Updates in the Understanding and Management of Thyroid Cancer by Thomas J. Fahey Pdf

Thyroid cancer can be either common or rare, and takes several forms in multiple populations, such as children and adolescents. The chapters in this book, which provide state-of-the-art knowledge in understanding and treating the condition, are therefore welcome. Our understanding of thyroid cancer is advanced by several chapters on its incidence in a Spanish population, the functionality of p53 and the use of microarray technology in research. Diagnostic issues include the roles of glycosylation and glycoproteins, and use of a γ-camera to evaluate the in vivo biodistributions and internal medical dosimetries of Iodine-131. The majority of chapters address the range of possible treatment protocols, such as IGF signalling, surgical management, sentinel lymph node biopsy, radioiodine treatment and differentiation therapy.

Minimally Invasive Therapies for Endocrine Neck Diseases by Celestino Pio Lombardi,Rocco Bellantone Pdf

This handy book offers a complete overview of current minimally invasive techniques for the management of endocrine diseases of the neck, reflecting how, in the past few years, the development of various ultrasound-guided procedures and endoscopic/video-assisted surgical techniques has changed the approach to thyroid and parathyroid diseases. The book opens by describing the main diagnostic tools for thyroid, parathyroid and cervical lymph nodes, focusing especially on the new technologies for tissue characterization. The different minimally invasive treatment procedures involving either a percutaneous approach (ethanol injection, laser thermal ablation, radiofrequency thermal ablation, high-intensity focused ultrasound) or minimally invasive surgery are then described in detail. The volume is intended for all clinicians and surgeons with an interest in the field of endocrinology and neck surgery. It provides a synthetic but clear description of the various available techniques from a technical point of view and discusses the main issues concerning each of them, permitting comparative evaluation in order to identify the best option in a particular case. It also reports the evidence available in the current literature.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology by Syed Z. Ali,Edmund S. Cibas Pdf

This atlas is the offspring of the “The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference,” hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.
