The Joshua Tree by Gloria Hine Gossard Pdf
For centuries, the Joshua Tree has withstood the rigors of the Mojave Desert yet has remained shrouded in mystery, controversies & contradictions. The challenging question "What good is a Joshua tree?" prompted writer/journalist Gloria Hine Gossard, a long-time resident of California's High Desert, to embark upon a three-year research project on the Joshua tree. Her search took her to members of the scientific communities, botanical & agricultural experts, as well as families of early settlers with their, as well as her own, personal experiences with this unique desert plant. Now, for the first time in one book, fact is separated from fiction, including the pros & cons of transplanting, & whether the plant is a drought resister or a water conversationist. The author also addresses the controversial & contradictory issues raised by those who consider the Joshua tree a barrier to large-scale development of the High Desert & residents who want to see them saved as an endangered species of desert plant life. Issues covered include how old is old? Where & how do they grow, & are they a vital part of the desert eco-system? Professionals & laymen alike have proclaimed this to be "the definitive book on Joshua trees. Interesting, informative & easy to read." ISBN: 0-9633264-0-6, $9.95 plus s/h. Jarod and the Mystery of the Joshua Trees by Janice J. Beaty Pdf
In this first novel of the National Park Adventure Series, sixteen-year-old Darrell Freeman narrates the story of his ten-year-old brother Jarod and their strange camping experiences among the weird trees and peculiar critters of Joshua Tree National Park in the California desert. While their Mom, a book illustrator, pursues her art, the boys take off in their vintage orange VW camper bus to see the park. Jarod, an indigo child with psychic abilities, is able to call up the native critters and talk with the Joshua Trees and granite boulders that are scattered everywhere. Thus the brothers learn that the area is not only ancient but sacred, and that the trees and boulders need help—their help. The park lies between two Earth faults and the Earth is beginning to rumble. The brothers start their quest at once to find the special tree and particular boulder that will tell them what to do. Meanwhile, a lady and man in a black SUV start their own quest to find the brothers and steal the strange buzzing rock Jarod found the first day. What causes the rock to buzz? No one knows. Before the tale is done the SUV people steal the rock, but the boys recover it with the help of a mysterious Indian shaman. Then they must find the “proper resting place” to bury the rock to stabilize the park. Do they succeed?

Preserving the Desert by Lary M. Dilsaver Pdf
National parks are different from other federal lands in the United States. Beginning in 1872 with the establishment of Yellowstone, they were largely set aside to preserve for future generations the most spectacular and inspirational features of the country, seeking the best representative examples of major ecosystems such as Yosemite, geologic forms such as the Grand Canyon, archaeological sites such as Mesa Verde, and scenes of human events such as Gettysburg. But one type of habitat--the desert--fell short of that goal in American eyes until travel writers and the Automobile Age began to change that perception. As the Park Service began to explore the better-known Mojave and Colorado deserts of southern California during the 1920s for a possible desert park, many agency leaders still carried the same negative image of arid lands shared by many Americans--that they are hostile and largely useless. But one wealthy woman--Minerva Hamilton Hoyt, from Pasadena--came forward, believing in the value of the desert, and convinced President Franklin D. Roosevelt to establish a national monument that would protect the unique and iconic Joshua trees and other desert flora and fauna. Thus was Joshua Tree National Monument officially established in 1936, with the area later expanded in 1994 when it became Joshua Tree National Park. Since 1936, the National Park Service and a growing cadre of environmentalists and recreationalists have fought to block ongoing proposals from miners, ranchers, private landowners, and real estate developers who historically have refused to accept the idea that any desert is suitable for anything other than their consumptive activities. To their dismay, Joshua Tree National Park, even with its often-conflicting land uses, is more popular today than ever, serving more than one million visitors per year who find the desert to be a place worthy of respect and preservation.
