Journal of Critical Studies in Language and Literature (JCSLL) is a bimonthly double-blind peer-reviewed "Premier" open access journal that represents an interdisciplinary and critical forum for analysing and discussing the various dimensions in the interplay between language, literature, and translation. It locates at the intersection of disciplines including linguistics, discourse studies, stylistic analysis, linguistic analysis of literature, comparative literature, literary criticism, translation studies, literary translation and related areas. It focuses mainly on the empirically and critically founded research on the role of language, literature, and translation in all social processes and dynamics. Articles submitted to JCSLL should bring together critical theories and concepts and in-depth, empirical, language- and literary-oriented analysis. They have to be problem-oriented and rely on well-informed contemporary as well as historical contextualisation of the analysed texts and contexts. Methodologies can be qualitative, quantitative or mixed, but must in any case be systematic and anchored in relevant linguistic, literary, and translation disciplines.

In the contemporary epoch of globalization and the advent of Industry 4.0, global communication transcends temporal and spatial boundaries, with language assuming a preeminent role therein. The fortification and consolidation of Indonesian's role in this communicative milieu are imperative. Yet, given the intricate nature of the Indonesian populace, the augmentation and fortification of Indonesian's role necessitates sustained endeavors to ensure the preservation of Indonesian cultural identity within the nation's human resources. Diligent initiatives to fortify Indonesian as the lingua franca of scientific discourse in this era of globalization demand concerted engagement from various stakeholders, including the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) within the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at the Islamic University of Malang. The forthcoming Third International Conference on Language, Literature, and Cultural Education (ICON-LLCE) will center its focus on augmenting the role of Indonesian language towards the advancement of scientific inquiry and global civilization. The digital transformation, which has pervaded Indonesian society, has been markedly accelerated by the global pandemic that has gripped the world since early 2020. Communities worldwide have transitioned their activities to virtual realms, necessitating adaptability to the digital milieu across diverse sectors encompassing commerce, industry, governance, and education. This transition is marked by an increasing reliance on the digital domain, internet infrastructure, and intelligent computing systems, including artificial intelligence, which Bill Gates heralds as commensurate in impact to the advents of mobile telephony and the internet ("The Age of AI has Begun," 2023). The digital transformation denotes a comprehensive process wherein organizations integrate digital technology across all facets of operation, thus altering the manner in which value is delivered to Indonesian-speaking constituencies. In the Indonesian context, this entails the fundamental adoption of innovative digital technologies to effect cultural and operational shifts that harmonize with evolving demands, habits, and exigencies of the Indonesian-speaking populace. Significantly, this encompasses an expansive online Indonesian dictionary, the integration of information technology and the internet in the pedagogical sphere of teaching Indonesian Language and Literature, and the infusion of artificial intelligence into the educational process for Indonesian as a Second Language (BIPA). Additionally, the repository of books and reference materials in Indonesian will be transitioned to a cloud-based mode, facilitating universal accessibility. In summation, the Internet of Things (IoT) precipitates a discernible transformation in the modes of access and utilization of the Indonesian language, particularly within the domain of scientific inquiry. From the foregoing elucidation, it is underscored that Indonesian, as the official language of the Indonesian state, assumes a pivotal and strategic role in fortifying the national identity and safeguarding the enduring vitality of the language itself. In light of this, the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) within the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at the University of Islam Malang will convene the third iteration of the International Conference on Language, Literature, and Cultural Education (ICON-LLCE) in September 2023, under the overarching theme of "Augmenting the Role of Indonesian for the Advancement of Science and Global Civilization. This international conference, which has been ongoing since 2015, succeeds the second edition convened in November 2021. Through this imminent iteration of ICON-LLCE, distinguished scholars and academics representing various global locales will convene to engage in thoughtful deliberations pertaining to initiatives aimed at safeguarding and fortifying the enduring pertinence and robustness of the Indonesian language within the ambit of forthcoming intellectual pursuits and the broader global cultural discourse.

The first book-length work of its kind, In Transition: Young Adult Literature and Transgender Representation examines the shift in the young adult book market towards increased representation of transgender characters and authors. Through a comprehensive exploration of historical conventions, genres, character diversity, and ideologies of trans representation, Emily Corbett traces the roots of trans literature from its beginnings in a cisgender-dominated publishing world to the recent rise in trans creators, characters, and implied readers. Corbett describes how trans-ness was initially perceived as an issue to be overcome by cisgender authors and highlights the ways in which the market has changed. Through careful analysis of texts that have until now received little scholarly attention, Corbett weaves together different theoretical approaches and fields of study to provide a map of the textual and cultural histories of this twenty-first-century publishing phenomenon. Focusing on trans authorship, authentic storytelling, and intersectional diversity, this book charts changing public attitudes, the YA book market, and the unique sociocultural moment in which these books are published. Malaysian Chinese (Mahua) literature is marginalized on several fronts. In the international literary space, which privileges the West, Malaysia is considered remote. The institutions of modern Chinese literature favor mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Within Malaysia, only texts in Malay, the national language, are considered national literature by the state. However, Mahua authors have produced creative and thought-provoking works that have won growing critical recognition, showing Malaysia to be a laboratory for imaginative Chinese writing. Highlighting Mahua literature’s distinctive mode of evolution, Cheow Thia Chan demonstrates that authors’ grasp of their marginality in the world-Chinese literary space has been the impetus for—rather than a barrier to—aesthetic inventiveness. He foregrounds the historical links between Malaysia and other Chinese-speaking regions, tracing how Mahua writers engage in the “worlding” of modern Chinese literature by navigating interconnected literary spaces. Focusing on writers including Lin Cantian, Han Suyin, Wang Anyi, and Li Yongping, whose works craft signature literary languages, Chan examines narrative representations of multilingual social realities and authorial reflections on colonial Malaya or independent Malaysia as valid literary terrain. Delineating the inter-Asian “crossings” of Mahua literary production—physical journeys, interactions among social groups, and mindset shifts—from the 1930s to the 2000s, he contends that new perspectives from the periphery are essential to understanding the globalization of modern Chinese literature. While the contributions and passion shown throughout the conference have far surpassed our expectations. As a result, we are overwhelmed with a sense of triumph and enlightenment. It is a great accomplishment for us to present the conference proceedings as the remembrance of the authors and delegates of ICOLLEC 2021 in a permanent record of what was presented. The proceedings are organized into three sections: language, literature, and culture. We collected 35 remarkable manuscripts in the discussion from around 60 papers presented. For the sub-theme of Local Culture in Global Society, Dr. Hippolytus Kewwel, M. Hum., wrote an article entitled: Hermeneutic Dilemma in the Indonesian Interfaith Dialogue Program.
