The Documentary History of the First Federal Elections, 1788-1790, Volume I by Merrill Jensen Pdf

This is the first volume of an ambitious project which, when completed, will offer to the historian of early America the first readily accessible account of the nation's first elections. Volume I documents the first federal elections in South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. This book also covers the Constitution, the Confederation Congress, and federal elections, as well as the Confederation Congress and the First Federal Election Ordinance of September 13th, 1788. Included in the three-volume set are hundreds of documents which together illuminate the critical political events of the time and the men who forged them. The documents are both official ones--legislative journals, debates, and laws relating to the elections--and unofficial ones, including material from letters, diaries, newspapers, broadsides, and other sources. The subjects treated include the providing for the elections by the Confederation Congress; public and private commentary prior to the elections; and summaries of official and unofficial actions for each of the thirteen original states. The editors have provided biographical sketches of the candidates for election and sketches of the political events of the time in introductions, headnotes, and editorial notes, in order to place the documents in their historical context. These documents, most of which have been available to scholars only under the most difficult of circumstances, provided the basis for a more complete understanding of the fundamental political acts required to implement the Constitution after its ratification: the election of Representatives, Senators, Electors, and a President--the men who would give shape and meaning to the government created by the Constitution. Scholars and students of early American history, politics, and law will refer to these volumes frequently, in order to gain a fuller comprehension of the men, the events, and the temper of the times that led to the establishment of our early federal government.

The New Hampshire State Constitution by Susan E. Marshall Pdf

Prepared in 1776, the constitution of New Hampshire is the nations first written state constitution. The 1776 constitution was a brief 15 sentences, but it laid out a form of government dedicated to popular control and limited government powers that have remained a central theme of New Hampshire constitutional law to this day. The detail of the framing of the original state constitution --the first in the nation- provides a context for understanding and appreciating the traditions which has marked the states political and constitutional history, even after 144 amendments and over 200 years. The New Hampshire State Constitution includes the full text of each article of the constitution and an analysis of each articles development. Susan E. Marshall includes a description of amendments to the text and references to cases decided by the New Hampshire Supreme Court. She offers a historical overview of the development and application of the New Hampshire constitution and provides a general constitutional history and an article-by-article commentary, including a discussion of important cases. Also included are a bibliographical essay, table of cases, tables relating to constitutional conventions and amendments, and a general index, offering significant sources for further study. The Moral Veto by Gene Burns Pdf

Why have legislative initiatives occurred on such controversial issues as contraception and abortion at times when activist movements had demobilized and the public seemed indifferent? Why did the South - currently a region where anti-abortion sentiment is stronger than in most of the country - liberalize its abortion laws in the 1960s at a faster pace than any other region? Why have abortion and contraception sometimes been framed as matters of medical practice, and at other times as matters of moral significance? These are some of the questions addressed in The Moral Veto: Framing Contraception, Abortion, and Cultural Pluralism in the United States. Based on archival and sociological research, and speaking to issues in the study of culture, social movements, and legal change, this 2005 book examines what the history of controversies over such morally charged issues tells us about cultural pluralism in the United States.
