Author has succeeded in holding the attention of the readers in Adventures of Jamie Heslop as he takes them on a journey of this sea adventure. The book has turned out to be compelling reading as it is strewn with interesting events beautifully woven. The social injustice caused to part of the human race – Black people – is dealt with in detail. The protagonist’s, Jamie Heslop’s, evolution from a young, loving boy to a potential leader through his audacity has been well narrated. He sympathises with the people suppressed in the society and rebels against the injustice and helps them live a peaceful life. His character is etched on the reader’s mind for his bravery and the way he handles the obstacles encountered on his sea journey. Kate, the female protagonist, has been created as a woman with a perspective. Her love for Jamie Heslop and compassion for the children suffering in the workhouse make her go on this risky journey with him. Her struggle between her love for Heslop and her longing for having a peaceful family in her village is well narrated. That she then chooses to sacrifice her love for the good of all shows her maturity. The intellectual plans conceived by Heslop to fight both the pirates and his uncle are so interesting that the reader cannot put down the book until he finishes it at one go. Their journey to the paradise island and their attempt at establishing a new society on their own with the meagre resources available there are adventurous. The book is a good read.
