For Joshua by Richard Wagamese Pdf

Celebrated Ojibway author Richard Wagamese shares the traditions and teachings of his people, entwining them with an account of his own life-long struggle for self-knowledge and self-respect. Richard Wagamese stares the modern world in the eye and takes careful note of its snares and perils. He sees people coveting without knowing why, people looking for roots without understanding what might constitute rootedness, people looking for acceptance without offering reciprocal respect, and people longing for love without knowing how to offer it. And underneath all lurks the seductive oblivion of substance abuse. These are the pitfalls of his own life, dangers he hopes his estranged son, Joshua, will be able to navigate with the guidance afforded by this heartfelt memoir. Richard Wagamese has no easy answers. His road to self-knowledge has been long and treacherous - and it is in part this series of trials that has furnished him if not with a complete set of answers then at least a profound understanding of the questions. Again and again Wagamese brings universal problems into astonishingly sharp focus by sharing the special wisdom of Canada's First Nations, while reminding us that we are not so different after all.

The Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Joshua by Brent A. Pitts Pdf

The Anglo-Norman Bible's Joshua includes tales of spies, giants, the prostitute Rahab, the punishment of Achan, oracles, and Joshua's brilliant military victories. Joshua stops the sun. The first half of the book relates Joshua's stunning conquests in Canaan. The second half, the apportionment of the land among the tribes, detailed geographical surveys of territorial boundaries, and the death of Joshua. Skilful, well-paced story telling is a feature of the ANB's Joshua. To the accounts of Rahab and Achan we may add the chronicle of Joshua's successful, crushing campaign in the wake of the destruction of Makkedah. In rapid succession, and in an annalistic style involving staccato repetition of key phrases, the narrator relates the destruction of Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir. The text of the ANB's Joshua is extant in British Library Royal 1 C III (base manuscript, L) and Paris, Bibliotheque nationale de France, MS francais 1 (P), both c. 1350 and both the Bibles of kings. L belonged at some point in the fifteenth century to Reading's Benedictine abbey, entering the royal library in 1530. Characteristic of L is its occasional insertion of short glosses in English or Latin to clarify or correct the Anglo-Norman text. An illustrated text, P was prepared by an English workshop for the fourth baron de Welles, John, and his wife, Maud, daughter of William, Lord Ros. This is clearly the Bible of a wealthy and well-connected English family. After the Welles family, the manuscript belonged to Louis de Bruges (1492), then to King Louis XII of France.

Divine Presence amid Violence by Walter Brueggemann Pdf

To pursue the matter of revelation in context, I will address an exceedingly difficult text in the Old Testament, Joshua 11. The reason for taking up this text is to deal with the often asked and troublesome question: What shall we do with all the violence and bloody war that is done in the Old Testament in the name of Yahweh? The question reflects a sense that these texts of violence are at least an embarrassment, are morally repulsive, and are theologically problematic in the Bible, not because they are violent, but because this is violence either in the name of or at the hand of Yahweh. -from chapter 2

Joshua by J. Gordon McConville,Stephen Nantlais Williams Pdf

"In this volume Gordon McConville and Stephen Williams interpret the book of Joshua in relation to Christian theology, providing exegetical commentary and reflection on an often-troubling book that nonetheless plays a key role in the biblical drama of salvation. McConville and Williams address significant theological themes in Joshua, such as land, covenant, law, miracle, judgment (including the problem of genocide), and idolatry. They posit that the theological topics engaged in Joshua are not limited to the horizons of the author and first readers of the book, but that this ancient text is part of a much larger testimony that concerns readers yet today." ""What a marvelous book! Many commentaries on Joshua are disappointing and dispiriting; after using them, you wonder what the point was. This one helps you understand the book, helps you see the point, and sets you thinking energetically and constructively on the theological issues it raises."---John Goldingay, Fuller Theological Seminary" ""In the light of Qoheleth's tired comment---'Of making many books there is no end'---one can be forgiven for asking whether we need yet another English commentary on the book of Joshua. Having had opportunity to dive into this new one coauthored by Old Testament scholar Gordon McConville and systematic theologian Stephen Williams, I can only respond with another of Qoheleth's sayings: Two are better than one, for they have a good return for their labor.' This collaborative effort in theological exegesis is first-rate both as exegesis and as theological interpretation, brilliantly demonstrating the organic and necessary link between the two."---V. Philips Long, Regent College, Vancouver"--BOOK JACKET.

Being Joshua by Archie Murray Pdf

Have you ever wanted to be stronger, more vibrant, as a believer? Have you ever felt the church is weak when it should be strong? Have you ever felt that rampant evil should be shut down? Do you believe change is possible in the world, in the church… in you?! Joshua experienced a bad start in life—forty years in slavery. He wandered a desert for another forty years. Yet it was in and from these experiences that he discovered the believer’s strength. He escaped slavery and went on to shut evil down and conquer the Promised Land. If we want to conquer the world for God… we must allow God first to conquer us. Being Joshua shows how God uses the circumstances of life to change us into who He wants us to be. In life’s slavery and wanderings, Joshua teaches us how to synapse with God’s Spirit. Joshua teaches us that God is doing something—we are a part of it, but it is bigger than us. Joshua teaches us how to view life within the purposes of God and gain victory over our circumstances and ultimately ourselves. Joshua shows us that the weakest and the strongest believers need to encourage themselves and be strong. He reminds us, pertinent to our times, that we must also encourage each other. Joshua learned this from the Old Testament Scriptures taught in a godly family life, a community of believers, and a personal walk of faith in God. His education was by words and examples in real daily life. This book is written from a pastoral and practical perspective.

Just Joshua by Jan Michael Pdf

So what if his father was the only butcher in a village of fishermen, a loner who preferred to spend his evenings carving wood? Is it true what everyone is saying -- that Joshua's father is a 'mountain man', one of the people feared and mistrusted by the villagers? When Joshua's life takes an surprising turn, he discovers that being different does matter. Maybe it's not enough to be just Joshua?
