For thirteen-year-old Ellsworth, family has always been just him and his dad. That’s all Ellsworth thought he wanted. But then the dreams start. Dreams of houses surrounding a beautiful green square. Suddenly a letter arrives, inviting Ellsworth to a home he doesn’t remember: the Square in Smith Mills, New York. A home with a hidden treasure only a child can uncover—the last treasure of John Matthew Smith, the family’s eccentric patriarch. But there are other things hidden in the Square. Can Ellsworth set these ghosts to rest and uncover the family’s last treasure—or will the secrets of the past haunt him forever?
This comedy parodies every English mystery play ever written: but it has a decidedly American flair. Miss Maple, a dowager with a reputation for "clever" weekend parties, invites a group of detective writers to eerie Ravenswood Manor on Turkey Island, where they are to impersonate their fictional characters. The hostess has arranged all sorts of amusing incidents: a mysterious voice on the radio, a menacing face at the window, a mad killer on the loose. Who is that body in the wine cellar anyway? Why do little figurines keep toppling from the mantle? Then a real murder takes place, and Miss Maple is outraged. She offers an immense reward to the "detective" who can bring the killer to justice. And what an assortment of zany would-be sleuths! When they're not busy tripping over clues, they trip over each other! Laughs collide with thrills, and the climax is a real seat-grabber as the true killer is unmasked, and almost everyone turns out to be someone else! Can be played as a pure farce, or as humorous satire.
The Complete Short Stories of W. Somerset Maugham, Vol. I by W. Somerset (William Somerset) Maugham Pdf
This is the first of three volumes of my collected short stories. In my early youth I wrote a number, but they are so immature that I have preferred not to reprint them. A few are in a book that has long remained out of print, a few others are scattered in various magazines. They are best forgotten. The first of the stories in this collection, Rain, was written in 1920 in Hong Kong, but I had hit upon the idea for it during a journey I took in the South Seas during the winter of 1916. The last of my stories was written in New York in 1945 from a brief note that I found by chance among my papers and which I made as far back as 1901. I do not expect ever to write another.

"A comic satire on the cubicled mind of the organized man. A family on a sightseeing tour are in San Francisco. Father's got it all planned so they can cover the city in a day. He does his sightseeing by telescope from the hotel, but the rest of the family is required to render reports to be shared with the others. But the daughter's a wayward, imaginative girl and spends the day at the ocean, even seeing the Golden Gate Bridge which can't be seen from (the hotel). The unimaginative family members can't see it and declare it doesn't exist."--Publisher's website
