Smart Antennas by T. K. Sarkar,Michael C. Wicks,Magdalena Salazar-Palma,Robert J. Bonneau Pdf

A valuable addition to the Wiley Series in Microwave and Optical Engineering Today's modern wireless mobile communications depend on adaptive "smart" antennas to provide maximum range and clarity. With the recent explosive growth of wireless applications, smart antenna technology has achieved widespread commercial and military applications. The only book available on the topic of adaptive antennas using digital technology, this text reflects the latest developments in smart antenna technology and offers timely information on fundamentals, as well as new adaptive techniques developed by the authors. Coupling electromagnetic aspects of antenna design with signal processing techniques designed to promote accurate and efficient information exchange, the text presents various mechanisms for characterizing signal-path loss associated with signal propagation, particularly for mobile wireless communications systems based on such techniques as joint space-frequency adaptive processing. In clear, accessible language, the authors: * explain the difference between adaptive antennas and adaptive signal processing * Illustrate the procedures for adaptive processing using directive elements in a conformal array * clarify multistage analysis procedure which combines electromagnetic analysis with signal processing * present a survey of the various models for characterizing radio wave propagation in urban and rural environments * describe a method wherein it is possible to identify and eliminate multipath without spatial diversity * optimize the location of base stations in a complex environment The text is an excellent resource for researchers and engineers working in electromagnetics and signal processing who deal with performance improvement of adaptive techniques, as well as those who are concerned with the characterization of propagation channels and applications of airborne phased arrays.

Principles and Applications of RELAX: A Robust and Universal Estimator by Renbiao Wu,Qiongqiong Jia,Lei Yang,Qing Feng Pdf

The multiple signal demixing and parameter estimation problems that result from the impacts of background noise and interference are issues that are frequently encountered in the fields of radar, sonar, communications, and navigation. Research in the signal processing and control fields has always focused on improving the estimation performance of parameter estimation methods at low SNR and maintaining the robustness of estimations in the presence of model errors. This book presents a universal and robust relaxation estimation method (RELAX), and introduces its basic principles and applications in the fields of classical line spectrum estimation, time of delay estimation, DOA estimation, and radar target imaging. This information is explained comprehensively and in great detail, and uses metaphors pertaining to romantic relationships to visualize the basic problems of parameter estimation, the basic principles of the five types of classical parameter estimation methods, and the relationships between these principles. The book serves as a reference for scientists and technologists in the fields of signal processing and control, while also providing relevant information for graduate students in the related fields.

Cognitive Electronic Warfare: An Artificial Intelligence Approach by Karen Haigh,Julia Andrusenko Pdf

This comprehensive book gives an overview of how cognitive systems and artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in electronic warfare (EW). Readers will learn how EW systems respond more quickly and effectively to battlefield conditions where sophisticated radars and spectrum congestion put a high priority on EW systems that can characterize and classify novel waveforms, discern intent, and devise and test countermeasures. Specific techniques are covered for optimizing a cognitive EW system as well as evaluating its ability to learn new information in real time. The book presents AI for electronic support (ES), including characterization, classification, patterns of life, and intent recognition. Optimization techniques, including temporal tradeoffs and distributed optimization challenges are also discussed. The issues concerning real-time in-mission machine learning and suggests some approaches to address this important challenge are presented and described. The book covers electronic battle management, data management, and knowledge sharing. Evaluation approaches, including how to show that a machine learning system can learn how to handle novel environments, are also discussed. Written by experts with first-hand experience in AI-based EW, this is the first book on in-mission real-time learning and optimization.

An Airborne Radar Technique for Moving-target Detection, Location, and Tracking by John K. Schindler Pdf

A novel technique for detecting, locating, and tracking moving targets from an airborne radar platform is described and analyzed. The technique uses the generally dissimilar linear doppler frequency modulated signals from moving targets and stationary ground clutter. A matched filter processor is defined and its resolution and ambiguity properties studied as function processor parameters. Sub-clutter visibility of the processor is then determined. Two techniques for digitally implementing the processor are discussed and the computational efficiencies briefly analyzed. Finally, target angular position can be determined using phase monopulse. It is then shown that target velocity--both ground speed and target heading--can be determined from radar observables. (Author).

Study on Ground Moving Target Indication and Imaging Technique of Airborne SAR by Jian Yang Pdf

Based on a detailed analysis of the signal model of the moving target, this thesis focuses on the theories and applications of ground moving target indicator (GMTI) and ground moving target imaging (GMTIm) algorithms in synthetic aperture radar/ ground moving target indicator (SAR/GMTI mode), wide-area surveillance ground moving target indication (WAS-GMTI) mode and frequency modulated continuous wave synthetic aperture radar (FMCW SAR) systems. The proposed algorithms can not only indicate and image fast-moving targets, but are also effective in the context of slow-moving target processing. The system design scheme combines the mechanical scanning mode and the airborne SAR system, while the azimuth moving target indication algorithm employs the additional range walk migration induced by FMCW SAR systems. In addition, the non-ideal errors that deteriorate the performance of GMTIm algorithms in real SAR data processing are discussed, and suitable compensation methods are provided.>
