visited the seminary, the ideal of cosmopolitan relations spread. It became evident as mission churches took indigenous form and control. It was reinforced as Western churches explored the dimensions of social justice. American theological education affirmed the reality of diversity and recast its pedagogies in appreciative ways. This book traces an epic shift in mission and theological education measured by the rise of cosmopolitanism in the life of Virginia Theological Seminary.

The Origins of American Religious Nationalism by Sam Haselby Pdf

Sam Haselby offers a new and persuasive account of the role of religion in the formation of American nationality, showing how a contest within Protestantism reshaped American political culture and led to the creation of an enduring religious nationalism. Following U.S. independence, the new republic faced vital challenges, including a vast and unique continental colonization project undertaken without, in the centuries-old European senses of the terms, either "a church" or "a state." Amid this crisis, two distinct Protestant movements arose: a popular and rambunctious frontier revivalism; and a nationalist, corporate missionary movement dominated by Northeastern elites. The former heralded the birth of popular American Protestantism, while the latter marked the advent of systematic Protestant missionary activity in the West. The explosive economic and territorial growth in the early American republic, and the complexity of its political life, gave both movements opportunities for innovation and influence. This book explores the competition between them in relation to major contemporary developments-political democratization, large-scale immigration and unruly migration, fears of political disintegration, the rise of American capitalism and American slavery, and the need to nationalize the frontier. Haselby traces these developments from before the American Revolution to the rise of Andrew Jackson. His approach illuminates important changes in American history, including the decline of religious distinctions and the rise of racial ones, how and why "Indian removal" happened when it did, and with Andrew Jackson, the appearance of the first full-blown expression of American religious nationalism.

The Greatest Western Writer Of The 21st Century William Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone are the acclaimed masters of the American frontier and national bestsellers. Now, they take on the deadliest and most feared outlaw to ever walk the Old West--John Wesley Hardin. First he became a killer. Then he became a legend. He was 15 when he killed his first man. Before his murderous ways ended, Hardin killed 42 men in cold blood--one, the legend goes, because he snored too loudly. From then on John Wesley Hardin stayed true to his calling, killing man after man after man, spending most of his life being pursued by both local lawmen and federal troops. Hardin lived a fever dream of lightning fast draws and flying lead. By the age of seventeen, Hardin earned a deadly reputation for cold-blooded killing that drew traitors, backstabbers and wanna-be gunslingers--all for a chance to gun down the man who had turned killing into an all-American legend. . .

The Historic Church by Archpriest John W. Morris Pdf

The Historic Church is a survey of Christian history written for Orthodox Christians by an Eastern Orthodox scholar. Although one can find many excellent studies of Christian history in the United States, none of them considers the development of Christianity from an Eastern Orthodox point of view. The work begins by laying a foundation for the study of Christian history by discussing the beliefs and practices of the ancient Church, during the age of the Fathers and the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The author then discusses the development of Roman Catholicism and the theological and cultural reasons for the split between Rome and Orthodoxy, and relations between East and West following the schism. He concludes his work with a discussion the origins and historical development of every major Protestant group and tells how they differ from Orthodoxy.
